  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of a local community based multi-factorial program for high-risk younger and older elderly people. Methods: The quasi-experimental research design (pretest-post test) was employed. Participants were recruited in Seoul and a total of 98 elders completed an 8-week multi-factorial program for preventing frailty. Descriptive statistics, $x^2$-test and GLM were used in the data analysis with SPSS/WIN 15.0. Results: The high-risk elderly people in the younger and older stages showed differences in IADL, TUG and BMI, and after being provided with the multi-factorial program for preventing frailty, some effects were shown on improving the total score of frailty, a physical function, TUG, BMI, depression, subjective feeling of health, and social interaction. Conclusion: The 8-week multi-factorial program for preventing frailty had positive effects on improving physical, emotional and social functions of the high-risk elderly people. It is necessary to evaluate the effects after individual intervention as well as group intervention and to evaluate the effects of the program by setting a control group in the future.

Methods: The research was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Data collection was performed from February 26, 2012, to April 26, 2012. The subjects were 28 residents for the experimental group, who were selected at A nursing home, D city, in Korea and 27 residents for the control group, who were selected at B nursing home. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$-test, independent t-test, ANCOVA and Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ with SPSS/Win 17.0 program. Results: There was a significant improvement in health promoting behaviors (F=64.26, p<.001), Lt. Grip strength (F=39.76, p<.001), Rt. Grip strength (F=38.06, p<.001), Static balance (F=3.98, p=.050), TUG (F=18.60, p<.001), oral status (F=26.75, p<.001), depression (F=18.79, p<.001), and subjective health status (F=10.75, p<.002) in the treatment group compared to the comparison group. • The aim of this study was to examine empirically the causal relationship between significant adverse outcomes of elderly frailty. The 2017 National Survey on Old Adults was used to test this, but only nine variables necessary for the hypothesis test were abstracted from it. The results of the hypothesis test are summarized as follows. The sub-variables of adverse outcomes, such as disabilities in daily living activities, disabilities in instrumental daily living activities, and health care utilization, were analyzed empirically by inputting sub-variables of six frailty factors into hierarchical regression analysis. In the final model, the physical activities, emotional control, and social support were verified as significant variables influencing the disabilities in daily living activities. These included the following: physical activities, sensory functions, cognition, emotional control and social support as those influencing disabilities in the instrumental daily living activities; and nutrition, physical activities, sensory functions, emotional control, and social support as those influencing the health care utilization. Based on the results of the hypothesis test, it is necessary to develop and implement personalized health management programs that specifically identify elderly weakness factors that affect adverse outcomes, such as disabilities or health care utilization.
