Some scyphomedusae were collected from the coasts of Busan (Gijang), Geojedo Island(Jangmok-ri) and Samcheok during the period from June 1989 to May 1999. They were identified into Stenoscyphus inabai of Stauromedusae and Aurelia aurita in Semaeostomeae. They are first recorded in Korea.
Some marine hydromedusae were collected from the coasts of Geojedo Island and Changho harbour in Korea during the period from January 1997 to March 1999. They were identified into Rathkea octopunctata (M. Sars, 1835), Spirocodon saltatrix (Tilesius, 1818) in Anthomedusae and Dipleurosoma typicum Boeck, 1866 in Leptomedusae. They are new to the Korean fauna.

The frequency and abundance of jellyfish, presumably related with climate change, fisheries overexploitation, marine pollution including land reclamation and dyke construction, are increasing worldwide. This feature has attracted interest and concerns from general public and public officials, and government is seeking how the damages could be prevented or reduced down. Korean government, having recent huge blooms of jellyfish, engaged in reducing and/or countermeasuring jellyfish damages. Korean research themes include ecology and physiology of blooming jellyfish species, understanding of the blooming mechanism, and focus on the eradication of blooming jellyfish, without governmental integrative management plan. EU is undertaking scientific projects focused on understanding of the mechanism and control of jellyfish blooms, and establishment of an integrative management. In USA, government has established the code on jellyfish management for conserving and protecting the fish and shellfish resources and one of its department is specially assigned to monitor jellyfish appearance, undertake research, and prepare management plan. Japan also assigned a department and research institute for jellyfish research. Their main interest is to predict jellyfish drifting and mass bloom. Compared to Korea, USA, EU and Japan emphasize integrative management that includes ecological understanding, public education and outreaches, communication and control, if possible, of jellyfish blooms, based on scientific data. We suggest then, 1) establishment of an integrative scientific system consisting of policy and scientific experts to prepare inter-ministrial integrative management plan to effectively combat jellyfish blooms and to maximize the scientific result; 2) concept change from harmful to exploitable marine animal in policy making and research; and 3) active education and information service for people. We expect that these suggestions can be useful for jellyfish management and policy making on another harmful marine organisms.
Some hydromedusae were collected from Shiwhaho (Kyonsgi-do), Korea Strait and Yeosu, Korea during years 2000-2002. They were identified into Sorsia tubulosa (M. Sars, 1835) of the order Anthomedusae, and Liriope tetraphylla (Chamisso and Eysenhardt, 1821) of the order Trachymedusae respectively. They are new to the Korean fauna. The order Trachymedusae is first recorded in Korea. The long tube-like manubrium and four marginal tentacles are characteristics of S. tubuloso. In L. tetraphylla, the four triangle-shaped gonads and their positions upon half of surface of subumbrella, the seven blind centripetal canals in a quadrant and the long fat manubrium are its distinct characteristics. Resulting from this work, the Korean hydromedusae identified so far consist of 13 species of 11 families in five orders.
This paper carried out a study to reduce damage from jellyfish whose population has increased due to global warming. The emergence of jellyfish on the beach could result in casualties from jellyfish stings and economic losses from closures. This paper confirmed from the preceding studies that the pattern of jellyfish's appearance is predictable through machine learning. This paper is an extension of The prediction model of emergence of Busan coastal jellyfish using SVM. In this paper, we used deep neural network to expand from the existing methods of predicting the existence of jellyfish to the classification by index. Due to the limitations of the small amount of data collected, the 84.57% prediction accuracy limit was sought to be resolved through data expansion using bootstraping. The expanded data showed about 7% higher performance than the original data, and about 6% better performance compared to the transfer learning. Finally, we used the test data to confirm the prediction performance of jellyfish appearance. As a result, although it has been confirmed that jellyfish emergence binary classification can be predicted with high accuracy, predictions through indexation have not produced meaningful results.
Recently, the population of toxic and/or unusable jellyfish is increasing during summer along the east coast of Korea, causing massive economical and ecological damage to fisheries, nuclear power plant and marine environment. To solve this problem, this study was carried out using jellyfish as a potential soil additive for horticulture. The jellyfish was solidified and homogenized, then mixed with a commercial bed soil. Allium tuberosum ROTH was planted to control bed soil (BS) and jellyfish powder mixed bed soil groups (Mixed bed soil, MBS), and following parameters were measured during five weeks: water content, electrical conductivity and growth of leaves. At the end of the experiment, bacterial community structures of each pot were analyzed by DGGE. The relative water adsorption of jellyfish powder was about 2.5 times greater compared to its dry weight. The water content of MBS group was significantly higher than BS group 6.5 to 14.2%, and the electric conductivity of MBS group was measured around 2.8 dS/m where BS group was resulted average of 1.8 dS/m. However, the leaves of BS group were grown 30% longer compared to MBS group. DGGE analysis of MBS group was shown in high number of phylum Bacteroidetes and increased diversity of Sphingobacteriia compared to BS group. Jellyfish powder as a soil additive surely will be a good candidate as humectant and microbiota stimulator, although there are several obstacles such as high electrical conductivity and residual alum salt which used for solidification of jellyfish.

Freshwater jellyfish, a type of jellyfish exclusively found in freshwater, has a limited number of species but is found globally. However, their ecology and causes of occurrence are largely unknown. Therefore, understanding the distribution of polyps, which produce the larvae of freshwater jellyfish, can provide important data for comprehending their ecology. This study aims to explore the COI gene of freshwater jellyfish using environmental DNA from the microbial film in the Miho River system. Among the 12 survey points in the Miho River watershed, genetic material of freshwater jellyfish was detected in 8 points, mainly located upstream near reservoirs. These genetic materials were identified as genes of the well-known freshwater jellyfish species, Craspedacusta sowerbii. Notably, the C. sowerbii genes found in the Miho River watershed survey points were closely related to a species previously discovered in Italy. Consequently, utilizing environmental DNA to explore the genetic traces of freshwater jellyfish enables rapid screening of areas with a high likelihood of freshwater jellyfish occurrence. This approach is deemed to provide crucial information for understanding the distribution and ecology of freshwater jellyfish in Korea.

The spatio-temporal distribution of jellyfish in Masan Bay was investigated in this study using a numerical model. First, a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model (POM) was constructed, taking into account residual flows, tides, temperature, salinity, and wind effects. A particle tracking model based on residual flow was then used to investigate the jellyfish present in Masan Port, referred to as the Heavy Industry and Gapo New Port in Masan. Jellyfish distribution was concentrated with maximum (2,533 individual) in the North Sea near Machang Bridge. Itcan be concluded that this concentration was due to multi-directional residual flows and topography effects. Residual flow currents are a dominant factor in understanding the aggregation of jellyfish, and this study used a numerical simulation of tide-induced residual currents, wind-driven currents and density currents in distinct cases to thoroughly address the topic. As a result, wind-driven currents (effect of the wind) was found to be superior to other components as an influence on the distribution of jellyfish near Machang Bridge and Modo in Masan Bay.

Some siphonophores and scyphomedusae were collected from the coasts of Hoopo(Sea of Japan) and Geojedo Island, Changson(Korea Strait) in Korea respectively. They identified into Porpita umbella O. F. Muller, 1776 of the order Siphonophora in the Hydrozoa and Dactylometra quinquecirrha L. Agassiz, 1862 of the Semaeostomeae in the Scyphozoa. P. umbella looks like a bule button. It's chitinous float is light brown and the other body protions are turquoise blue. D. quinquecirrha has four long curtain-like oral lobes which are highly flexible and ornamented with numerous nematocyst warts, and 32 radiating reddish brown stripes upon exumbrella. The Siphonophora is reported for the first time and three scyphomedusae are reported in Korea so far.
