  • Numerous insect pests threaten the Korean orchard industry through feeding on various tissues of fruit trees. Generally, the control of economically important orchard pests is based on the use of chemical insecticides. Owing to growing concerns regarding the environmental and human health effects of insecticides, environment-friendly pest control strategies are urgently needed. Pheromones of orchard pests could lead to an environmentally safe control system based on mating disruption or mass trapping. This review summarizes the functions and compounds of known pheromones from 51 orchard pests in Korea. The pheromones identified to date from 14 species in the families Miridae, Aphididae, Diaspididae, Pseudococcidae, Rutelidae, Cecidomyiidae, and Eurytomidae and 26 species in the order Lepidoptera are female-produced sex pheromones that attract only males. In contrast, all known examples for 11 species in the families Alydidae, Pentatomidae, Thripidae and Cerambycidae are male-produced aggregation pheromones that attract both sexes. Research on pheromones in new pests, kairomones in key orchard pests, mating disruption dispensers to generate prolonged release of the pheromones, and trap design and trap location for mass trapping will be required for the expanded use of pheromones and other semiochemicals in orchard pest management in the future.

  • Pheromones of several insect species were evaluated in a screening program in terms of their usefulness in pest forecasting and control in Korea. Species included striped rite borer (Chilo suppressalis) and tortricid moths, which attack deciduous fruit, and colding moth. The pheromone of striped rice borer was supplied through the courtesy of the Tropical Products Institute, London. Pheromones of other species were obtained from Cornell University and the Zoecon Corporation of Palo Alto, California. 'rho results of this experiment were as follows: 1. Live traps containing virgin striped rice borer female moths were more effective in attracting male moths than were the pheromone traps. 2. Since the effectiveness of the striped rice borer pheromone decreased dramatically with time, it was difficult to estimate the peak tine of the borer emergence. 3. The primary species trapped in deciduous fruit orchards was the oriental fruit moth, Grapholitha molesta. The traps were baited with the phermones, OFM and LAW. 4. Several moth species were trapped with OBLR. RBLR. SPAR and ArcM phermones but few were trapped with the remaining eight tortricid pheromones. 5. The following tortricid pheromones might be useful for forecasting the species given: OFM, LAW : Grapholitha molesta OBLR : Archips breviprecanus OBLH, RBLR, ArcM : Archippus coreensis Archips fuscocupreanus Hoshinoa longicellana SPAR, TBM ; Phyroderces sp.

  • This study was evaluated the effect of attractant or repellent plants for establishing push-pull strategy for insect pest management of organic Chinese cabbage cultivation. The attractant or repellent effect of Ten plants, marigold, rye, Chinese chive, lettuce, chicory, Nongwoo-chicory, crown daisy, Treviso, green leaf mustard, and red leaf mustard were evaluated against diamondback moth, striped flea beetle, aphids, brown-winged stink bug and cabbage stink bug in organic Chinese cabbage field in Seosan in 2012. Of the ten repellent or attractant plants, rye and chicory attracted significantly brown-winged stink bug and cabbage stink bug, respectively. Aphids ate attracted significantly to the rye rather than the other plants. Leaf mustard was attracted cabbage stink bug and brown-winged stink bug in order. Cabbage stink bug was attracted by only a combination of lettuce and Chinese chive. Diamondback moth, striped flea beetle, aphid, brown-winged stink bug and cabbage stink bug were significantly repelled by single or combined cultivation of crown daisies, Treviso, and leaf mustard in organic Chinese cabbage cultivation. The results above-mentioned indicate that selected insect-attractant and -repellent plants can be used as tools for integrated pest managements of Chinese cabbage.

  • The attraction effects of light emitting diode (LED) trap to Spodoptera exigua adults were evaluated in greenhouse and compared with those of no light trap and black-light trap, which is typical used in commercial trap. 7 days later, white LED trap ($83.0{\pm}0.7$) was 2.4 times more attractive than black-light trap ($34.0{\pm}2.6$), whereas the no light trap was little attractive to S. exigua. These results suggest that white LED traps could be used for environmental insect control.

  • The effects of insect capture were studied in a chestnut orchard using three different light traps (A, B, and C type) with various lamps. The mercury lamp trap captured 125 insect species, out of which 115 were chestnut pests. The B and C type light traps, comprising a Dulux-EL white lamp, were examined for their capturing ability. The type B trap attracted Coleopteran insects (83%), while type C captured Lepidopteran insects (73%). The mercury clarity lamp along with the type B light trap was most effective in attracting Curculio sikkimensis adults (mean, 9.8 adults), while the Dulux-EL lamp captured the highest number of Dichocrocis punctiferalis adults (mean, 10.2 adults) using the type C light trap. These results suggest that selection of the appropriate types of light traps and lamps based on the target pest species is critical in ensuring effective and eco-friendly control of the pest population.

  • Striped flea beetle, Phyllotreta striolata (SFB) and turnip sawfly, Athalia rosae ruficornis (TSF) are two economically important sporadic pests in radish fields on Jeju island. The response of adult SFB and TSF to a mixture of aggregation pheromone, (+)-(6R,7S)-himachala-9,11-diene and host plant volatile, allyl isothiocyanate (HAI), as well as to yellow and blue sticky traps was examined in radish fields. Adult SFB was more attracted to the sticky trap with HAI, regardless of the color of the sticky trap; however, adult TSF was more attracted on the yellow sticky trap than blue, and no effect of HAI was observed. The adult SFB and TSF can be effectively monitored using yellow sticky traps placed 10 cm above the plant canopy. SFB and TSF had 3 and 5 peak times in a year, respectively. The first peak occurred in the middle of March for SFB and mid-late of April for TSF. We expect that the results of the present study can facilitate minimizing the damage caused by the two important pests in commercial radish fields.

  • Flying behavior during nighttime and control methods of fruit sucking pests were investigated in yuzu (Citrus junos) groves at Koheung area from August to November in 1999. Among the 3 kind of bulbs with different color (white, blue and yellow), white bulb attracted the most number of fruit sucking pests . The 93 percent of the moths was attracted from sunset to 24 o\`clock. Main flying time of hemipteriods in early, mid, and late October were from 22 to 04 o\`clock, sunset to 02 o\`clock and sunset to 24 o\`clock, respectively. Their flying time become earlier as the night temperature declines. For control of fruit sucking pests, attraction liquid traps, light traps (100 W) and illumination light bulb were set up in the yuzu groves (1,000 $\m^2$) from the 1 st October to the 3rd November. Attraction liquid was composed of a raw rice wine 2,000 ml+black sugar 100 g+vinegar 100 ml. When established at 3 sites per 1,000 $\m^2$ orchard, attraction liquid trap reduced the number of sucking spots on yuzu fruit to 64% and its attracting effect maintained for 3 weeks after setting-up. Three light traps per 1,000 m2 which turned on from sunset to 02 o\`clock reduced the number of sucking spots by 60% .

  • Bactrocera depressa and B. scutellata are serious insect pests to pumpkin in Korea. Adult stage which exposes to aerial condition is the optimal target for control because the immature stages of both species hide within host fruit, flowers or under ground. This study aimed to develop an attract-to-kill technique of their females. A commercially available attract-to-kill agent was not effective to attract these two pumpkin fruit flies. This study developed an attractant containing protein-based terpinyl acetate (TA). This TA-protein lure was effective to attract two pumpkin fruit flies. It attracted both sexes with female-biased frequency (60-70%). This TA-protein lure would be used for control both pumpkin fruit flies and may be used for monitoring field populations of B. depressa, in which specific attractant is not known.
