  • This study was aimed to detect Submarine Groundwater Discharge (SGD) distribution image of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) using infrared band of Landsat-7 ETM+ around Jeju island. It is used to analyze SST distribution that DN value of satellite images converted into temperature. The estimation of SGD location is that extracting range of $15{\sim}17^{\circ}C$ from SST. The summer season images(July 28. 2006, Aug. 29. 2006 and Sep. 19. 2008) were used to analyze big difference between SST and temperature of SGD. The results, estimated SGD locations were occurred part of coastal area in northeastern of Jeju island.

  • To explore submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) into the coastal zone of Jeju Island, the water quality analysis with seasonal remotely sensed data was carried out. If the groundwater is directly discharged into the ocean, the water quality of coastal zone is influenced. Therefore sea surface temperature (SST), the transparency, and Chlorophyll-a's concentration were analyzed for extracting the anomaly zone related with SGD using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data acquired on April, August, and December. Then the spatial characteristics of springs, which located along the coastal area, were analyzed by CIS data integration based on Fuzzy logic. The integration results were compared with the anomaly zone extracted from Landsat TM data, and it is considered that springs has close relationship with SGD.

  • This study selected the promising area of submarine groundwater discharge(SGD) that flows into the sea following unconfined physical aquifer through the electrical resistivity survey of the land and sea. The submarine groundwater discharge(SGD) mostly flows into the sea following fracture zones, and the detection of the fault zone becomes the important guideline of groundwater discharge. Electrical sounding of the land assessed the groundwater flow and integration possibility according to the location of a fault that is a water path between underground reservoir and surface water as well as a rock fracture. In addition, the study conducted sea electrical resistivity to expand the area with high potential and selected the expected water potential groundwater area. The areas of the study were Busan and coastal areas, and for the terrain analysis, the candidates of the ground exploration were selected after analyzing lineaments that is expanded to coast direction.

  • Methane (CH4) is a key greenhouse gas in the atmosphere with 85 times greater greenhouse potent relative to carbon dioxide (CO2). The atmospheric concentration of CH4 is rapidly increasing due to the intensive usage of CH4 and the thawing of the cryosphere. Additionally, with the current warming of ocean water, the dissociation of gas hydrates, an ice-like compound and the largest reservoir of CH4 on Earth, is expected to occur, resulting in the release of CH4 from the seafloor into the overlying water and atmosphere. Moreover, bottom water hypoxia is another concern that potentially introduces greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. With ongoing global warming and eutrophication, the size and duration of bottom water hypoxia are rapidly increasing. These low-oxygen conditions would relocate the redox zone shallower in sediment or in the water column, causing the release of CH4 into the atmosphere and thereby intensifying global warming. However, there exists a gap in the understanding of CH4 dynamics including its generation in relation to bottom water hypoxia. Therefore, this review article aims to understand the relationship between CH4 and bottom water hypoxia and to draw attention to CH4 investigation in Korea.

  • The evaluation of potential submarine groundwater is an important research topic for exploring an alternative water resource. Two different approaches, water budget analysis and Rn mass balance method, were employed to investigate the annual variation of submarine groundwater discharge in 2010 at a marine watershed located at the south-eastern part of Korean Peninsula. In order to obtain reliable hydrological data during study period, temporal and spatial variations of rainfall and soil moisture had been collected and hydro-meterological data such as temperature, humidity and wind speed were collected The runoff response was simulated using SCS-CN method with spatial distributions of landuse and soil texture from GIS analysis. Six different methods were used to estimate the monthly variation of evapotranspiration and field measurements of soil moisture were used to account for the infiltration. Comparisons of infiltration and surface runoff between simulation and water balance with measurements showed coincidence. The water budget analysis and Rn mass balance method provide mean daily submarine groundwater as 5.35 and 4.07 $m^3/m/day$ in 2010, respectively.

  • The horizontal two-dimensional model which can predict the long-term water quality(WQ) change is setup for the environmental management. For the model calibration and verification, we measured the pollutants load at 22 streams and the WQ at 16 stations monthly and/or seasonally in Chinhae . Masan Bay. The pollutants release rate from the sediment was also measured to consider the regionally different sediment pollution level. From the model application results, it is shown that the WQ concentrations in most of the regions adjacent to land and river inflow are considerably high, but rapidly decrease along the seaward direction. In Masan Bay, the particulate inflow-pollutants were substantially deposited and gradually contaminated the bottom sediment on account of the excessive pollutants load and flow stagnancy. Eutrophication in the effluent discharge region was also being slowly progressed by the inefficiently treated wastewater containing amount of Nand P constituents.

  • In order to estimate the uranium flux from seawater to sediments, we took pore water samples and deployed benthic chambers on seafloor of Chonsu Bay, Korea. The uranium flux across the sediment-water interface was estimated from the pore water to be 0.112-0.566 mg/$m^2yr$, corresponding to a removal flux of $4.3-21.5{\times}10^7$ gU/yr for the entire Yellow Sea. Nutrient fluxes from sediment to bottom water were estimated to be 135.6 mmol/$m^2yr$ for ammonia, 228.2 mmol/$m^2yr$ for nitrate, 36.8 mmol/$m^2yr$ for phosphate and 23.9 mmol/$m^2yr$ for silicate. The redox boundary, based on the distribution of pore water nitrate and solid phase manganese, was located at 3-5 cm below the sediment surface. Phosphate flux obtained by benthic chambers was 28.S mmol/$m^2yr$. On the other hand, estimates of uranium and silicate fluxes were orders of magnitude greater than those based on pore water profiles. Flux estimates on the basis of pore water concentration is believed to have greater reliability than those obtained from benthic chamber data.
