In June 2016, the term "Fourth Industrial Revolution" was first used at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and it gained worldwide attention. Consequently, the importance of smart ports has increased as the shipping industry has been incorporating various Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies. Currently, major countries around the world are working to achieve digital transformation in the maritime and port industry by establishing comprehensive smart ports. However, the smartification of domestic ports in South Korea is currently limited to a few areas such as Busan, Incheon, and Gwangyang, focusing on port automation. In this context, this study performed keyword analysis to identify key components of smart ports and conducted Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) analysis among relevant stakeholders to determine the priorities for the Introduction of smart ports in South Korea. The analysis revealed that universities prioritized automation, intelligenceization, informatization and environmentalization in that order. Research institutes prioritized informatization, intelligenceization, automation and environmentalization. Government agencies prioritized informatization, automation, intelligenceization and environmentalization, while private sector enterprises prioritized automation, intelligenceization, informatization, and environmentalization.

Seafarers play an important role in shipping and logistics. However, seafarers are relatively vulnerable to mental illness because they have to board ships for a considerable period of time and work in isolation. In particular, in the pandemic situation caused by COVID-19, the crew change is delayed due to the closure of many ports around the world, increasing the mental burden on seafarers. The mental health management of the crew is important because these mental problems can lead to major accidents of lives and ships. This paper identified the necessity of mental health management of seafarers through a survey and identified problems with the currently operated mental health management program and curriculum. Especially, this study proposed VR-based programs to help crews receive mentally counseling treatment in a timely manner and to reduce the mental burden on them by preventing sensitive personal information exposure. Through this, it is expected to contribute to the stable development of the logistics industry by establishing a safe seafarers working environment.
This paper explores the relationship between shipping firm's investment and debt-ratio characteristics. Using a panel of 41 shipping firms from 2006 to 2011, this study finds evidence that debt/asset ratio and leverage are negatively associated with firm's investment activities. This relationship shows that volume of debt and capital structure are critical decision factor on firm's investment and capital financing. In terms of financial expenses to sales, positive relationship is existed with firm's investment finding that financing cost is important to investment. The previous study of the firm's investment in other sector also shows a negative relationship with debit ratio. This study is also interested in the extent to which the firm's investment is affected by firm size because there is general agreement that smaller firms have less access to external capital markets. As results, smaller companies group have more positive relationship with factors related to financing cost such as financial expenses to sales and tax. On the other hand, bigger companies group shows the evidence that firm investment is positive relationship with asset size. The analysis corresponding to economic fluctuation shows that debit ratio is more sensitive to firm's investment during a recession. On the other hand, financial expenses to sales is more related to firm's investment during an economic boom.
In the maritime shipping industry, imbalance between supply and demand has persistently increased, leading to the utilization of blank sailings by major shipping companies worldwide as a key means of flexibly adjusting vessel capacity in response to shipping market conditions. Traditionally, blank sailings have been frequently implemented around the Chinese New Year period. However, due to unique circumstances such as the global pandemic starting in 2020 and trade tensions between the United States and China, shipping companies have recently conducted larger-scale blank sailings compared to the past. As blank sailings directly impact freight transport delays, they can have negative repercussions from perspectives of both businesses and consumers. Therefore, this study employed Poisson regression models and negative binomial regression models to analyze the influence of maritime freight rate determinants on shipping companies' decisions regarding blank sailings, aiming to proactively address potential consequences. Results of the analysis indicated that, in Poisson regression analysis for 2M, significant variables included global container shipping volume, container vessel capacity, container ship scrapping volume, container ship newbuilding index, and OECD inflation. In negative binomial regression analysis, ocean alliance showed significance with global container shipping volume and container ship order volume, the alliance with container ship capacity and interest rates, non-alliance with international oil prices, global supply chain pressure index, container ship capacity, OECD inflation, and total alliance with container ship capacity and interest rates.

In the era of the 4th industrial revolution, automated technology innovation is emerging, and container terminals are being developed to introduce automation equipment and systems. With the advent of ultra-large vessels, terminals around the world are seeking to build port infrastructure by combining automated technology in order to attract more cargo and to enhance competitiveness to provide prompt service. To introduce automated technology that is emerging as a high-tech industry, this study proposes a structural equation model for the decision to introduce automated container terminal and conducts a questionnaire survey on workers engaged in terminal operators for empirical analysis. This paper presents the role and direction of guidelines for introduction of automated container terminal through decision model.
As the revitalization of the global maritime industry continues, the number of foreign ships navigating the maritime territories of maritime neighboring countries has rapidly increased. However, large-scale marine accidents have occurred, caused by the insufficient establishment of a system for management and operation relative to vessels' safety-condition. To address that, the IMO has granted the right to exercise port state control, especially for foreign vessels, to countries with jurisdiction over maritime territories with strengthening regulations and guidelines. In particular, the Republic of Korea, as a member of the TOKYO MOU, is conducting PSC, but as of 2020, the proportion of foreign ships was three times higher than that of national ships that called in domestic ports. However, the inspection rate was low at 9% which has not met the recommended level by the TOKYO MOU. Thus, this study conducted an IPA analysis as well as content analysis, by collecting the practical opinions and views of PSCO through objective questionnaires and written expert interviews, for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of domestic PSC. As a result, it was derived that the importance and performance related to human factors such as life on board, working environment, and response to safety accidents should be improved in to raise the quality of PSC inspection. Additionally, the work environment and performance of PSC in domestic ports for foreign vessels could be improved, if multifaceted support bases are established, for administrative unification of related tests for PSC, recruitment of PSCO, activation of the defection-reporting system, reorganization of the PSC execution group, etc.
IMO(International Maritime Organization) is existed the movement for revising ISM Code so that the maintenance history and the trouble information given trading in a ship can be transferred. An empirical analysis was made on the influence that will have upon shipping industry through surveying on the recognition on ISM Code revision in employees of the relevant field and on the expected problems given being amended ISM Code as the above. In conclusion, the positive effect is judged to be more in the aspect of ship safety, which is the aim of ISM Code, rather than the negative effect, which may take place given being revised ISM Code. In other words, the clean market can be formed through this because fairness is maintained on both sides given trading in a ship by which opening the maintenance record and the trouble history is applied equally to a buyer and a seller. Ships can be reduced a loss of time and cost in preventing similar problems and seeking solution that may appear in important equipments, through this maintenance record. Also, based on these materials, it comes to be available for analyzing a risk of ship and preventing and managing a risk, thereby being increased ability of maintenance and repair in a ship, resulting in being judged to likely contributing to ship safety and environmental-pollution prevention.
In a corporate financing, the decision of optimal capital structure is becoming more critical issues and still remaining a problem to be solved though many of researcher have studied. Particularly, shipping companies need a huge amount of capital finance for new vessel's capacity and then they are considering what is the best capital structure. In this point of view, this study tries to investigate the determinants of debit maturity structure focused on the Korean shipping industry. As results of panel regression analysis, firm size, liquidity, chance of growth, good cash flow are major determinants of debit expiration structure in the Korean shipping companies.
In this paper, to analyze the perception and response strategy of Korean ship owners on Global Sulphur Cap 2020, examined the IMO environmental regulation status focusing on MARPOL Annex VI regulation about air pollution prevention, technological measures to reduce SOx emission, shipping industry and management status of Korean ship owners. First of all, the questionnaire was conducted for Korean ship owners after selecting the evaluation factors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference of the perception and response strategy of Korean ship owners by corporation size and main vessel type using frequency and cross analysis. It is confirmed that various researches on SOx emission reduction have been carried out from various points of view at home and abroad. In this study, existing studies related to technical factors for regulatory response and economics analysis were examined and evaluation factors were selected. As a result of analysis, it is found that large-sized shipping companies are more prepared for regulatory response than small and medium-sized bulk carrier owners. There were similar perception and the direction of response strategy about the impacts by corporation size and main vessel type. In about two years to be implemented in 2020, It is necessary to find an appropriate response strategy based on the support policy of the government and related organizations and the systematic analysis of the ship owners. Through this study, although the difference between the perception and response strategy of the ship owners by corporation size and main vessel type was understood, it was found that there were limitations on specific response strategy and corporate data collection. In future research, we should overcome the limitations of this study and conduct an in-depth study.

At the 104th IMO MSC, it was decided to make a code for the operation of MASS(Maritime Autonomous Surface Ship). In addition, the government announced a roadmap for preemptive regulatory innovation for autonomous ships and identified 31 related regulatory issues and suggested improvements to revitalize the autonomous ship industry. This study aims to analyze the ship turning left on the route as a study on how to operate the route system when operating MASS. We intend to derive the current congestion degree of the special area of Busan New Port through maritime traffic survey and use simulation to derive the congestion degree of the special area due to the size of ships and increase in traffic volume. We would like to propose an appropriate amount of traffic (the number of L-converted). It is believed that the research results can be used as basic data for route operation when operating not only current ships but also MASS.
