The magnetotelluric (MT) survey can be affected by external environmental factors. In particular, when acquiring MT data in islands, it is essential to consider the combined effect of topography and sea to understand the results and make accurate interpretations. To analyze the MT response (apparent resistivity, phase) with consideration of the effect of topography and sea, a small cone-shaped island model surrounded by deep sea was created. Two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) forward modeling were performed on the terrain model considering topography and the island model considering both topography and sea. The 2-D MT response did not reflect the topographic and sea effect of the direction orthogonal to the 2-D profile. The 3-D MT response included topographic and sea effects in all directions. The XY and YX components of the apparent resistivity were separated on undulating topography, such as a hill. A conductor at 1 km below sea level could be distinguished from topographic and sea effects in the MT response, and low resistivity anomaly was attenuated at greater depths. This study will facilitate understanding of field data measured on small islands.
Titanomagnetites, the primary magnetic mineral in submarine basalts, generally has undergone some degree of low temperature oxidation to cation-deficient titanomaghemites. Synthetic analogues of natural titanomaghemite have been prepared by the removal of iron mechanism employing a low-temperature aqueous oxidation method. Along with the low-temperature oxidation of titanomagnetite, magnetic properties of titanomagnetite change sensitively. The results show that as the degree of oxidation increases, the Curie temperature (Tc) increases from $166^{\circ}C$ to $400^{\circ}C$, saturation magnetization (Ms) at room temperature decreases from 126.30 kAlm (25.26 emu/g) to 16.55 kAlrn (3.31 emu/g) monotonously, and coercive force (Hc) and coercivity of remanence (Hcr) increase from 6.13 kAlm (77 Oe) and 23.24 kAlm (292 Oe) to 38.83 kNm (488 Oe) and 47.03 kAlm (591 Oe), respectively. Low field susceptibility (X) decreases from $2023{\times}10^{-6}SI$ to $84{\times}10^{-6}S1$. Based on the results of this study, it is interpreted that the NRM intensity variations of the oceanic crust of presetnt day to 30 Ma is due to the formation of titanomahemites of various degree of oxidation by the low-temperature aqueous oxidation of titanomagnetite, while the magnetic intensity changes of the oceanic crust older than 30 Ma is presumably caused by the combined effect of the formation of titanomaghemites and subsequent inversion of titanomagnemites. DetaileJ causes of the variations of NRM intensity of the oceanic crust may be revealed by systematic studies of the oceanic-floor basalts in the future.

To mitigate the climate change and global warming, various technologies have been internationally proposed for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Especially, in recent, carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) technology is regarded as one of the most promising emission reduction options that $CO_2$ be captured from major point sources (eg., power plant) and transported for storage into the marine geological structure such as deep sea saline aquifer. The purpose of this paper is to review the latest progress on the development of technologies for $CO_2$ storage in marine geological structure and its perspective in republic of Korea. To develop the technologies for $CO_2$ storage in marine geological structure, we carried out relevant R&D project, which cover the initial survey of potentially suitable marine geological structure fur $CO_2$ storage site and monitoring of the stored $CO_2$ behavior, basic design for $CO_2$ transport and storage process including onshore/offshore plant and assessment of potential environmental risk related to $CO_2$ storage in geological structure in republic of Korea. By using the results of the present researches, we can contribute to understanding not only how commercial scale (about 1 $MtCO_2$) deployment of $CO_2$ storage in the marine geological structure of East Sea, Korea, is realized but also how more reliable and safe CCS is achieved. The present study also suggests that it is possible to reduce environmental cost (about 2 trillion Won per year) with developed technology for $CO_2$ storage in marine geological structure until 2050.

The Marine concrete that located at immersion zone receives an hydrostatic pressure of 1 atm as depth of the water increased by 10 m. And it could accelerate chloride ion penetration. In this study, to evaluate the influence of hydrostatic pressure on chloride ion penetration, concrete mixed by ordinary Portland cement and Portland blast-furnace slag cement was exposed to 1 and 6 atm and substitute ocean water. As a result, the surface chloride ion concentration of the concrete under 6 atm of hydrostatic pressure increased rapidly and the water-soluble chloride ion contents was increased by depth. In addition, the concrete under 6 atm of hydrostatic pressure showed the increase of capillary pores corresponding to 5~100 nm.
In this study, the precipitation reaction of vanadium and ammonium chloride in aqueous solution was investigated in order to recover vanadium. Ammonium metavanadate having a crystal structure of [$NH_4VO_3$] was precipitated from aqueous solution containing vanadium at pH 9.2 ~ 9.4, and ammonium polyvanadate having a crystal structure of [$(NH_4)_2V_6O_{16}$] was precipitated when the pH of the aqueous solution containing vanadium was adjusted with sulfuric acid. Ammonium polyvanadate [$(NH_4)_2V_6O_{16}$] precipitated at a temperature of $80{\sim}90^{\circ}C$ and pH 2, and at a temperature of $40^{\circ}C$ and pH 6 ~ 8 of aqueous solution. In the acidic region of aqueous solution pH 2, the vanadium content of the aqueous solution should be at least 3,000 mg/L and the precipitation temperature should be maintained at $80^{\circ}C$ or higher in order to obtain a precipitation ratio of 99% or more. When the ammonium vanadate was precipitated in the alkaline region, the vanadium content was more than 10,000 mg/L and the precipitation temperature was maintained at $40^{\circ}C$ to increase the precipitation ratio. Aluminum was not precipitated regardless of the vanadium content and pH of the aqueous solution. However, the iron component reacts with ammonium chloride to precipitate into ammonium jarosite. Therefore, Fe component must be preferentially removed in order to increase the recovery of vanadium.

Although the knowledge of current seismicity is a critical information for making and implementing effective earthquake-related policy, the detailed seismicity information of the metropolitan areas with high-population density has been largely underestimated due to the high-level of cultural noise and small earthquake magnitude. This study presents 12 earthquakes including 2 earthquakes previously known and 10 additional earthquakes occurred from 2010 to 2017 in Busan, but they were unreported by the Korea Meteorological Administration. Matched filter technique is used to detect micro-earthquakes. Although the epicenters of micro-earthquakes though present a distinguished linearity, a correlation with faults in the area is unknown. A repeated micro-seismicity suggests that there are subsurface structures responsible for observed events. If large earthquakes occur along the fault in Busan, they may cause catastrophic natural disasters. Given the fact that the recent earthquakes did not accompany any surface signatures, it is highly recommended that the current micro-seismicity be investigated, and updated seismicity information be incorporated into establishing active fault maps in Korea.
2:1 clay minerals such as smectite incorporating ammonium were extracted to investigate the ammonium behavior and nitrogen isotope characteristics for two different sediment cores which were collected from shimmering sites on seafloor of the Wakamiko crater, southwestern Japan. Inorganic nitrogen contents in clay fraction were estimated by calibration curve based on consistently decreasing carbon and nitrogen ratio during the treatment to decompose organic materials, after removing inorganic carbon. The results show that the proportions of inorganic nitrogen for total nitrogen in clay fraction of SWS site(Core#1094MR: av. 18.2%) are higher than those in SES site(Core#1093MG: av. 11.5%). Relatively good crystallinity of the former suggests that exchangeable ammonium was transformed to non-exchangeable ammonium during more evolving diagenetic process. Nitrogen isotope variance of clay fraction(SES site: Core#1093MG: -4.4 ~ +0.2 ‰, av. -2.4 ‰; SWS site: Core#1094MR: -0.7 ~ +3.0 ‰, av. +1.5 ‰) during sequential decomposition of exchangeable ammonium suggests that heat flow derived from deep magma led to nitrogen isotope fractionation between dissolved ammonium and ammonia in the fluids involved in the formation of 2:1 clay mineral incorporating ammonium with local temperature variation.
As awareness of environmental issues continues to grow, there is an escalating demand for recycling and repurposing byproducts of agricultural and food production processes and their conversion to high-value products. Coffee is the most widely consumed beverage globally; during coffee beverage processing and consumption, byproducts such as coffee silverskin (CS), spent coffee grounds (SCGs), and oil are generated. Despite containing beneficial materials such as cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, lipids, and bioactive substances, these byproducts are typically discarded in landfills or incinerated. The utilization of CS, SCGs, and oil in the development of packaging materials holds significant potentials toward the realization of a sustainable society. To this end, considerable research efforts have been dedicated to the development of high-value materials derived from coffee byproducts, including functional fillers, polymer composites, and biodegradable polymers. Notably, CS and SCGs have been employed as functional fillers in polymer composites. Additionally, lipids extracted from SCGs have been used as plasticizers for polymers and cultured with microorganisms to produce biodegradable polymers. This review focuses on the research and development of polymer/CS and polymer/SCG composites as well as cellulose extraction and utilization from CS and SCGs and its applications, oil extraction from SCGs, and cultivation with microorganisms using extracted oil for polyhydroxyalkanoates(PHA) production.
