  • For a long time, the ocean was regarded as unknown area ruled by god, consequently, not so much things were developed in scientific methods and activities. Despite a rapid development of geographic information systems(GIS) marine and ocean fields still remained in the scope of traditional tools and intuitive experiences by the late of 1990. However, land based concepts and technology models require additional customization to apply GIS effectively in marine domains, which are resulted from her dynamic, complex and seamless massive nature. This paper gives a brief review of marine spatial data characteristics and also presents strategic approaches to meet the unique marine GIS requirements.

  • In the GIS construction to land and sea in Korea, GIS construction on land was completed mostly for big cities by NGIS(National Geography Information System) business. However, Marine GIS being constructed by the National Oceanographic Research Institute is still constructing geography information and definition of attribute information and real condition. We have done researches to get maximized ripple effect linking GPS and Navigation techniques on GIS. GPS in accuracy is divided into navigation and precise surveying equipments. Now, GPS technology has been developed very much and with low price GPS equipments are being introduced. But costs on the GPS equipments are high yet. Therefore, the GPS equipments for navigation can be substituted by cheap GPS equipments in a car or ship. In this paper, the authors developed algorithm to convert ellipsoid coordinate between WGS84 and Bessel ellipsoid and to analyze map projection between BESSEL ellipsoid and UTM plane coordinate system. And the author developed ship navigation system with cheap GPS equipments using algorithm of ellipsoid conversion and map projection. The authors proposed the necessity on constructing Internet GIS to manage many ships.

  • Dokdo research has been worked in various fields. However, the continuous accumulation and systematic management of Dokdo research data on marine science haven't been made. In particular, a systematic database system hasn't been established for the research data on marine environment and ecosystem in Dokdo and its surrounding sea. Therefore, GIS database construction on a spatial basis is required for the systematic management and efficient use of Dokdo marine research data, and a marine data model on a GIS basis is needed on the design stage to build the database. In this study, we collected previous observed marine data, and classified them as three groups, such as a framework data group on a GIS basis, a research data group and a thematic data group, according to the data types and characteristics. Moreover, the attributes of each research data were designed to be connected to GIS framework data. The result of the study to build an integrated GIS data model may be useful for developing a management system for marine research data observed in other sea as well as Dokdo.

  • Standards are essential to facilitate the efficient use of GIS data. International Standards such as ISO TC211's 19100 series and various technical specifications from OpenGIS Consortium are some of the examples of efforts to maintain the interoperability among GIS applications. Marine GIS is no exception to this rule and in this context. developing standards for marine GIS is also in urgent needs. Using the same meaning and definition for the features commonly found in marine GIS applications is one of the ways to increase the interoperability among systems. One of the key requirements for maintaining the standard meanings for features is to build a common feature catalogue. This paper examines the concept of feature catalogue and describe the ways in which the feature catalogue can be organized. To identify the common features found in various marine GIS applications, a comprehensive search has been made to collect and analyze the features used in various applications. To maintain the interoperability with the National GIS (NGIS) system, the features used in various NGIS applications have been analyzed as well. The result of these analyses are used to create a comprehensive list of common features for marine GIS. This paper then explains the common feature catalogue for marine GIS and the provides the appropriate classification and coding systems for the common features. In addition, a registration tool for registering the common features into the standard registry has been developed in this study. This Web-based tool can be used to input features into the feature catalogue by various applications and also to maintain a standard-compliant feature catalogue by standard agencies.

  • According to a long-term master plan for the implementing of MOMAF's marine environmental informatization, we have developed marine environment portal web site which consists of 7 main-menu and 39 sub-menu including various types of contents (text, image and multimedia) based on RDBMS. This portal site was opened in Oct., 2002 (http://www.meps.info). Also, for the national institutions' distributed DB which is archived and managed respectively the marine chemical data and biological data, the integrated retrieval system was developed. This system is meaningful for the making collaborative use of real data and could be applied for data mining, marine research, marine environmental GIS and making-decisions.
