Geochemical characteristics of sediment, pore water, and headspace gas in the Ulleung Basin (울릉분지 퇴적물, 공극수 및 공기층 가스의 지화학적 특징)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 동해 울릉분지의 제4기 후기 퇴적물 내의 유기물, 공극수와 메탄의 특징 및 상호작용을 규명하는데 있다. 연구지역에서 채취한 코어퇴적물을 원소 분석한 결과 C/N 및 C/S 비(wt. %)는 퇴적물 내 유기물이 주로 해양조류 기원을 가지고, 일반적인 해양 또는 정체 환경에서 퇴적되어Tdam을 지시한다. 그러나 Rock-Eval 열분석 결과는 유기물 기원이 육상식물(Type III)이고, 열적 성숙단계가 미성숙단계임을 보여준다. 이러한 원소분석과 열분석간의 상반된 결과는 유기물이 침강하는 동안 또는 퇴적 후 이루어진 강한 산화작용에 기인한 것으로 추정된다. 퇴적물 내 공극수의 황산염 농도가 퇴적물의 심도가 증가할수록 감소하며, 감소하는 경향은 크게 두 가지 (적선성, concave down)로 나누어진다. 이는 모든 코어에서 황산엽 환원작용이 일어나고 있음을 지시한다. 또한 직선선의 황산엽농도 구배는 무산소 메탄 산화작용(AMO)의 전형적인 특징이다. 황산염 농도의 수직적 구배를 이용하여 SMI(sulfate-methane interface) 심도를 계산하면, 남부울릉분지의 코어 (03GHP-01, 03GHP-02; <3.5mbsf)가 북부울릉분지 코어(01GHP-05, 01GHP-07, 03GHP-03, 03GHP-04, 03GHP-05; > 6mbsf)보다 낮은 값을 갖는다. 위와 같은 SMI 심도차는 메탄의 상부 분산량과 밀접한 관련있는 것으로 추정된다. 메탄가스의 탄소 안정동위원소 $({\delta}^{13}C)$ 분석값들은 -83.5%o에서 -69.5%o의 범위를 가지고 있고, 이산화탄소 환원작용($CO)_2$ reduction)에 의한 생물 (biogenic) 기원임을 지시한다.

  • The International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted the International Convention on the Control of Ships' Air Pollutants and Discharge as it became interested in environmental issues such as global warming and air pollution. In addition, a special bill on the improvement of air quality, including in port areas, has recently been enacted in Korea to reduce the amount of fine dust generated. As part of such fine dust reduction measures, feasibility studies have been underway on converting diesel engines into battery electric propulsion systems that do not cause fine dust and emissions. Since the battery electric propulsion system can easily utilize renewable energy sources, and does not generate exhaust gas due to combustion of fuel, small coastal ferries with battery electric propulsion systems that use renewable energy have been operating in Europe and the U.S. for several years. However, they have not been introduced in Korea. Therefore, in this study, we selected small coastal ferries in Korea as target ferries, and performed simulations to study the applicability of electric propulsion with batteries linked to solar power systems. Based on the results, we want to confirm the applicability of battery electric propulsion.

Derivation of Candidate Sites for a Tidal Current-Pumped Storage Hybrid Power Plant Using GIS-based Site Selection Analysis (GIS기반 적지분석을 통한 조류-양수 융합발전시스템 설치후보지 도출 연구)

  • This study aimed to determine candidate areas for tidal current-pumped storage hybrid power plants using GIS-based site selection analysis. The study area is the southwestern sea surrounding Jindo Island in South Korea. Factors to be considered for the site selection analysis were derived considering the design and installation characteristics of the hybrid power plant. Numerical simulation to predict tidal speed was performed using the MOHID(Modelo HIDrodin?mico) and the results were converted into spatial data. Subsequently, a GIS-based overlay analysis method proposed in this study was applied to derive the installation candidate area. A total of 10 regions were identified as candidate sites. Among them, it was determined that the power generator could be installed in relatively wide sea areas in Jindo, Seongnamdo, and Hajodo.

  • Salinity gradient energy can be generated from a mixture of water streams with different salt concentrations by using reverse electrodialysis (RED). In this study, we evaluated the effect of stack size and number of cell pairs on the energy efficiency and specific energy of the RED process. Additionally, we studied the prementioned parameters to maximize the power density of RED. The performance of the RED stack which used a patterned ion exchange membrane, was evaluated as a function of stack size and feed flow rate. Moreover, it was noted that an increase in stack size increased the ion movement through the ion exchange membrane. Furthermore, an increase in feed flow rate led to a reduction in the concentration variation, resulting in an increase in OCV and power density. The energy efficiency and specific energy for 100 cells in the 10 × 10 cm2 stack were the highest at 12% and 0.05 kWh/m3, respectively, while the power density from 0.33 cm/s to 5 × 5 cm2 stack was the highest at 0.53 W/m2. The study showed that the RED performance can be improved by altering the size of the stack and the number of cell pairs, thereby positively affecting energy efficiency and specific energy.

  • The present study deals with the investigation about the improvement of the design of tidal stream turbine blade (HAT) in comparison with wind turbine blade because the parameters of tidal stream turbine blade has been mostly derived from wind turbines. As such, there is plenty of room for improvement of the HAT impeller blade design. Comparisons have been done between the newly designed and existing impeller computationally. Similar comparisons will also be made for the experimental results in the near future.

  • In this study, design of hull and test of model boat were carried out with electric propulsion small boat driven by photo-voltaic energy. The shape of boat was made with catamaran type by considering the ship's stability, the light-receiving area from solar. According to calculation, when speed of model boat is 5 knots, it was estimated the available power for propulsion with 1.1[hp]. However, the natural energy such as solar energy is strictly dependent upon the climate conditions so the real boat speed is slightly lower than the estimated value.

  • This study reviewed the type of the project and developmental plan related to ocean energy development in the coastal land boundaries and the ocean, and suggested the efficient scoping method through the diagnosis of the key items of environmental impact assessment (EIA) in the coastal area. The major projects are the construction of tidal power plant, tidal current power plant, and offshore wind power plant in the public water, and also those are the construction of solar power plants in the coastal land boundaries. While the project plans on a large scale such as the construction of tidal power plant, it is important to consider both property of usefulness of the designated areas and harmony analysis with marine space availability based on the adequacy of the site selection and relevance of plan with the master plan for reclamation and strategic environmental assessment (SEA). And also it needs to be considered the careful checkup on the EIA checklist referring to the type of project, effective post-monitoring, and suggestion of mitigating methods to minimize the environmental impacts during the stage of actual environmental impact assessment. Introduction of a system of integrated marine environmental impact assessment should be considered for reasonable and effective manage to developmental projects on the marine spatial area.

Study on Vertical Axis Water Turbine with Movable Dual Blades (가변형 이중 날개를 갖는 수직축 수류터빈에 대한 연구)

  • In this paper, we propose a vertical axis water turbine with dual blades. A parametric study was conducted using numerical analyses. First, a two-dimensional finite-volume analysis with a commercial code was used to find the pitch angle of the main blade under different tip speed ratio conditions. Second, we developed a potential-based panel method to find the best configuration of the inner blades. Experimental tests were conducted at the circulating water channel of Chungnam National University. Various configurations of the dual blades were considered, and their performances were comparatively investigated. The results showed that the turbine with movable dual blades produces a constant torque and tip speed ratio at various flow rates.

  • 최근 정부의 녹색성장 정책, 고유가시대 도래, 온실가스 감축 의무화, 폐기물 해양배출 강화 등으로 인해 폐기물의 자원화에 대한 관심이 고조되고 있다. 국내에서 발생되는 가연성폐기물을 기존의 감량처리 대신 가스화 공정을 적용하여 합성가스로 전환할 경우 환경친화적이고 고효율의 에너지 회수가 가능하게 된다. 폐기물 가스화를 통해 얻어진 합성가스는 난방, 가스엔진 및 연료전지를 이용한 전기생산과 DME, SNG등의 합성연료유 제조에 활용될 수 있으며, WGS 반응 및 PSA 방법에 의해 수소를 얻을 수 있다. 이와 더불어 최근에는 메탄올과 CO의 합성을 통해 얻어지는 초산제조 공정에서의 원료로서 폐기물 가스화를 통한 합성가스 내의 CO를 활용하는 방안이 연구되고 있다. 이는 기존 초산 제조공정에서 CO를 생산하기 위해 소모되는 고가의 석유계(납사, 중질유) 원료를 절감할 수 있어 경제적으로 장점을 가지고 있다. 이를 위해서는 폐기물 가스화에서 발생된 합성가스 내에 포함된 금속성분, 분진등의 오염물질의 농도가 후단공정에 영향을 주지 않아야 하며, 초산제조공정의 안정적인 운전을 위해 합성가스의 CO, $H_2$ 조성 변화폭이 ${\pm}5%$이하로 유지되어야 하는 기술적인 문제를 해결해야 한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 폐기물 가스화 시스템의 운전특성을 통해 환경성, 기술성, 경제성을 분석 평가 할 수 있도록 구성된 분석 프레임워크를 이용하여, 초산제조공정에 적용하기위한 상용급 폐기물 가스화 시스템의 특성을 비교 분석하였다.

Measurement of Electric Power Consumption of Residences in Southeastern Fishing Village of Korea (남해안 어촌마을 주거시설의 전력소비량 실측조사)

  • To serve basic data for the design of capacity and management of Distributed(or On-site) Power Generation System using renewable energies, this study measured the electric power consumption(hereafter abbreviated as EPC) of 5 families of fishing village located at island in southeastern area of Korea. The results are as following. The maximum monthly average EPC occurred in December or January. Although the total monthly EPC of H family is 2~3 times more than J family, individual monthly EPC of J family is 10~30 % more than H family. Hourly EPC pattern shows that the maximum EPC occurred between 20~24 o'clock in summer season, but it occurred between 18~24 o'clock in winter season. Compared to summer, the height of fluctuation through a day is small. And the EPC patterns of weekdays and weekend estimated as very similar.
