  • In the event of a maritime distress accident, rapid search and rescue operations using rescue assets are very important to ensure the safety and life of drowning person's at sea. In this paper, we analyzed the surface layer current in the northwest sea area of Ulleungdo by applying machine learning such as multiple linear regression, decision tree, support vector machine, vector autoregression, and LSTM to the meteorological information collected from the maritime observation buoy. And we predicted the drowning person's route at sea based on the predicted current direction and speed information by constructing each prediction model. Comparing the various machine learning models applied in this paper through the performance evaluation measures of MAE and RMSE, the LSTM model is the best. In addition, LSTM model showed superior performance compared to the other models in the view of the difference distance between the actual and predicted movement point of drowning person.

  • We propose a marine observation system using existing light buoys to observe various marine information of marine locations. Our proposed ocean observation system is composed of the existing standard light buoy type and can be easily connected to the light buoy. The proposed marine observation system measures the mean wave height, maximum wave height, mean wave height and water temperature measured in the ocean. Besides, it can measure the air pressure, temperature, wind speed and wind speed in real time. In order to measure important peaks in marine observations, 2200 peak data are collected for 10 minutes, and the collected data are subjected to spectral analysis to extract significant wave and wave period data. The developed system removes the noise by using the filter because the marine observation system attaches to the light buoy. We compare and analyze the measurement data of the existing proven floating marine observation system and the standard equivalent system developed. Also, it is proved that the data of the standard type backbone ocean observation system developed through the comparative experiment is similar to that of the existing ocean observation system.

  • A study on the IR(InfraRed) signature of a naval ship has been performed using well known IR signature analysis software, ShipIR/NTCS. Variations of the IR signature radiated from skins of a naval ship have been investigated according to the monthly averaged marine climate conditions. An unclassified destroyer model with and without applying the washdown system was applied to compare the influence on the signature under the background changes. The marine background models were created from the observed data by a buoy of Korea Meterological Administration(KMA). The sensitivity of the ship signature against the climate variables such as air temperature, sea temperature, relative humidity has been studied as well. The seasons which show extreme(max, min) skin signature change by whether the washdown is applied or not. The sensitivities of the air temperature and the sea temperature for a dry-ship reversed by applying the washdown on the ship surfaces.

  • The sea-surface winds during the passage of 64 typhoons for 1979-1999 were simulated using two different typhoon wind models, ie, typhoon parametric model(TPM) and primitive vortex model(PVM). The model hindcast winds were compared with the winds observed at JMA ocean buoys(22001 and 21002) and Kyushu ocean observation tower. The analysis of ms and relative errors between hindcast and observed winds was made to find the accuracy and sensitivity of the typhoon wind prediction models. Both hindcast winds of TPM and PVM underestimate the observed typhoon winds, but PVM winds are more closer to the observations with less rms and relative errors. Relative errors of two model winds were small within 200km from typhoon center, but TPM's relative errors increase up to 70% as the radial distance from typhoon center increases beyond > 200km although PVM's relative errors remain in 20% with less sensitive to the distance from typhoon centers.

  • This paper presents a new method of sampling the climatic data for infrared signature analysis. Historical hourly data from a stationary marine buoy of KMA(Korean Meteorological Administration) are used to select a small number of sample points (N=100) to adequately cover the range of statistics(PDF, CDF) displayed by the original data set (S=56,670). The method uses a coarse bin to subdivide the variable space ($3^5$=243 bins) to make sample points cover the original data range, and a single-point ranking system to select individual points so that uniform coverage (1/N = 0.01) is obtained for each variable. The principal component analysis is used to calculate a joint probability of the coupled climatic variables. The selected sample data show good agreement to the original data set in statistical distribution and they will be used for statistical analysis of infrared signature and susceptibility of naval ships.

  • This paper describes verification results for the ocean analysis field produced by the Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean (NEMO) of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) against observed Argo floats and drift buoys over the western Pacific Ocean and the equatorial Pacific during 2020~2021. This is confirmed by a comparison of the verification for the newly updated version of the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model/Navy Coupled Ocean Data Assimilation (HYCOM/NCODA) against same observations. NEMO shows that the vertical ocean temperature is much closer to the Argo floats than HYCOM for most seasons in terms of bias and root mean square error. On the other hand, there are overall considerable cold biases for HYCOM, which may be due to the more rapid decreasing temperature at the shallow thermocline in HYCOM. Conclusion demonstrated that the NEMO analysis for ocean temperature is more reliable than the analysis produced by the latest version of HYCOM as well as by the out-of-date HYCOM applied to the precedent study. The surface ocean current produced by NEMO also shows 14% closer to the AOML (Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory) in situ drift buoys observations than HYCOM over the western Pacific Ocean. Over the equatorial Pacific, however, HYCOM shows slightly closer to AOML observation than NEMO in some seasons. Overall, this study suggests that the resulting information may be used to promote more use of NEMO analysis.

  • This study investigated the accuracy of mean sea level pressure(MSLP) predicted by weather models around Korean Peninsula during typhoon Manyi and Usagi period in 2007. The mesoscale regional model, RDAPS, KWRF with 30 and 10 km horizontal resolution and developed high-resolution WRF models with 9 and 3 km horizontal resolutions are used to predict the features of MSLP. The predicted MSLP aspects were verified using observed results from total 35 coastal stations including AWS and ocean buoy. Although 4 models showed the reasonable MLSP results during typhoon periods, the highest resolution, 3km WRF model show the most accurate MSLP results with maximum 69% and 60% improvement with comparisons of RDAPS and KWRF, respectively.

  • In order to overcome the limitation of deterministic forecast, an ensemble forecasting system for regional ocean wave is developed. This system predicts ocean wind waves based on the meteorological forcing from the Ensemble Prediction System for Global of the Korea Meteorological Administration, which is consisted of 24 ensemble members. The ensemble wave forecasting system is evaluated by using the moored buoy data around Korea. The root mean squared error (RMSE) of ensemble mean showed the better performance than the deterministic forecast system after 2 days, especially RMSE of ensemble mean is improved by 15% compared with the deterministic forecast for 3-day lead time. It means that the ensemble method could reduce the uncertainty of the deterministic prediction system. The Relative Operating Characteristic as an evaluation scheme of probability prediction was bigger than 0.9 showing high predictability, meaning that the ensemble wave forecast could be usefully applied.

  • In recent years, strong typhoons have passed South Korea almost every year and severe damages were incurred directly and indirectly. However, instances where wave and wind data were procured from the offshore approach path of the typhoon are very rare and thus researchers are experiencing difficulties in obtaining calibration and verification data of typhoon-generated wave modeling. This paper provides a synthesis of records of observations by the Korea Meteorological Administration and Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology on storm waves generated by the typhoons SONGDA, NABI, and SHANSHAN that passed from 2004 to 2006 in order to help researchers interested in typhoon-generated wave numerical modeling. Although the trajectories of typhoon NABI and SHANSHAN were east of the Korea Strait, a significant wave height of 8.3 m was measured at Namhyeongjedo located east of Geojedo. Moreover, an unprecedented significant wave height of 12.2 m was measured for both typhoons at a station 1.4 km away from Yeongil Bay breakwater. Meanwhile, a comparative analysis of data obtained with a ocean data buoy at Geojedo and a Directional Waverider at Namhyeongjedo showed maximum wave heights that were similar but considerably different significant wave heights.
