  • Topography of beach line is keeping stability for several years, their soil values have been maintained in balances. Install of coastal structures have caused deformation for beaches and acted as a function to structures. Therefore, quantitative prediction of beaches topography according to structure install is required to prevent the beaches deformation and progress proper coastal preservation work. In this study, we analyzed coastal changes caused by erosion and accretion according to development and drew up a cross-section to share 8 stations using coordinates and depth surveying in groin of Soheuksan island port. Elevation distribution and changes by observation period is calculated -0.30m~+0.20m after comparing results of five months in October 7, 2004 surveying results and fell into insignificance. We thinks periodic observation of coastal erosion and accretion take place for the season and long-term coastal changes in beaches width is analyzed.

  • Scale effects of stability, run-up, run-down and reflection of layered coastal structures are investigated through the experiments with 7 kinds of hydraulic scale models. The occurrence mechanism and the control method of scale effects are also discussed. As a result, it is found that the similarity of permeability of inner layers plays an important role in the occurrence of scale effects, which has been neglected in the most of conventional model tests. To assure the best scale effects for permeable coastal structures, control of Reynolds numbers of the porous media flow in each layer is recommended. It is also found that Reynolds numbers in revetment, filter, and core layer must be greater than $2{\times}10^4$, $3{\times}10^3$, and $1{\times}10^3$, respectively.

  • The tidal current patterns at Keum River Estuary before and after the construction of coastal structures were compared according to the CASES. The depth-integrated and tidal difference treatment applied FLOW2DH numerical model was used for the tidal current predictions. The test conditions consisted of before construction of coastal structures (CASE1), after construction of coastal structures (CASE2), and the addition of watergate operation(CASE1Q and CASE2Q), and present (CASE3). CASE1 showed a stable tidal current pattern, such as a natural estuary. In CASE2, the tidal current velocities and directions of the Keum River Estuary were changed due to the installed coastal structures. In particular, the tidal current velocities of the Gaeya open channel sections (P5~P9) in CASE2 were calculated to be 10~30% larger than that of CASE1. In the case of the Gunsan Inner Harbor (P4), which is closest to the Geum River Estuary, the ebb flow rate was approximately 250~300% faster than that of other CASEs due to the discharge of the watergate operation for 2.7 hours during the ebb of CASE1Q and CASE2Q. This will affect sediment transport, and it is predicted to lead to seabed changes. CASE3 is considered to be entering the stabilization stage according to the simulation of the tidal current velocities and directions of the Keum River Estuary and the surrounding coastal area.

  • In recent years, there's been strong demand for coastal structures that have a permeability that serves water affinity and disaster prevention from wave attack. The aim of this study is to examine the wave transformation, including wave run-up that propagates over the coastal structures with a steep slope. A numerical model based on the nonlinear shallow water equation, together with the unsteady nonlinear Darcy law for fluid motion in permeable underlayer and laboratory measurements was carried out in terms of the free surface elevations and fluid particle velocities for the cases of regular and irregular waves over 1:5 impermeable and permeable slopes. The numerical results were used to evaluate the application and limitations of the PBREAK numerical model. The numerical model could predict the cross-shore variation of the wave profile reasonably, but showed less accurate results in the breaking zone that the mass and momentum influx is exchanged the most. Except near the wave crest, the computed depth averaged velocities could represent the measured profile below the trough level fairly well.
