Topography of beach line is keeping stability for several years, their soil values have been maintained in balances. Install of coastal structures have caused deformation for beaches and acted as a function to structures. Therefore, quantitative prediction of beaches topography according to structure install is required to prevent the beaches deformation and progress proper coastal preservation work. In this study, we analyzed coastal changes caused by erosion and accretion according to development and drew up a cross-section to share 8 stations using coordinates and depth surveying in groin of Soheuksan island port. Elevation distribution and changes by observation period is calculated -0.30m~+0.20m after comparing results of five months in October 7, 2004 surveying results and fell into insignificance. We thinks periodic observation of coastal erosion and accretion take place for the season and long-term coastal changes in beaches width is analyzed.

Coastal erosion and its impact on human activities as well as the economic damage and environmental conservation of coastal area is one of major concern in the national policies. In this study, we conducted physical investigations to evaluate effects of erosion in the Geojin beach, which is located nearby the Geojin Port, for a detecting of shoreline change and beach cross-sectional area. The results showed that significant coastal erosion of the Geojin beach has occurred by the complex resources of natural factor, such as rising sea level, storm surges, high wave, and man-made construction. Especially, due to the sand supplement from Jasan river, the section which is nearby the estuary of Jasan river is maintained as a stable beach, whereas beach erosion of the other site in GW04 section has been increased indeed. Therefore, we suggest that it is need to continuous monitoring using DGPS and various surveying techniques to prevent beach erosion onto the GW04 section.

This study presents a close-range photogrammetry that is applicable to beach profile estimation using a non-metric camera. Based on the analysis of oblique video image in which the video camera was installed on a horizontal plane and the field of view was fixed, a new equation to analyze a photograph was developed considering the following aspects: (1) camera is allowed to be rotated about its optical axis and (2) a simple error model is adopted to correct lens distortion and other systematic errors associated with the non-metric camera, which improves accuracy of non-metric imageries. To test the modified technique, photographs of the beach were taken near the Donghae City in February, 1998. In addition, beach profiles were surveyed with conventional dumpy level and surveying staff. RMS error between the estimated and measured beach profiles is less than 10 cm in elevation.

Number of coastal protection structures have been increased rapidly due to rising sea levels and deteriorated sea conditions. Coastal structures should be designed to meet coastal engineering requirements and ecosystem conditions, while they are not lost or removed. In this study, trapezoidal gabion block was developed for the purpose, and two-dimensional laboratory experiments were conducted to validate applicability of the block. The experiments were carried out with eight types of erosive and accretive wave conditions. As a result, it was confirmed that the gabion blocks have a feature of preventing erosion of beach. The newly designed gabion blocks could be an alternative as a countermeasure method for beach erosion.

Three beaches of the Seogwang-ri coast in the western part of Wu Island, Jeju-do, are solely composed of rhodoliths (red algal nodules). The beach sediments are coarse sand to granule in size and they show the banded distribution according to size. Commonly the larger pebble-sized rhodoliths are concentrated near the rocky coast, resulting from the transportation of the nodules from shallow marine environments by intermittent typhoons. Based on the internal texture of the rhodoliths, it appears that crustose red algae, Lithophyllum sp., is the main contributor for the formation of the rhodolith. The coarse sand to granule-sized grains show that they started to grow from the nucleus as rhodoliths, but the surface was severely eroded by waves. However, the pebble to cobble-sized grains exhibit the complete growth pattern of rhodoliths and sometimes contain other calcareous skeletons. It is common that encrusting red algae are intergrown with encrusting bryozoan. The surface morphology of rhodolith tends to change from the concentric to domal shape towards the outer part. This suggests that the rhodolith grew to a certain stage by rolling, but it grew in more quiet condition without rolling as it became larger. Aragonite and calcite cements can be found in the pores within rhodoliths (conceptacle, intraskeletal pore in bryozoan, and boring), and this means that shallow marine cementation has occurred during their growth. Growth of numerous rhodoliths in shallow marine environment near the Seogwang-ri coast indicates that this area has suitable oceanographic conditions for their growth such as warm water temperature (about 19$^{\circ}C$ in average) and clear water condition due to the lack of terrestrial input of volcanoclastic sediments. Fast tidal current and high wave energy in the shallow water setting can provide suitable conditions enough for their rolling and growth. Typhoons passing this area every summer also influence on the growth of rhodoliths.

Using the measured data of waves and shore-line, we reviewed the grand circulation process and seasonal variation of beach cusp at the Mang-Bang beach from the perspective of trapped mode Edge waves known as the driving mechanism of beach cusp. In order to track the temporal and spatial variation trends of beach cusp, we quantify the beach cusp in terms of its wave length and amplitude detected by threshold crossing method. In doing so, we also utilize the spectral analysis method and its associated spectral mean sand wave number. From repeated period of convergence and ensuing splitting of sand waves detected from the yearly time series of spectral mean sand wave number of beach cusp, it is shown that the grand circulation process of beach cusp at Mang-Bang beach are occurring twice from 2017. 4. 26 to 2018. 4. 20. For the case of beach area, it increased by $14,142m^2$ during this period, and the shore-line advanced by 18 m at the northen and southern parts of the Mang-Bang beach whereas the shore-line advanced by 2.4 m at the central parts of Mang-Bang beach. It is also worthy of note that the beach area rapidly increased by $30,345m^2$ from 2017.11.26. to 2017.12.22. which can be attributed to the nature of coming waves. During this period, mild swells of long period were prevailing, and their angle of attack were next to zero. These characteristics of waves imply that the main transport mode of sediment would be the cross-shore. Considering the facts that self-healing capacity of natural beaches is realized via the cross-shore sediment once temporarily eroded. it can be easily deduced that the sediment carried by the boundary layer streaming toward the shore under mild swells which normally incident toward the Mang-Bang beach makes the beach area rapidly increase from 2017.11.26. to 2017.12.22.
A sedimentation study of the Cheonripo intertidal beach sands and its related coastal dune sands, Cheonripo, Seosan Gun, Choongcheong Namdo, Korea has been carried out based on a series of several summer time field surveys. Each subenvironment in the Cheonripo coastal zone, that is, intertidal sand beach and coastal sand dune, could be differenciated in terms of textural parameters. The coastal dune sands are finer than the intertidal beach sands in mean grain size, and the sorting of dune sands is relatively poorer than that of intertidal beach sands. However, the skewness of intertidal beach and dune sands is commonly positive. Such textural parameters are characteristically differentiated on scatter diagrams. A series of megaripple bedform observations for 6 tidal cycle periods(August 13, 14 and 15, 1990) are interpreted to find out migration pattern of bedforms and its related sand migration. Such migration natures are shown on the tables and figures.

A numerical model is applied for predicting two-dimensional beach and dune erosion during severe storms. The model uses equation of sediment continuity and dynamic equation, governing the on-offshore sediment transport due to a disequilibrium of wave energy dissipation. And the model also uses sediment transport rate parameter K from dimensional analysis instead of that recommended by Kriebel. During a storm, a beach profile evolves to a form where the depth at the surf zone is related to the distance seaward of the waterline. In general, the erosion in the beach profile is found to be sensitive to equilibrium profile parameter, sediment transport rate parameter, storm surge level and breaking wave height.

After the notorious Taean Oil spill in Dec. 2007, a series of sand fences made of fishing net were installed in front of foredune in Shindu dune area. This paper aims to understand the temporal and spatial characteristics of morphological changes of the beach and foredune. About 1m high sand accumulated around sand fences for the last 2 years. While a lot of sand deposited during the winter season (from autumn to spring), small amount of sand eroded and deposited during summer season (from spring to autumn) without big morphological changes. These results mean that sand fences help nature deposit sand near beach and foredune area.

As beaches throughout Korea have suffered great losses of sand due to artificial developments and meteorological phenomena, particularly typhoons, it is necessary to monitor beaches that are prone to erosion continuously, establish and enforce a comprehensive plan to attack coastal erosion with the object of the long-term management. However, debates and temporary measures, not based on accurate coastal zone surveys and analyses, have been established up to now. Therefore, with Haeundae sand beach as a case study, we proposed methods to collect accurate spatial data of the coastline and the sand beach through GPS survey. And we detected and analyzed topographic changes resulting from Typhoon Nabi quantitatively and qualitatively, by using GIS technique. Results showed a mean elevation of 1.95 m, a total area of 53,441 $m^2$, and a total volume of 104,639 $m^3$ after Typhoon Nabi. Mean elevation rose 0.06 m between the pre- and the post-typhoon surveys by a protective shore wall. However, strong winds and north-northeast surges brought by the typhoon caused erosion of the area and the volume, by 3,096 $m^2$ and 2,320 $m^3$. Accurate spatial databases of coastal zones based on integrated GPS GIS techniques and quantitative and qualitative analyses of topographical changes will help Korea develop systematic and effective countermeasures against coastal erosion.
