Decision Making Support System for VTSO using Extracted Ships' Tracks (항적모델 추출을 통한 해상교통관제사 의사결정 지원 방안)

  • Ships' tracking data are being monitored and collected by vessel traffic service center in real time. In this paper, we intend to contribute to vessel traffic service operators' decision making through extracting ships' tracking patterns and models based on these data. Support Vector Machine algorithm was used for vessel track modeling to handle and process the data sets and k-fold cross validation was used to select the proper parameters. Proposed data processing methods could support vessel traffic service operators' decision making on case of anomaly detection, calculation ships' dead reckoning positions and etc.

A Comparative Study of Vessel Trajectory Prediction Error based on AIS and LTE-Maritime Data (AIS 및 LTE-Maritime 데이터를 활용한 항적 예측 오차 비교연구)

  • AIS is widely utilized in vessel traffic services for marine traffic safety. In 2021, Korea deployed the high-speed maritime wireless communication system (LTE-Maritime) on the sea following IMO's proposal for the introduction of e-Navigation. In this paper, vessel trajectory data from AIS and LTE-Maritime were used for vessel trajectory prediction to compare and analyze the two systems. The results show that the trajectory prediction error of LTE-Maritime was smaller than that of AIS due to the granular and uniform data provided by LTE-Maritime. Additionally, it was revealed that time interval is the most important factor influencing the errors in trajectory prediction, with the prediction error of LTE-Maritime growing at a slower rate of 17% than AIS. This research contributes to the literature by quantitatively comparing AIS and LTE-Maritime systems for the first time.

  • In recent years, the maritime traffic environment has been changing in various ways, and the traffic volume has been increasing constantly. Accordingly, the requirements for maritime traffic analysis have become diversified. To this end, traffic characteristics must first be analyzed using vessel trajectory data. However, as the conventional method is mostly manual, it requires a considerable amount of time and effort, and errors may occur during data processing. In addition, ensuring the reliability of the analysis results is difficult, because this method considers the subjective opinion of analysts. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an automated method of traffic network generation for maritime traffic analysis. In the experiment, spatiotemporal features are analyzed using data collected at Mokpo Harbor over six months. The proposed method can automatically generate a traffic network reflecting the traffic characteristics of the experimental area. In addition, it can be applied to a large amount of trajectory data. Finally, as the spatiotemporal characteristics can be analyzed using the traffic network, the proposed method is expected to be used in various maritime traffic analyses.

  • Obstacle limitation surfaces are imaginary space surfaces that must be clear of obstacles for the aircraft to safely take off and land on the aerodrome. These surfaces are closely related to the safety of the VFR aircraft, which require a pilot to be able to see outside the cockpit, to control the aircraft's altitude, navigate, and avoid obstacles and other aircraft. The Republic of Korea, which has a lot of restrictions on the use of airspace, cannot provide a rich operating environment for VFR aircraft. Under these circumstances, safer operation will not be guaranteed if additional factors that directly or indirectly affect existing VFR routes, such as drone delivery services. This study analyzes and models the track distribution of each VFR section based on radar track data around a specific airport. Through this study, we estimate the three-dimensional space for VFR aircraft and provide the data for future research such as airspace analysis of VFR corridors and correlation with obstacle limitation surfaces.

A Development of Analysis System for Vessel Traffic Display and Statistics based on Maritime-BigData (해상-빅데이터 기반 선박 항적 표시 및 해상교통량 통계 분석 시스템의 개발)

  • Recently, a lot of studies that applying the big data technology to various fields, are progressing actively. In the maritime domain, the big data is the meaningful information which makes and gathers by the navigation and communication equipment from the many ships on the ocean. Also, importance of the maritime safety is emphasized, because maritime accidents are rising with increasing of maritime traffic. To support prevention of maritime accidents, in this paper, we developed a vessel traffic display and statistic system based on AIS messages from the many vessels of maritime. Also, to verify the developed system, we conducted tests for vessel track display function and vessel traffic statistic function based on two test scenarios. Therefore, we verified the effectiveness of the developed system for vessel tracks display, abnormal navigation patterns, checking failure of AIS equipments and maritime traffic statistic analyses.

  • 시뮬레이션 기반의 해상교통 분석 방법은 대상 항만의 항적 데이터를 이용하여 교통 특성 모델을 구축하고, 이를 통해 해상교통 현상을 재현함으로써 분석을 수행하는 방법이다. 교통 특성 모델은 교통 현상을 수치적으로 표현한 일반화 된 모형을 말하며, 모델링 작업에 많은 시간과 노력이 소요된다. 본 논문에서는 해상 교통 특성을 생성하기 위한 자동화 된 프로세스를 제안하며, 실제 목포항의 항적 데이터에 적용하여 교통특성 정보 생성 방법으로서의 활용 가능성을 검토하였다.

Research on the Development of Distance Metrics for the Clustering of Vessel Trajectories in Korean Coastal Waters (국내 연안 해역 선박 항적 군집화를 위한 항적 간 거리 척도 개발 연구)

  • This study developed a new distance metric for vessel trajectories, applicable to marine traffic control services in the Korean coastal waters. The proposed metric is designed through the weighted summation of the traditional Hausdorff distance, which measures the similarity between spatiotemporal data and incorporates the differences in the average Speed Over Ground (SOG) and the variance in Course Over Ground (COG) between two trajectories. To validate the effectiveness of this new metric, a comparative analysis was conducted using the actual Automatic Identification System (AIS) trajectory data, in conjunction with an agglomerative clustering algorithm. Data visualizations were used to confirm that the results of trajectory clustering, with the new metric, reflect geographical distances and the distribution of vessel behavioral characteristics more accurately, than conventional metrics such as the Hausdorff distance and Dynamic Time Warping distance. Quantitatively, based on the Davies-Bouldin index, the clustering results were found to be superior or comparable and demonstrated exceptional efficiency in computational distance calculation.

Since the container terminal was opened in 1997, maximum $40,000\sim50,000$ DWT containership have been incoming and outgoing. Therefore marine traffic characteristics were analyzed for Gamcheon harbor and Gamcheon approaching waters, included the track and traffic volumes of peak hours period in inbound/outbound and front sea area of the harbor in present.

원격지에서의 비상상황 조기 식별을 위한 항적 데이터 기반 연구

  • IMO MASS CODE가 활발하게 개발되고 있으며, 원격운영센터(ROC)에 대한 용어, 개념, 임무 등에 대한 논의가 진행되고 있다. 자율운항선박이 원격제어, 무인제어 등의 단계로 발전하기 위해서는 원격지에서의 자율운항선박에 대한 상황 모니터링이 지속되어야 하고, 비상상황을 선제적으로 대응할 수 있어야 한다. 본 연구에서는 원격지에 대한 비상상황 식별을 위해 항적 데이터를 기반으로 DB 구축 및 알고리즘 개발을 수행하였고, 이를 원격운영자의 관점에서 프로토타입으로 기능 구현을 시도하였다. DB 및 알고리즘간 연계와 물표 데이터 수신 및 처리 등을 실시간으로 수행하여 다각적인 모니터링 및 잠재된 비상상황에 대한 알람 기능 등을 개발하였다. 본 시스템은 울산해역을 대상으로 개발되었으며, 향후 성능 평가를 통해 고도화할 예정이다.
