  • For the safety of aircraft and accuracy of bombs, many companies have researched the new concept of adaptive kit to flying-bombs. For the long distance flying, it's normally used deployed high-aspect ratio wing because of limited volume. The probabilities of large elastic deformation and flutter are increased due to decreased stiffness of high-aspect ratio wing. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics and computational structure dynamics interaction methodology are applied for prediction of aerodynamic characteristics. FLUENT and ABAQUS are used to calculate fluid and structural dynamics. Code-bridge was made base on the compactly supported radial basis function to execute interpolation and mapping. There are some differences between rigid body and fluid-structure interaction analysis which are results of aerodynamics characteristics due to structural deformation. Small successive vibration was observed by interaction.

  • STEP Cube Lab. classified as a pico-satellite has been being developed by SSTL(Space Technology Synthesis Laboratory) in Chosun University. Its main mission objective is to perform the on-orbit verification of core space technologies, which will be the potential candidates for future space missions. In this paper, to guarantee successful mission operation of the cube satellite under extremely severe space thermal environment condition, the system level thermal design and analysis has been performed. The effectiveness of the design has been verified through on-orbit thermal analysis of cube satellite.

  • The mission objective of STEP Cube Lab. (Cube Laboratory for Space Technology Experimental Project) classified as a pico-class satellite is to verify the technical effectiveness of payloads such as variable emittance radiator, SMA washer, oscillating heat pipe and MEMS based solid propellant thruster researched at domestic universities. In addition, the MEMS concentrating photovoltaic power system and the non-explosive holding and separation mechanism with the advantages of high constraint force and low shock level will be developed as the primary payloads for on-orbit verification. In this study, the feasibility of the mission actualization has been confirmed by the preliminary system design.

  • Flight and Qualification Models of Single Board Computer (SBC), called On-Board Computer (OBC), for HAUSAT-l picosatellite, which is scheduled to launch on September, 2004 by Russian "Dnepr" launch vehicle, have been developed. The OBC of HAUSAT-1 has been designed with some improved features compared to other picosatellites. A multifunctional controller and up-to-date SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) and 1-Wire interface are implemented to simplify the harness routing and to minimize the mass and size of OBC. The improved fault-tolerant architecture design methodology is incorporated in the HAUSAT-1 OBC to protect against space radiation environment. The functions of the OBC were fully tested and verified by the Electrical Test Bed (ETB) model. This paper is also addressing the environmental test results, such as random vibration and thermal vacuum tests.

  • The finite volume method for radiation is applied for the analysis of radiative base heating by SE and PE of the aircraft exhaust plume. The exhaust plume is considered as an absorbing, emitting, and scattering medium, while the base plane is assumed to be cold and black. The radiative properties of non-gray gases are obtained through the WSGGM, and the particle is modelled as spheres. The present method is validated by comparing the results with those of the backward Monte-Carlo method and then the radiative base heating characteristics are analyzed by changing such various parameters as particle concentration, temperature, and scattering phase function. The results show that the radiative heat flux coming into the base plane decreases with altitude and distance, but it increases as the particle temperature increases. The forward scattering of particles increases PE while it decreases SE.

  • Space radiation environments depend on satellite mission orbit, period, and date, and it can be predicted by simulation. Total Ionizing Dose(TID) can be predicted by Dose-depth Curve which only inform the dose level depending on the shielding thickness. So detail effective shielding analysis considering real structure is necessary to predict part level TID. For this purpose, program is developed to calculate shielding thickness distribution by structure modeling and ray trace from certain point in the structure. Finally TID at certain point in the 3-dimensional structure can be calculated by integration of shielding distribution result and dose-depth curve data. Using this program, TID is analyzed at part level certain point by modeling of equipment box structure in the satellite.

  • An image-reconstruction technology, involving the deployment of an unmanned mobility equipped with high-speed LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) has been proposed to reconstruct the shape of abandoned mine. Unmanned mobility operation is remarkably useful in abandoned mines fraught with operational difficulties including, but not limited to, obstacles, sludge, underwater and narrow tunnel with the diameter of 1.5 m or more. For cases of real abandoned mines, quadruped robots, quadcopter drones and underwater drones are respectively deployed on land, air, and water-filled sites. In addition to the advantage of scanning the abandoned mines with 2D solid-state lidar sensors, rotation of radiation at an inclination angle offers an increased efficiency for simultaneous reconstruction of mineshaft shapes and detecting obstacles. Sensor and robot posture were used for computing rotation matrices that helped compute geographical coordinates of the solid-state lidar data. Next, the quadruped robot scanned the actual site to reconstruct tunnel shape. Lastly, the optimal elements necessary to increase utility in actual fields were found and proposed.

  • GOCi (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) is one of the COMS payloads that KARI is currently developing and scheduled to be in operation from around 2008. Its primary objective is to monitor the Korean coastal water environmental condition. We report the current progress in development of the integrated optical model as one of the key analysis tools for the GOCI in-orbit performance verification. The model includes the Sun as the emitting light source. The curved Earth surface section of 2500 km x 2500 km includingthe Korean peninsular os defined as a Lambertian scattering surface consisted of land and sea surface. From its geostationary orbit, the GOCI optical system observes the reflected light from the surfaces with varying reflectance representing the changes in its environmental conditions. The optical ray tracing technique was used to demonstrate the GOCI in-orbit performances such as red tide detection. The computational concept, simulation results and its implications to the on-going development of GOCI are presented.

  • This paper proposes an ultra-wideband Log-Periodic Dipole Array(LPDA) antenna for the feeder of a reflector antenna to be used for airborne spinning direction-finding and detecting wideband signals. To obtain the ultra-wideband characteristics over the 20:1 bandwidth from S to Ka band, the radiation elements of the antenna were printed on a substrate and a wedge-typed dielectric supporter with robust structure was inserted between the substrates. Also, the center portion of the supporter was replaced by a styrofoam material to reduce the supporter weight. The 5-dB return loss of the designed LPDA antenna showed ultra-wideband characteristics, which are 37.57:1(1.09~40.95 GHz) in the simulation and 33.85:1(1.31~44.35 GHz) in the measurement. We achieved the required gains of 5.78 dBi in the simulation and 5.76 dBi in the measurement in the operating band. The proposed robust, light-weight, and ultra-wideband LPDA antenna confirmed that it can be applied for airborne applications.

  • In this paper, we designed a blade antenna for VHF-UHF band(500 MHz~3 GHz) to be used as aircraft antennas. Unlike previously reported researches that use high-dielectric materials and insert rectangular extended grounds, the antenna structure was designed by optimizing the curvature of both a radiator and an extended ground whose shape is varied by changing the exponent of an n-th polynomial. Based on the optimized structure, we measured impedance matching and gain performances to evaluate the antenna in the VHF-UHF band(500 MHz~3 GHz). As a result, we confirmed that the antenna shows matching characteristics of less than -6 dB and has average gains of greater than -5 dBi in the entire VHF-UHF band.
