  • In this study the occurrence and mineralogical characteristics of clay minerals from the Munhyun-dong landslide area in Pusan city were examined by XRD, SEM, and chemical analyses. Several types of clay minerals such as halloysite, vermiculite, mica/vermiculite interstratified mineral, vermiculite/smectite interstratified mineral, kaolinite and illite are found abundantly in the area. The occurrence of clay minerals suggest that they have been formed by weathering of andesite which is the bedrock of the area. It is believed that halloysite was formed in the early stage of weathering, and vermiculite, mica/vermiculite interstratified mineral and mica/vermiculite interstratified mineral were formed in the middle stage, and finally, kaolinite was formed. The clay minerals occurring in the central part of the landsliding area and within the slip surface are dominated by expandable minerals such as halloysite, vermiculite and vermiculite/smectite interstratified mineral. These clay minerals expand by absorbing water and effectively decrease the shear resistance of the rock mass, and therefore, they could be an important factor for the landslide. The analyses of geology and mineralogical characteristics of the area suggest that the landslide was caused by combination of various factors including steep slope, heavy rainfall, abundant joints, alteration of the rocks, and occurrence of expandable clay minerals. The result of this study suggests that the investigation for the prevention of possible landslide must include the examination of clay mineralogy as well as the site geology.

  • The stacking configuration of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, achieved via the filament winding process, exhibits distinct variations compared to conventional FRP composite stacking arrangements. Consequently, it becomes challenging to ascertain the influence of mechanical properties based on the typical stacking structures. Thus, it becomes imperative to enhance the mechanical behavior and optimize the interleaved structures to improve overall performance. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impact of incorporating amorphous halloysite nanotubes (A-HNTs) within different layers of five unique layer arrangements on the low-velocity impact properties of interleaved carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) structures. The low-velocity impact characteristics of the laminate were validated using a drop weight impact test, wherein the resulting impact damage modes and extent of damage were compared and evaluated under microscopic analysis. Each interleaved structure laminate according to whether nanoparticles are added was compared at impact energies of 10 J and 15 J. In the case of 10 J, the absorption energy showed a similar tendency in each structure. However, at 15 J, the absorption energy varies from structure to structure. Among them, a structure in which nanoparticles are not added exhibits the highest absorption energy. Additionally, various impact fracture modes were observed in each structure through optical microscopy.

  • Mullitization of halloysite was examined with special attention to the influence of polytypism and impurities on the phase transformation. The phase transformation sequence in halloysite is identical with those in kaolinite and in dickite. Difference in the phase transformation above $1000^{\circ}C$ in kaolin minerals is attributed to the different crystal structures of metakaolins or the effect of impurities. Growth of mullite crytals in the discordered kaolinte including halloysite or illite occurs at about $100^{\circ}C$ lower temperature. Cristobalite is also hardly produced.

  • The X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy study of the kaolin sample from Sancheong area show that the halloysite occurs as hydrated 10$\AA$ form. It implies that the 7$\AA$ reflection and hk-line splitting in the X-ray diffractogram are ascribed to kaolinite. Kaolinite in Sancheong kaolin is of a disordered type. It tends to be enriched in the colored part of kaolin samples. Quantitative analyses show that kaolin contains 16-57% halloysite and 10-55%kaolinite.

  • Early weathering products of anorthosite were investigated by using scanning electron microscopy in order to trace the development of halloysite particles and aggregates. Tiny short tubes or spheres precipitate on the plagioclase surface in the initial stage of weathering and form the compact globular aggregates. With continued growth, several globules are coalesced into wrinkled halloysite aggregates, and short tubes or spheres in globules grow into long tubes forming sheaf-like aggregates. Particle shape of halloysite varies with changing supersaturation degree of weathering solution, and determines the morphology of halloysite aggregates.

  • Weathering of hornfels pebble in the marine terrace deposits, Yangnam-Myon, Gyeongju was investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and chemical analysis. In the early stage of weathering, only plagioclase was leached leaving pores. With progress of weathering, biotite and chlorite were tranformed to hydrobiotite and chlorite-vermiculite, respectively. Quartz, K-feldspar, and muscovite were not altered. Thickness of weathering rinds and their mineralogical characteristics were different between terraces of different elevations. In the lower second terrace, the weathering of pebble was dominated by the decomposition of plagioclase, while in the upper third terrace, weathering was characterized by the transformation of biotite and chlorite with precipitation of halloysite from the weathering of plagioclase. Thickness of weathering rind and weathering products were varied even within the same terrace deposit probably due to local variation of drainage conditions.

  • Clay deposits in the vicinity of the Gwangpo Bay, southern coast of Korea, occur restrictively in anorthositic masses. Laumontite and meta-halloysite are the predominant clay minerals with iron oxides at the uppermost surface. Chlorite and halloysite occur in deeper zone. Beneath the main clay horizon, but not above, some anorthositic rocks are pervasively altered to quartz, sericite, chlorite, pyrite and montmorillonite along the hydrothermal channels. The hypotheses of hydrothermal and weathering origins of the clay minerals are tested by multi-component equilibrium calculations of the reactions of modified hydrothermal water and rain water with anorthositic rocks at $100^{\circ}C\;and\;25^{\circ}C$, respectively. The calculated mineralogy from the reaction with rain water resembles natural mineral assemblage except for abundance in laumontite. The result implies that the weathering process is the main machanism of the formation of clay deposits in the area.

  • Currently, fluid transfer steel pipes take a lot of time and expense to maintain all facilities due to new construction and painting or corrosion and aging. Therefore, this study was conducted for designing a CFRP pipe structure with high corrosion resistance and chemical resistance as a substitute for steel pipes. The helical/hoop pattern was cross-laminated to improve durability, and HNT was added to suppress the moisture absorption phenomenon of the epoxy. The HNT/CFRP pipe was manufactured by a filament winding process, and performed a mechanical property test, and a moisture absorption test in distilled water at 70℃. As a result, the highest bending strength was obtained when the hoop pattern was laminated with a thickness equivalent to 0.6% of the pipe. The 0.5 wt% HNT specimen had the highest moisture absorption resistance. Also, the delamination phenomenon at the interlayer interface was delayed, resulting in the lowest strength reduction rate.

  • Several "Napseok" mines are distribute in the Miryang area where the volcanic rocks are hydrothermally altered. The "Napseok" are pyrophyllite and dickite, with a small amount of silicates such as quartz, illite, tosudite and dumortierite. Other associated minerals are oxides, hydroxides, sulfides, sulfates and phosphates. Pyrophyllite which occurs as 2M polytype exhibits that the basal spacing increases due to dehydroxylation at 750${\circ}C$. Halloysite shows tubular forms. Wavellite is precipitated in fissures during the latest stage of the hydrothermal alteration process. Five mineral zones, that is pyrophyllite-deckite, illite, halloysite, silica, and albite-chlorite zones, are recognized with decreasing alteration degree. Clay minerals were formed by leaching of Si and alkali ions fron the country rocks, considering mineral assemblages, pyrophyllite polytype and thermodynamical data reported in the literature, temperatures of formation of main clay deposits are assumed to be 270 to 350${\circ}C$.

  • The present study is focused on the granite weathering and soil formation, and the heavy metal contamination in soils in the Onsan industrial area. For profile study, soil sampling was conducted on each depth and experimental analyses have been conducted on those samples. X-ray diffraction analyses show that clay minerals consist mainly of kaolin minerals, vermiculite, and minor illite. Most of kaolin minerals in the lower kiwi of the profile consist of halloysite as confirmed by formamide intercalation, but the content of halloysite decreases gradually toward the surface since it has been transformed to kaolinite in the upper part of the profile. Thermal treatment by heating at $110^{\circ}C,\;300^{\circ}C,\;and\;550^{\circ}C$ shows a diffuse and broad peak the between 10 and $14\;{\AA}$ region in X-ray diffractograms. This suggests the possible existence of the hydroxy-Al interlayerecl vermiculite. Na-citrate extraction method reaconfirms this result showing transition of $14\;{\AA}$ peak to $10\;{\AA}$ In by removing the interlayer materials and restoring the vermiculite to its original state. The occurrence of hydroxy-Al interlayered vermiculite is also supported by soil pH distribution room 3.9 In the lower part to 3.6 in the upper part of the profile. Sequential extraction experiment was conducted to investigate the states of heavy metals in soils. The experiment shows that relatively high amounts of heavy metals are concentrated in the upper part of the profile and that most of them are bound to Fe/Mn oxides and organic matters while less concentration in clay minerals. The result indicates that most of heavy metal pollutants are concentrated in the surface soil and that the low concentrations of heavy metals in clays are mainly due to the low adsorption capacities of clay minerals such as kaolin minerals and hydroxy-Al interlayered vermiculite in acidified soil condition.
