  • Through the biographical approach, the current research purports to reconstruct the Changeprocess of values and identities on the lives of the first-generation Korean-German females in Germany from the transnational perspective. Ten interviews were conducted, using Schutze's autobiographicalnarrative interview. Interview data were analyzed through the application of Schutze's autobiographical-narrative interview and Mayring's qualitative content analysis. Findings showed that on the onset of emigration, their values centered around hybrid collectivism. Their life in the process of emigration was characteristic of a shift to hybrid individualism. Furthermore, the life at beginning of emigration was found to be characterized by a singular regional identity. The process of emigration was shown to mark the conversion into dual identity, dual regional and dual national. Some theoretical and practical suggestions for the emigrants' welfare were finally offered that were associated with the process of values and identities changes in their life.

  • Researchers have rarely explored menopausal experience in the context of the totality of women's lives, subsequently making the picture of menopause incomplete, discrete and fragmented. Respecting the totality of women's lives, this study addressed how a vulnerable group of women-low income Korean immigrant women-experience menopause within a context of multiple transitions. This is a cross-sectional study using methodological triangulation. A sample of 119 first-generation Korean immigrant women aged 40 to 60 years, who were in low-income jobs, was recruited using convenience sampling methods. From the total sample, 21 peri-or post-menopausal women were recruited for in-depth interviews following the collection of the survey data. Questionnaires, short interviews, and in- depth interviews were used to collect data. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Thematic analysis was used to interpret interview data. The findings indicate that menopause was given the lowest priority amidst women's multiple and demanding roles within a gendered multiple transitional (immigration, work and menopause) context. The lack of language clarity to describe women's experience, cultural background, inadequate knowledge, and lack of social supports made menopause hidden, invisible, and inaudible. Conclusions and implications for nursing practice are guided by the goal of understanding women's experiences and meanings of menopause and supporting women through reflecting these experiences into their health care.

  • The purpose of this study was 1) to investigate professional sports fans' perception of immigrants and changes of athletes' nationalities, and 2) to examine how the fans' perception affected the perception of changes of athletes' nationalities. Results indicated that first the fan showed a neutral attitude toward the immigrants. In the results of the regression analysis containing foreign athletes naturalized as Korean citizens as the dependent variable, independent variables (i.e., gender and acceptance) explained 39.1% and 38% of the dependent variable, respectively, within [naturalization positive]. Within [naturalization negative] female fan and exclusive perception of immigrants positively predicted the objection to changes of athletes' nationalities. Lastly, in the results of the regression analysis containing Korean athletes who naturalized as foreign citizens as the dependent variable, fans who were older and rated higher on exclusive perception of immigrants had more negative perception of the dependent variable. Female fans perceived changes of athletes nationalities as personal choice.

  • There are a number of prior studies on the poverty experience of Korean women, but little is known about the poverty experience of Korean elderly women in the U.S. The purpose of this study is to examine the poverty experiences of Korean elderly women who immigrated to the U. S. Qualitative case study methods were used to achieve these research objectives. Three Korean elderly women living in Oakland of California who received Supplemental Security Income (SSI) from the U.S. federal government were included in the study. The data were collected by conducting a total of six meetings per participant, and the researcher read the consent form directly to the participants and obtained a hand-written signature. The analysis and interpretation began by repeating the interview transcript several times, and the repeated keywords were to be understood in the context, focusing on time, space, and relationships with other people. The contextual understanding of Korean elderly women's experiences in poverty was interpreted in three dimensions: extending poverty in their mother country, double torture as female immigrants, and limiting labor due to aging and diseases. Before moving to the U.S., they had a difficult livelihood by farming and one of them had to live in poverty due to the bereavement to her husband. But even after moving to the U.S., they have continued to live in poverty. As female immigrants with low education and no special skills, they were incorporated into the periphery of the labor market in the industrialized U.S. and were forced to make a living with low wages. Korean elderly women were unable to return to the labor market in the surrounding areas due to aging and diseases, and were continuing their impoverished lives relying on SSI. From the findings, we discussed the role of the Korean immigrants community as a way to improve the quality of life for Korean elderly women in the U.S.
