  • A Hangul input method consists of two core components: key layout for primitive units (Natja), and binding rules to form more complex, composite units from primitive ones. However, careless design and implementation of an input method may result in ambiguity and inability of contiguous typing, when it comes to handle composite Hangul units. This is due to the collective nature of Hangul, namely, existence of implicit boundaries between units and syllables. This issue gets more challenging for the context-dependent 2-beolsik method, mobile environment having significantly fewer keys, and yet addition of the support for Old Hangul. For the sake of the management of complexity, we devised a system in which the binding rule is divided into two layers rather than one. Based on this concept, we implemented a tool program that, given the primitive units and their binding rules, generates input details of every composite unit and detects any potential ambiguity and conflicts. We presented the actual analysis result for Samsung Cheonji-in and KT Naratgeul, two of the most popular mobile Hangul input methods used in Korea.

  • Translation of a Korean text into a braille text causes no problem under the existing Korean braille-code System that maintains I: I correspondence between Korean characters and braille codes. However, reverse translation of a braille text into a Korean text would cause unavoidable mis-translation due to I : N correspondences between braille codes and Korean characters. The analysis shows that in Korean braille-code System, the major reasons for mis-translation are the conflicts between Korean Chosung (initial consonant) letters and numbers, between Korean Jongsung (final consonant) letters and punctuations, between Korean Jongsung (final consonant) letters and English mode delimiter codes, and overlapping use of the same braille code such as opening and closing parentheses. In this paper, we firstly established a reverse translation rule, that is to use an ordinary braille code unless the braille code causes any conflict in braille code sequences. If any ordinary braille code may cause some conflict during the reverse translation, an extended braille code that we propose in this paper must be used. In the experimentation, we cannot get any translation errors with the newly designed braille-code System compared with 25% of errors with the existing braille-code System.

  • Hangul character always consists of consonants-vowel-consonants in order. Using this point, this paper proposes an approach to design a model for spotting each letter in Hangul, and then recognize characters based on the spotting results. The network model consist of a set of HMMs. The letter search is carried out by Viterbi algorithm, while character recognition is performed by searching the lattice of letter hypotheses. Experimental results show that, in spite of simple architecture of recognition, the performance is quite high reaching 87.47% for discrete regular characters. In particular the approach shows highly plausible segmentation of letters in characters.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the processing unit in Korean word.Three experiments were conducted to examine this question.Preliminary experiment and Enperiment I were executed to delineate the processing unit in singles syllable word and Experiment 2,for words two or more syllables. The major finding of the preliminary experiment showed that the effect of the consonant type was not significant but that of the letter position was.Reaction time increased as the position of letter increased. The difference in reaction time between the first and the second position was not significant. However, the difference between the second and third was.In the Experiment 1, the effect of the number of letter was significant: reaction time increased as the number of letters increased. The size of the position effect both in the preliminary experiment and Experiment 1was comparable.Result of Experiment 2 was such that regardless of the presence of the final consonant(s),the reaction time incresased linearly as the number of svllables increased from two to four. The findings of the present study suggest that:(1)processing unit in single syllable Korean words is a syllable without the final consonant(s):(2) but in words of two or more syllables, the unit is likely to be a syllable with the final consonant(s).

  • Growing boy of studies focus on the letter transposition effect since it gives the information on how letters are coded and what variables are involved in the processes of word recognition. This review investigated various models on letter transposition effect. While most proposed models rely mainly on the bottom-up processes, evidences from various studies suggested the necessity of the top-down variables based on the cognitive processing mechanism. Especially, empirical evidences suggested that Hangul model should include a position specific processing mechanism based on onset, vowel, and coda of the Korean character.

  • With the enormous advance of communication technology, telephone numbers to be memorized is increased because most people have a lot of telephone numbers. Thus it needs a method for people to easily memorize those telephone numbers. A traditional method is to use Korean nickname by 4 syllable Korean words such as "Pal -li Pal-li," "Yi- sa Yi-sa" whose initial sounds are corresponding to Korean sounds of telephone numbers. However, this method does not apply to all the telephone numbers, and only apply to a few telephone numbers. This paper proposed a Hangul-phone keyboard (TELNICK) considering the reduction of finger's moving distance and the number of strokes, and the generation of Korean nicknames for easy memorizing. This paper also proposes a method to generate many Korean nicknames that can correspond to 4-digit or 3-digit telephone numbers by using TELNICK keyboard and presents the form of Korean nicknames that can correspond to 7-digit or 8-digit telephone numbers.t telephone numbers.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel recognition model of on-line cursive Korean characters using HMM(Hidden Markov Model) and level building algorithm. The model is constructed as a form of recognition network with HMM for graphemes and Korean combination rules. Though the network is so flexible as to accomodate variability of input patterns, it has a problem of recognition speed caused by 11, 172 search paths. To settle the problem, we modify the level building algorithm to be adapted directly to the Korean combination rules and apply it to the model. The modified algorithm is efficient network search procedure time complexity of which depends on the number of HMMs for each grapheme, not the number of paths in the extensive recognition network. A test with 15, 000 hand written characters shows recognition rat 90% and speed of 0.72 second per character.

  • In this paper we present a Hangul Encryption Algorithm (HEA) which encrypts composition Hangul syllables into composition Hangul syllables using the non-linear structure of Hangul. Since ciphertexts generated by HEA are displayable characters HEA can be used in applications such as Privacy Enhanced mail (PEM) where ciphertexts should be displayable characters. HEA is based on DES and it can be shown that HEA is as safe as DES against the exhaustive key search differential cryptanalysis and linear cryptanalysis. HEA also has randomness of phonemes of ciphertexts and satisfies plaintext-ciphetext avalanche effect and key-ciphertext avalanche effect.
