  • The purpose of this study was to develop an inclusive dental hygiene practice model in an effort to stir up the self-directed learning of learners to boost their problem-solving skills and ability of providing inclusive personal oral health care in a systematic and efficient manner. The subjects in this study were 41 dental hygiene students who were in their second year in C college located in South Jeolla Province as of 2009. An inclusive dental hygiene practice was implemented during a 15-week period of time from August 31 to December 7, 2009, and a self-administered survey was conducted before and after that by using the same questionnaires. Whether there were any differences between before and after the application of the inclusive dental hygiene practice model was checked, and there was improvement in all the learning motivation, self-directed learning capabilities and satisfaction level. Concerning the relationship of academic standing to changes in learning motivation, self-directed learning capabilities and satisfaction level, the inclusive dental hygiene practice model brought more favorable changes to the students in the lower tiers. The inclusive dental hygiene model should be applied to not only practical courses but theoretical ones so that learners could make progress both in theory and practice, and evaluation tools geared toward assessing their academic achievement and practical abilities should be developed.

  • Background: To confirm verbal violence experience in dental hygiene students and to verify its influence on their self-esteem and career identity. Methods: Data were collected using a structured self-reported questionnaire targeting 180 dental hygiene students at M University. Descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance, t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis were performed using SPSS WIN 25.0. Results: Older students reported that they experienced verbal violence more frequently during clinical training, especially those who were dissatisfied with clinical training. The students experienced verbal violence more frequently from dental hygienists than from dentists and patients. Dental hygiene students had high self-esteem and career identity. The students who were majorly satisfied with clinical training had higher self-esteem and career identity than those who were dissatisfied. Dental hygiene students had lower self-esteem and career identity when they experience verbal violence more frequently from dentists and dental hygienists during clinical training and clinical practice. Conclusion: An intervention program needs to be developed to prevent verbal violence against dental hygiene students and a strategy to increase their self-esteem and career identity is required.

  • Background: To investigate the mediating effect of learning flow in the relationship between blended learning achievement and learning satisfaction in dental hygiene students, and to identify whether face-to-face studies should be substituted with non-face-to-face studies. Methods: Total 134 dental hygiene students, who underwent blended learning in the dental hygiene class during the first semester of 2021, were recruited. The research tools were blended learning achievement, learning flow, and learning satisfaction, comprising 15 questions in total. Mediation regression analysis was used to analyze the mediating effect of learning flow in the relationship between learning achievement and learning satisfaction, and that between each variable. Results: Learning flow and learning satisfaction (r=0.490, p<0.001) were positively interrelated, and the interrelation between variables was statistically significant. Class environment had the biggest effect as a subfactor of class achievement, and it appeared to have an effect on class attitude and learning motive. The effect of learning flow on learning satisfaction was statistically significant. Learning flow was partially mediated by both blended learning achievement and learning satisfaction. Learning flow was directly related to blended learning satisfaction and learning achievement. Conclusion: The results showed the possible use of blended learning in dental hygiene theory and practical subjects.

  • Background: This study was aimed at investigating the perception of the requirement of measuring the periodontal pocket depth of the dental hygiene students in the mock national board examination. Methods: SPSS 25.0 (IBM SPSS Statistics) was used to perform the independent t-test for the recognition level of dental hygiene students in the interdisciplinary practical national board examination. A p-value < 0.05 was set to indicate statistical significance. Results: Participants showed a high recognition level for the requirement of measuring the periodontal pocket depth without any difference among disciplines. When periodontal pocket depth measurement was included in the national board examination, the educational and clinical work of dental hygienists was expected to be unified, and the professionalism of dental hygienists was expected to be strengthened. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the feasibility of introducing periodontal pocket depth measurement in the practical national board examination for dental hygienists should be reviewed by a group of experts.

Nursing theories such as metaparadigm, nursing process and human need theory affected theory development as dental hygiene process. Dental hygiene process provides a framework for high quality dental hygiene care. Dental hygiene process include five phases; assessment, dental hygiene diagnosis, dental hygiene planning, implementation, evaluation. Dental hygiene process of care is recognized as standard for dental hygiene education and clinical dental hygiene practice. Dental hygiene practice has moved from auxiliary model to professional model. Critical thinking skill and disposition are necessary to provide evidence-based dental hygiene care using dental hygiene process as clinical process and critical thinking process. Critical thinking, problem solving and evidence-based practice must be integrated into dental hygiene process for quality dental hygiene care.

  • Dental hygienists handle periodontal tissue every day. Since periodontal tissue contains hard and soft tissue, dental hygienists need to cultivate scientific knowledge about bone tissue. This study introduces recent research results on cells and cytokines related to bone tissue. Recently, bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw has been reported, therefore we would like to present osteoporosis and osteoporosis treatment drugs and their side effects in this study.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the convergence factors affecting professional identity perceived by the emotional labor of clinical practice and self-esteem in some dental hygiene students. The questionnaire was conducted in 205 dental hygiene students from 3 university in Jeollanam-do area. The data were analyzed using SPSS 12.0. Professional identity correlated positively with self-esteem(r=0.366, p<0.01), negatively with emotional labor of clinical practice(r=-0.213, p<0.01). The convergence factors influencing professional identity were satisfaction level with majors(${\beta}=0.434$), self-esteem(${\beta}=0.236$) and emotional labor of clinical practice(${\beta}=-0.199$). The regression model explained 34.6% of professional identity. Therefore, to enhance professional identity in dental hygiene students, it is required to program development to improve satisfaction level of with majors, self-esteem and management of emotional labor of clinical practice.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the convergence relationship between the clinical practice stress and professional identity of 171 dental hygiene students from 3 university in Jeollanam-do area. The data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 18.0 program. Professional identity was negatively correlated with clinical practice training environment(r=-0.352, p<0.01), clinical practice work burden(r=-0.185, p<0.05) and conflicts with patients(r=-0.181, p<0.05). The convergence factors influencing professional identity were clinical practice training environment(${\beta}=-0.261$), aptitude(${\beta}=0.238$), advice from others(${\beta}=-0.186$) and clinical practice unsatisfied(${\beta}=-0.176$). The regression model explained 23.7% of professional identity. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a program for the smooth labor supply by understanding the relationship between clinical practice stress and professional identity in dental hygiene students.
