This study was conducted to compare the general composition and immunomodulatory activity of breast and thigh meats from four lines of Korean native chickens: Yeonsan Ogye, Hyunin Black, Hwangbong, and Hoengseong Yakdak. White Leghorn was used as a control. Fifteen male chickens (three chickens in each line) were grown under the same conditions and slaughtered at 13 weeks old. The four lines of Korean native chickens, regardless of the part, had higher contents of crude fat (p<0.05) than White Leghorn. The cholesterol contents were significantly higher in Hyunin Black and significantly lower in Hoengseong Yakdak than those of other chickens (p<0.05). The immunomodulatory effect, assessed by macrophage cell proliferation and nitric oxide production, was only observed in the breast meat of the four lines of Korean native chickens. The phagocytic activity of macrophage cells was significantly augmented by the breast meat of Hyunin Black and Hoengseong Yakdak. Furthermore, the mRNA expressions of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-4, IL-10 and $IFN-{\gamma}$, was significantly suppressed by Korean native chickens compared with White Leghorn. These results suggested that the four lines of Korean native chickens exhibited greater immune-enhancing activity than White Leghorn.
This experiment was conducted to examine the effective DNA related with muscle growth of Korean native chicken. cDNA library was constructed with mRNA subtraction from Korean native chicken to Cornish. Total mRNA was purified from pectoralis muscle of adult chicken. Five clones were compared their DNA sequence and characteristics based on GenBank. Clone NDS-1 (618nt) was low homology (10%) with other species, but it is closely related with triosephosphate isomerase which is play an important role in glycolysis. Clone NDS-6 (651nt) is corresponding to glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase. These two clones are encoding to enzymes in key role in glycolysis. However, other three clones (NDS-2, NDS-10, NDS-12) have low homology with other species about 5.0%. These clones were not similar with any other eukaryotics. Therefore, three clones (NDS-2, NDS-10, NDS-12) are high possibility of specific DNA for muscle growth in Korean native chicken.
This study aims to organize the pharmacological component of native chicken(NC) by analyzing the bill presented in traditional medicine NC relevant literature. And the analyze the heterogeneity and the common prescription of chicken that a variety of traditional technologies to existing treatment books private data to organize information about the scientific verification. After the analysis by building a DB and want a prescription to traditional book, herbal medicine usability throughout the assessment of the special treatment provided the basis for further product and a variety of functional food development. In addition, the continued expansion of the country and future growth engine industry related businesses through added value of cultural knowledge resources. NC of the relevant search and information system for prescription knowledge. so standardized, conceptualization, formalization is to build a knowledge of traditional medicine NC recipe DB assess the usefulness of medical literature through interdisciplinary research systems to suggest practical ways of alternative medicine and functional food development.

This study aimed to investigate the changes in production performance of five strains of Korean native chickens (KNCs), which have been collected and established at the National Institute of Animal Science, Korea, since 1992. A total of 38,026 KNCs were tested and survival rate, body weight, age at first egg-laying, hen-housed egg production, and egg weight was analyzed. The mean survival rates of KNCs were $87.9{\pm}0.8%$, but no significant difference in survival rate between strains and in the annual survival rates of KNCs was observed. The average body weight of KNCs was $1,609.7{\pm}21.3g$ at 150 d. The average body weight of KNC-Black was the highest, whereas KNC-White had the lowest weight. A gradual increase in the annual weight change has been observed in almost all strains after 2004. The average age at first egg-laying was $146.9{\pm}1.1d$ in KNCs where KNC-White was the earliest and KNC-Black was the latest. The age at first egg-laying has increased after 2003, but has gradually decreased after 2008. The average hen-housed egg production at 270 d was $77.3{\pm}1.7$ in KNCs, wherein KNC-Yellowish brown was the highest and KNC-Black was the lowest. The average egg weight at 270 d was $51.2{\pm}0.3g$ in KNCs, indicating that KNC-Black was the heaviest, whereas KNC-White was the lightest. A significant increase in annual egg weight has been observed since 2008. To conclude, the appearance and feather colors of KNCs have improved uniformly, and the body weight has also improved slightly since 2002.

Korean native chicken (KNC) is classified as five lines (grey, black, red, white, brown) based on the plumage colors. The KNC has superior meat quality and flavor compared with those of the commercial broilers, which can be explained by the high arachidonic acid contents. The current study was conducted to investigate arachidonic acid contents in five lines of KNC and used for the development of commercial KNC. Breast and thigh muscles from 597 F1 KNC birds were used in this study and linoleic (precursor of the arachidonic acid) and arachidonic acid contents were measured by the standard protocol. In addition, heritabilities and genetic correlations were estimated. As the results, arachidonic acid contents were significantly different among the KNC lines. Also, relatively high heritabilities (0.414~0.570) for arachidonic acid contents were estimated in both breast and thigh muscles. The estimated genetic correlation was negative between linoleic and arachidonic acids. This study indicated that selection of KNC is possible for improving meat flavor in relation to the arachidonic acid. Also, this study can be used for making breeding plans for commercial KNC in the future.
A feeding trial was conducted to investigate the performance of various Korean Native Chickens (KNC) for 64 weeks. Eight hundreds and ten KNC one-day birds were arranged to three strains, Dark Brown(D), Light Brown(L) and Black(B). Each strain had three replicates of 90 birds a replicate. Birds fed same diet with Korean standard feeding. Data were obtained growing performance to 20 week of age and laying performance from twenty one to sixty four week. During the growing stage from hatch to 20 week of age, there were not significant difference to three strains on viability, body weight and feed intake. L strain tended to be earlier 50% egg production day than that of other strains, but was not significantly different. Egg production of L strain was the highest of strains. It showed significantly higher egg production compared to that of D strain(P<0.05), but was not statistically different from that of B strain. Laying peak period was between 28 to 32 week of age in all strains, Egg weight was heavier in D strain(P<0.05). Feed intake was the same as 105g, and feed conversion improved in L strain(P<0.05). There were not difference on interior egg and eggshell quality by strains although eggshell thickness improved slightly in D strain. Fertility of D strain was the highest compared to others(P<0.05) regardless laying stages. Hatchability was not influenced by strains at 39 weeks old, but was significantly higher in B strain at 62 week of age(P< 0.05). The results of this experiment indicated that KNC 3 strains were not effect on egg production, feed intake and feed conversion ratio.
