Though numerous Korean plants were described by $L{\acute{e}}veill{\acute{e}}$, there has been no comprehensive taxonomic examination of those taxa. The taxonomic literature has been thoroughly reexamined to determine the taxonomic status of $L{\acute{e}}veill{\acute{e}'s}$ taxa reported in serial papers of the Decades plantarum novarum using plant specimens from Korea. It was confirmed that $L{\acute{e}}veill{\acute{e}}$ described a total of 275 Korean taxa including a new genus, Hydrolirion $H. L{\acute{e}}v.$, which is now merged into the genus Blyxa Noronha ex Thou. Among 231 of the taxa described as species, 17 are currently recognized as species or varieties. The taxonomic status of 52 taxa were proved disputable as species. There were also 11 taxa which have never been a subject of discussion among Korean taxonomists.
A new taxon, Hymenophyllum wrightii f. serratum C.S. Lee & K. Lee (Hymenophyllaceae), forma nov. was collected and described from forests in Mt. Halla, Jeju-do, Korea. This taxon, H. wrightii f. serratum C.S. Lee & K. Lee (vernacular name: 'Gu-reum-cheo-nyeo-i-kki') was distinguished from H. wrightii f. wrightii by having smaller leaves, broader basal part of leaf blade, broad-ovate laminae, larger sori and serrate margins of lips of involucres. The new taxon's name is based on serrate margin shape of the lips. A Korean name, 'Gu-reum-cheo-nyeo-i-kki', was newly given based on its habitat. Descriptions and its photograph in the habitat are provided along with a key to the species of Hymenophyllum from Korea.
To confirm the taxonomic identity of taxa described by $L{\acute{e}}veill{\acute{e}}$, H. H. A, a French plant taxonomist, in the serial papers of Decades plantarum novarum based on the collections of Fathers Faurie and Taquet from the Korean peninsula, we examined the numerous references that contained taxonomic opinions about $L{\acute{e}}veill{\acute{e}}^{\prime}s$ taxa. Among them, 146 taxa were confirmed as conspecific with other existing taxa. Of them, 79 taxa, including Ajuga devestita, were listed as a synonym of only one species. Sixty-seven taxa, including Bidens robertianifolia, were listed as synonyms of two or more species according to taxonomists. Eight taxa, including Aconitum coreanum, were considered illegitimate names because of later homonym, or other problems. Five taxa, including Rhododendron hallaisanense, were treated either as distinct or conspecific taxa depending on taxonomists.
Here we described and illustrated two new taxa of Allium (Alliaceae) from southern part of Korea. One new species, A koreanum H. J. Choi et B. U. Oh was clearly distinguished from A. splendens of sect. Reticulato-bulbosa by larger and stellately spreading pale pink perianth, apparently exsert filaments, and conical stigma as well as chromosome number. Another new variety, A. thunbergii var. teretifolium H.J. Choi et B.U. Oh was also easily distinguished from its relatives, var. thunbergii and var. deltoides by terete and hollow leaf blade. Keys to the two species of Allium sect. Reticulato-bulbosa and the three varieties of A. thunbergii (sect. Sacculiferum) in Korea were described.
Starch gel electrophoretic studies using 24 populations of five Korean Orostachys species were conducted to investigate allozyme variation and to test hypotheses of systematic relationships among species. The resulting phenogram showed that the populations of five Korean Orostachys species were divided into two major groups. And they were concordant with molecular and morphological data in suggesting that Orostachys was divided into two groups corresponding to the subsect. Appendiculatae and subsect. Orostachys. The low genetic identities among Korean Orostachys species indicated that the species of Orostachys have diverged gradually through the model of geographical species. Comparing the previous genetic data from the species with similar life history and mode of reproduction, most of Korean Orostachys species revealed a significant low genetic variation, while the widespread O. japonicus showed a relatively high genetic variation among the Korean species. This kind of genetic variation pattern might be the results of the isolated habitats, limited numbers of individuals within the populations, destruction of habitats, inbreeding and asexual reproduction in Korean Orostachys populations. The Jungdongjin population (POP 21) of O. malocophyllus was genetically unrelated with remaining populations of the same species, and this interpretation was consistent to the results from the previous palynological and morphological studies. Our allozyme data supported the taxonomic treatment of recently proposed taxa, O. iwarenge (Makino) Hara for. magnus and O. margaritifolius.
In this study, samples were collected from the Sumummulbangdui wetland at the Halla Mountain in Jeju Island in order to isolate novel bacterial strain. Bacterial strains belonging to the class Alphaproteobacteria, and Gammaproteobacteria were isolated after spreading samples onto solid agar media. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of the strains assigned to the two classes were compared to those of type strains of the species. The strains that showed less than 98.7% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the validly published species were considered to be novel species candidates. A total of 19 strains were regarded as novel strains which can be regarded as novel species candidates. In the Alphaproteobacteria, 6 novel strains were affiliated with the genera Novosphingobium, and Rhizobium. A total of 13 novel strains belong to Gammaproteobacteria that assigned to the family Moraxellaceae, Pseudomonadaceae, and Enterobacteriaceae were identified. Cultural, physiological, chemotaxonomic characteristics and fatty acids compositions have been determined for the novel species candidates, and the characteristics are described in this study.
The genus Pseudostellaria (Caryophyllaceae) in Korea was investigated in order to clarify the taxonomic positions and scientific names among the species in this genus based on morphological characteristics. P. ${\times}$ bohyeonsanensis and P. ${\times}$ seoraksanensis share several characteristics (trichome on the sepal margin and midvein, five petals, and stem reclining to the ground after flowering) with P. davidii. P. ${\times}$ bohyeonsanensis, resulting from natural hybridization of P. davidii and P. okamotoi var. longipedicellata, has sterile fruit and a long pedicel (2.2-6.0 cm). P. ${\times}$ seoraksanensis, a natural hybrid of P. davidii and P. palibiniana var. palibiniana, has sterile fruit and a short pedicel (1.1-1.8 cm). P. okamotoi var. longipedicellata shares several characteristics (long pedicels of chasmogamic flowers that elongate to the ground when bearing fruit and cleistogamic flowers with a long pedicel) with the related taxa P. okamotoi var. okamotoi. P. okamotoi var. longipedicellata has slender root tubers, glabrous pedicels, and 5-9 petals. P. palibiniana var. gageodoensis is described from Gageodo Island. It is similar to P. palibiniana var. palibiniana having chasmogamic flowers at the stem terminal, 5-7 petals, and a short pedicel, but P. palibiniana var. gageodoensis is distinguished by 1-2 rows of trichomes on the pedicel, a large sepal size, a large petal size, and a branched stem at its base. P. ${\times}$ biseulsanensis, from a natural hybrid of P. heterophylla and P. okamotoi var. longipedicellata, has a solitary aerial stem, a chasmogamic flower at the stem terminal, a shallow marginate or bitten petal apex, one row of trichomes on the pedicel, and sterile fruit. P. ${\times}$ segeolsanensis, from a natural hybrid of P. palibiniana var. palibiniana and P. okamotoi var. okamotoi, is described from Segeolsan Mt. It has numerous aerial stems, a chasmogamic flower at the stem terminal, 1-2 rows of trichomes on the pedicel, and fertile fruit. Consequently, the genus Pseudostellaria in Korea has been classified into eight species, four hybrids, two varieties, and five forms.
