  • Water quality and ecological environment in the Han River estuary was analyzed using the longterm water quality monitoring data from National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) and the existing data collected in this area. Based on the salinity distribution and changes of current direction in the lower Han River and its estuary, boundaries of the estuary were identified and also, distribution patterns of the phyto- and zooplankton, benthos, ichthyoplankton and fish were discussed related with the salinity changes in the macrotidal subestuary of Han River. Seasonal and spatial distribution of salinity suggested that the direct impact of freshwater be limited to the Incheon North Harbour all the year round and even extended to the southern area of Gyunggi Bay near Palmi island during limited time, usually in summer. Upper limit of salt water intrusion through the Han River is likely to be Singok underwater dam located Gimpo, Gyunggi Province, and normally limited to much lower part of the river, Jeonryuri, Gimpo. Biological boundaries of the Han River estuary exceeded the physical boundaries based on the salinity distribution. Many estuarine species in plankton and fish were found at the totally freshwater or saltwater depending on the seasons and tidal cycles. Some estuarine ichthyoplanktons showed extremely limited distributions in the estuary whereas adult fish revealed wide ranges of salinity adaptation. Critical environmental issues in the Han River estuary and its drainage basin are likely to be 1) pressure on development-promoted district for new town in the drainage area of the estuary, 2) reduction of tidal flat by reclamation, 3) pollutant input through river from municipal sewages and industrial wastes, and 4) ecological barrier between river and terrestrial systems by the military wire fence and riverside road.

  • Estuary is unique habitat ground under substantial changes of water quality, river side, bed material, and micro topography. Construction of SinGok underwater weir with excessive dredging for downstream of weir has changed hydraulic conditions of Han River. This study investigates spatial changes of estuary and expansion process of vegetation on sandbar for JangHang estuary in Han River through analysis of physical and ecological characteristics. As a result of investigation, we found that area of sandbar in JangHang estuary is expanded six times compared between 1985 and 2006, and area of Phragmites australis is gradually decreased while area of Salix subfragilis Anderson. is increased. Also the analysis result of soil layer shows that the Jang-Hang wetlands are created by effect from river, and woody plants are settled from middle part of wetlands, then spread to upper and lower part of wetlands.

  • This study, conducted in Geolpo-dong and Gamjeong-dong near Gimpo-Hangang New Town, examines an area adjacent to the Han River estuary, a major wintering ground for migratory birds. Over 59 surveys from October 2015 to March 2022 in four representative rice fields (sites A-D) recorded 44,942 individuals from 32 genera and 72 species. Site D, a large area near the Han River, exhibited high species diversity. Despite lower diversity in areas under development (sites A, B, C), ongoing species influx and utilization persist. The study focuses on Anser fabalis, a species predominantly utilizing rice fields, and identified their distribution characteristics. The analysis revealed 162 instances of population influx, with over a 30-fold increase observed across 39 surveys conducted over a 30-month period (October to March, '15~'22). The area, a key wintering site for migratory birds of Janghang Wetland, about 5 km from feeding sites, is heavily utilized by migratory geese, indicating the region's high value considering migration distance and anticipated continuous bird influx despite urban expansion. Therefore, future developments should preserve ecological corridors and connected stepping stone habitats to not only preserve existing habitats but to secure alternative feeding sites, ensuring smooth movements and mitigating habitat loss.

  • Peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) are listed as endangered species and Natural monument #323 in Korea, and this study examined the possibility of extinct of peregrine falcon in Jang Hang wetland near Han river using with the application of Population Viability Analysis (PVA) technique. In Jang Hang wetland areas population was monitored during 1999-2005 averaging 10.8 individuals and PVA analysis was done for the 5 years (2015-2020) using the average population size. Using the initial population was estimated 20% of extinct rate during the time. This estimation was quite low considering water pollution and loss of habitat. Also PVA only used population size lacking in other life history information. Nonetheless falcon population can be in risk of extinction if the current construction of crossovers in the river, cement bank are maintained. Long term information regarding life history needs essential.
