Effects of Self-Explanation and Prompts Depend on the Students' Need for Cognition (인지욕구와 자기설명이 학습 수행에 미치는 영향)

  • 자기설명이 학습을 촉진시키려면 무엇을 설명해야 하는지 판단해야 하고, 그에 대해 적절한 설명을 산출해내어야 한다. 본 연구에서는 촉진자극(propmpt)를 제공해서 무엇을 설명해야 하는지에 대해 도움을 주면 자기설명 효과가 얻어지는지 알아보았다. 또한 자기설명과 촉진 자극의 효과가 학습자의 인지욕구(need for cognition)와 상호작용하는지 알아보기 위해 인지욕구 수준을 상하로 나누어 3 요인 실험을 실시하였다. 촉진자극과 자기설명의 효과는 과제와 학습자의 인지욕구 수준에 따라 다르게 나타났다. 기억검사에서는 인지욕구가 낮은 학습자에게서만, 자기설명의 효과와 촉진자극의 효과가 관찰되었다. 반면에 이해검사에서는 인지욕구의주효과가 유의하였고, 3 요인상호작용 효과가 경향을 보였다. 즉 촉진 자극을 제공하는 것은 인지욕구가 높은 학습자에게서만 학습을 향상시켰다. 이 결과는 인지부하가 학습에 영향을 미치는 것으로 해석되었다.

Testing for Learning: The Forward and Backward Effect of Testing (학습을 위한 시험: 시험의 전방효과와 후방효과)

  • Although testing is usually done for purposes of assessment, previous research over the past 100 years indicates that testing is an effective tool for learning. Testing or retrieval practice of previously studied materials can enhance learning of that previously studied information and/or learning of subsequently presented new information. The former is referred to as the backward effect of testing whereas the latter is referred to as the forward effect of testing. Thus far, however, the literature has not isolated these two effects and most previous research focused on the backward effect. Only recent laboratory research provided evidence that there is a forward effect of testing. The present study provides a review of research on this forward and backward effect of testing, focusing on testing procedures of the effects, empirical evidence, current theoretical explanations, and issues to resolve in order to make use of testing effect in educational settings. The reviews clearly show that testing enhances memory of previously learned information by working as memory modifier and learning of newly presented information by affecting learners' metacognition, implying that testing is not just an assessment of learning, but also an effective tool for learning.

The impact of the transient information effect on multimedia learning efficiency (멀티미디어 학습에서 일시적 정보효과가 학습효율성에 미치는 영향)

  • The transient information effect occurs when long and complex transient information disappear before the learner has time to adequately process it or link it with new information. This study aimed to explore the impact of the transient information effect on multimedia learning efficiency within the cognitive load perspective and how segmentation and pacing of instructional materials interact with the transient information effect. The results revealed that the visualonly instruction(a diagram with long and complex texts) was more efficient than the audiovisual instruction(a diagram with long and complex spoken texts). The overall results suggested that using long and complex spoken texts with a diagram can have a negative impact on learning unless the transient information effect are reduced through segmentation and learner-paced instructions.

Metacognitive Awareness, Preference, and Use of Effective Learning Strategies in Korean Undergraduates (대학생의 학습전략 효과성 인지, 선호 및 활용)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate Korean undergraduate students' metacognitive awareness and preference of effective learning strategies. To achieve this goal, a scenario-based survey was conducted focusing on the metacognitive awareness, preference, and use of seven effective learning strategies (modality effect, static-media presentations, absence of extraneous details, testing, distributed learning, interleaved learning, generation) that were empirically supported. This study also aimed to explore the relationships between grade point average (GPA), metacognitive self-regulation, and the aforementioned variables to investigate which students know about, prefer, and use effective learning strategies. The majority of students were unknowledgeable about four of the seven strategies (modality effect, static-media presentations, absence of extraneous details, interleaved learning). Only half of the students were correctly aware of effectiveness of the two strategies (testing, generation). Moreover, students showed low preference for effective learning strategies. GPA did not show a significant correlation with metacognitive awareness and preference of effective learning strategies; however, it showed a significant positive correlation with the use of effective learning strategies. Only for a few learning strategies, metacognitive self-regulation showed a positive correlation with metacognitive awareness, preference, and/or their use. This study suggests that it is important to teach effective learning strategies to undergraduates with a specific direction of instruction. In addition, this study distinguishes metacognitive awareness from preference, suggesting that these two may reflect different constructs.

Analysis on Learning Effects of the Education Program Applying the Team-based Learning Method for Building Construction (팀 기반 학습을 이용한 건축시공 교육의 학습효과 및 만족도 분석)

  • This study aims to quantitatively analyze impacts of the team-based learning (TBL) method on learning of architectural engineering students. A TBL-based education program, consisted of preparation, readiness assurance, and application phases, was proposed by considering characteristics of architectural engineering education in South Korea and was applied in building construction classes. In order to measure learning effects and satisfaction levels of the proposed TBL-based education program, a set of questionnaires was conducted with students who took the building construction classes. As the results, learning effects and satisfaction levels of the TBL-based approach were higher than those of traditional approaches. Individual and team readiness assurance tests in the readiness assurance phase were the most effective and satisfactory items, while assessment in the application phase was the least effective and satisfactory item.

죽어있는e러닝, 살아있는e러닝

  • e러닝은 기존의 오프라인 교육의 보완 수단을 뛰어넘어, 새로운 학습 패러다임을 형성하며 학습자에게 새로운 학습의 기회를 제공해 주고 있는 것은 분명하다. 하지만 e러닝은 기업에서 직원들의 훈련을 좀 더 경제적, 효과적으로 실시하기 위해 먼저 도입하기 시작했기 때문에 e러닝을 통해 학습 활동이 이뤄졌을 때 학습효과가 얼마나 월등하게 있는지에 대한 검증은 아직 이뤄지지 않은 시점이다. 또한 현재 이뤄지고 있는 e러닝은 학습자에 맞는 살아 움직이는 학습이 아닌 일방적으로 이미 정해져 있는 자료를 단순히 전달해 주는 훈련(e-training) 위주로 이뤄지고 있어 오히려 학습자들의 학습효과와 흥미를 떨어뜨리고 있는게 안타까운 현실이다.이에 필자는 살아 움직이는 진정한 e러닝 되기 위한 전략에 대해 애기하고자 한다

  • 연구의 목적은 이러닝 학습환경에서 학습자들의 학습 참여를 촉진할 수 있는 시각적 스캐폴딩을 개발하고 그것이 학습참여, 개별학습, 팀프로젝트학습에 미치는 교육적 효과를 분석하고자 한다. 시각적 스캐폴딩에는 개별 참여도, 팀 참여도, 팀활동에 대한 개인 기여도, 팀간 상호작용 정도가 표상되도록 설계하였다. 시각적 스캐폴딩의 교육적 효과는 실험연구를 통해 분석되었다. 연구결과 이 연구를 통해 개발된 시각적 스캐폴딩은 학습참여도 및 학습성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 분석되었다.

The Development of Level-Differentiated WBI Program on Weather and Climate Unit and the Analysis of Its Effects in Earth Science Class (일기와 기후 단원의 웹 기반 수준별 학습자료 개발 및 효과 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the level-defferentiated Web Based Instruction(WBI) program, to examine its effects on the science achievement self-directed learning characteristics, and the students’ perceptions on the WBI learning. For this purpose, the advanced and complementary WBI program of level-differentiated curriculum was developed to adapt to class fields and examine instruction facilitating efficiency. Designed and developed the WBI program make it possible to teach students according to the level-differentiated learning for the chapter, ‘weather and climate’ in high school science curriculum. The results of this study are as follows: First, level-differentiated WBI was effective to encourage self-concept, learning eagerness, future-oriented self-apprehension, creativity, self-assessment of the student’s self-directed teaming characteristics. There was no interaction effect of treatment and students’ learning ability at the self-directed learning characteristics. Second, the scores of science achievement of WBI group were significantly higher than those of conventional lecture group. There was interaction effect of treatment and students’ learning ability. However level-differentiated WBI has no effect on openness, initiative, responsibility of the student’s self-directed learning characteristics. There was interaction effect of treatment and students’ learning ability at the science achievement, Third, in the perception questionnaire of WBI teaming, many students showed the WBI teaming was good in terms of causing interaction between learners and web based learning materials including various images and animations. However there are several students who showed learning difficulties. For example they wonder which part is more important and what order is proper to study in hypertext environment.

  • 다중 에이전트 학습이란 다중 에이전트 환경에서 에이전트간의 조정을 위한 행동전략을 학습하는 것을 말한다. 본 논문에서는 에이전트간의 통신이 불가능한 다중 에이전트 환경에서 각 에이전트들이 서로 독립적으로 대표적인 강화학습법인 Q학습을 전개함으로써 서로 효과적으로 협조할 수 있는 행동전략을 학습하려고 한다. 하지만 단일 에이전트 경우에 비해 보다 큰 상태-행동 공간을 갖는 다중 에이전트환경에서는 강화학습을 통해 효과적으로 최적의 행동 전략에 도달하기 어렵다는 문제점이 있다. 이 문제에 대한 기존의 접근방법은 크게 모듈화 방법과 일반화 방법이 제안되었으나 모두 나름의 제한을 가지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 대표적인 다중 에이전트 학습 문제의 예로서 먹이와 사냥꾼 문제(Prey and Hunters Problem)를 소개하고 이 문제영역을 통해 이와 같은 강화학습의 문제점을 살펴보고, 해결책으로 신경망 SOM을 이용한 일반화 방법인 QSOM 학습법을 제안한다. 이 방법은 기존의 일반화 방법과는 달리 군집화 기능을 제공하는 신경망 SOM을 이용함으로써 명확한 다수의 훈련 예가 없어도 효과적으로 이전에 경험하지 못했던 상태-행동들에 대한 Q값을 예측하고 이용할 수 있다는 장점이 있다. 또한 본 논문에서는 실험을 통해 QSOM 학습법의 일반화 효과와 성능을 평가하였다.
