  • Recently, the need for research into environmental and intrapsychic variables to promote active career preparation behavior is increasing, due to the increasing need to cultivate career preparation behavior starting from middle school. On the basis of this need, the purpose of this study is to identify the mediating effects of hope in the relationship between maternal learning involvement and career preparation behavior among middle school students. We surveyed 320 middle school students in W city, Gangwon-do, regarding these variables. We evaluated the results according to Baron and Kenny's (1986) mediating effect test procedure. The findings showed a significant positive correlation between positive maternal learning involvement, such as respecting their children's learning methods and providing academic information and advice, and the students' career preparation behavior and hope. However, the findings didn't show any significant correlation between negative maternal learning involvement, such as pressure for academic performance, and the students' career preparation and hope. Furthermore, hope was found to partially mediate the relationship between maternal positive learning involvement, including academic information and advice, and career preparation behavior, while fully mediating the relationship between career preparation behavior and respecting the students' learning methods. However, it did not have any mediating effect on the relationship between pressure for academic performance and career preparation behavior. These results highlight the important role that instilling hope in students, through respecting their learning methods and advising and providing the necessary academic information, plays in achieving a higher level of career preparation behavior.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of parental educational involvement and mathematical attitude perceived by students on math motivation and math anxiety. The results showed that parents' educational involvement had effect on students' motivation to learn mathematics and had a significant effect on mathematics anxiety. In addition, the parents 'mathematical attitude has a significant effect on the motivation of the students, and the higher the mathematical attitude of the parents, the lower the mathematics anxiety of the students but the higher the students' mathematics anxiety. This suggests that even if the parents are educated, the parents can influence their motivation to learn mathematics, rather the more the achievement pressure becomes, the higher the educational involvement. In addition, the parents' mathematical attitude is independent of the degree of educational involvement, and parents can expect to increase their motivation to learn mathematics by nurturing with positive and positive perceptions and attitudes. In order to do this, it is a time when parents' education for the recognition of parents' right mathematics courses and their interest in education and the role of education are positively required.

  • It has been known that the tool characteristics embedded in physical tools and virtual tools act with different underlying mechanisms in a user's knowledge acquisition and conceptual understanding. This overview study examines the learning process through the use of physical and virtual tools from the perspective of conceptual frameworks, affordability that tools present, and the depth of cognitive engagement that occurs in the process of learning concepts through various learning activities. Based on the conceptual frameworks, the results of previous comparative studies were reinterpreted. It was found that what mattered for learning is the amount of new information that a tool provides and the different level of cognitive engagement that students use through various learning activities. Finally, the implications to be considered when teachers use physical and virtual tools to help students better understand various concepts are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between socioeconomic status, maternal involvement in learning, parenting behavior and children's self-determination motivation. The participants of this study consisted of 333 fifth- and sixth-grade elementary school children and their mothers living in Seoul. The results of this study indicated that mothers with a higher educational attainment reported greater autonomy support behavior and involvement in their offspring's learning. Conversely, mothers with low incomes were found to use psychological control and were also found to be involved in learning to a lesser degree. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that children whose mothers were less involved in learning showed higher levels of self-determination motivation. Additionally, maternal support for autonomy and psychological control had a number of moderating effects on the association between maternal involvement in learning and the child's self-determination motivation. Specifically, children tended to exhibit significantly lower levels of self-determination motivation when mothers were more involved in learning among those who received less support in terms of autonomy. Conversely, children had significantly higher levels of self-determination motivation when mothers were less involved in learning when it came to those children who were under less psychological control.

  • After rapid eye movement(REM) sleep was idenified in 1953, a lively interest developed concerning a possible role of this kind of sleep in memory processes. The author reviewed studies relating REM to memory/learning. Many studies in animals and humans gave substantial evidence for relating REM sleep to memory function. The evidence supporting the position taken in this paper comes from experiments showing that : (1) learning session is followed by the significant augmentation of REM sleep : (2) REM sleep deprivation, prior to learning or immediately thereafter, impairs the formation of a permanent memory/learning : (3) there is a vulnerable period of time(eg, REM sleep "window") following succussful learning, during which REM sleep deprivation results in memory impairment : (4) theta rhythm which develops during REM sleep induces long-term potentiation in hippocampus : (5) there are some evidences providing the relationship of neurotransmitter systems to the maintenance of REM sleep and memory storage processes.

  • Rewards or penalties become informative only when contingent on an immediately preceding response. Our goal was to determine if the brain responds differently to motivational events depending on whether they provide feedback with the contingencies effective for learning. Event-related fMRI data were obtained from 22 volunteers performing a visuomotor categorical task. In learning-condition trials, participants learned by trial and error to make left or right responses to letter cues (16 consonants). Monetary rewards (+500) or penalties (-500) were given as feedback (learning feedback). In random-condition trials, cues (4 vowels) appeared right or left of the display center, and participants were instructed to respond with the appropriate hand. However, rewards or penalties (random feedback) were given randomly (50/50%) regardless of the correctness of response. Feedback-associated BOLD responses were analyzed with ANOVA [trial type (learning vs. random) x feedback type (reward vs. penalty)] using SPM8 (voxel-wise FWE p < .001). The right caudate nucleus and right cerebellum showed activation, whereas the left parahippocampus and other regions as the default mode network showed deactivation, both greater for learning trials than random trials. Activations associated with reward feedback did not differ between the two trial types for any brain region. For penalty, both learning-penalty and random-penalty enhanced activity in the left insular cortex, but not the right. The left insula, however, as well as the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and dorsomedial prefrontal cortex/dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, showed much greater responses for learning-penalty than for random-penalty. These findings suggest that learning-penalty plays a critical role in learning, unlike rewards or random-penalty, probably not only due to its evoking of aversive emotional responses, but also because of error-detection processing, either of which might lead to changes in planning or strategy.

  • This research is to develop ethical clothes consumption education program that adopts PBL which is student centered professor-learning method where the learner actively participates in lessons to recognize problems and solve them. This research also tried to see the changes in the students' ethical clothes consumption awareness and problem solving skills and self-directed learning ability after applying this program to lessons. With total of four study topic, seven ethical clothes consumption education programs were developed, and the actual lesson was conducted in controlled group and experiment group. Summary of this research is as followed: First, ethical clothes consumption education program was developed using PBL. Second, teenagers' ethical clothes consumption awareness increased much more than before the course. As both the control group and the experiment group were proven to have high ethical clothes consumption involvement and awareness, it was possible to confirm there is a need for systematic and continuous consumption education at school. Third, when a post test on changes in problem solving ability and self-directed learning ability after applying PBL based ethical clothes consumption education program was conducted, students' problem solving ability was enhanced and both factors, the awareness and behavior of self-directed learning, showed significant difference.
