A Case Study on Student's Perspective on Java Applets in Web-based Online Courseware (자바 애플릿(Java Applets)의 교육적 활용에 대한 학습자의 인식 및 태도 : 웹기반수업 사례연구)

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine student's perspective on java applets used in web-based online courseware. undergraduate The subject of study was 94 undergraduates and web-based online courseware for the study was made. A suvey was conducted using a questionnaire form right after the semester was over. The results of this study were as follows; 1. 61.7% of the students answered that java applets used in the web-based courseware was very interesting. 2. For the reason why the students had the feeling of liking on the java applets, 33% of the students checked the item "due to the java applets' characteristics of repetition", and 30.9% of the students checked the item "due to the concrete and dynamic explanation on the contents". 3. The majority of the students answered that the java applets helped their learning(71.3%), induced their academic motivation(67%), and felt interactivity while learning(73.4%). 4. 81.9% of the students felt that java applets was necessary and essential contents in the industrial education web-based online courseware.

  • This research examines current viewpoints on modesty and immodesty in dress from a cross-cultural perspective. The purposes of this study was to explore the concept of modesty and to find out sub-variables of modesty, and the similarities and differences of modesty between two cultures. This qualitative interview study of 58 female college students in America and 36 in Korea examines attitudes about modesty. The data collection was performed in America and Korea simultaneously in Feb. 2004. According to the results of this study, the concept of modesty had 4 sub-variables such as covering up, appropriateness, drawing attention from others, and conservativeness. Both American and Korean students mentioned that time and place are closely related with modesty and that modesty was related with gender. Also cultural differences were existed.

  • In order to make students more interesting in statistics class, a small visual basic program is introduced. This program, which can be executed through the Excel Macro, can immediately collect many individual questionnaire files that were filled up by participatory students and consolidate into one Excel worksheet.

  • The STEAM education was applied to science high school students, and changes in perceptions of students and teachers were investigated after class treatment. By the results of the student's perception survey, very positive results were found in increasing problem-solving capabilities, educational satisfaction, etc. More than 98% of students said they would continue to participate in STEAM education classes. Meanwhile, the lack of time for class activities put a burden on students to complete the problems during class. Especially nanoscience content and activities were properly organized in consideration of the level of cognitive development of the students. In addition, as a result of a survey of teachers' perceptions for students, more than 80.0% of teachers responded very positively in 'self-directed learning ability' and 'problem-solving capability', etc.

A Comparative Study on the Awareness of between Students and Teachers on the Actual Condition of career Guidance at Vocational High Schools (전문계 고교 진로지도 실태에 대한 학생과 교원의 인식 비교 연구)

  • The purpose of this research is to provide basic materials in developing an efficient career guidance method of Vocational High Schools on the basis of analyzing awareness differences in students, teachers and between students and teachers as well as awareness differences according to a position of teachers in terms of the actual condition of career guidance and improvements with the target of students and teachers at Vocational High Schools. The survey was carried out by targeting students and teachers at Vocational High Schools in the Seoul Metropolis. The results of this research are as follows. First, it appeared that the awareness of students on the career guidance level of Vocational High Schools is insufficient, and students answered that employment guidance is more insufficient compared to educational guidance. In addition, the awareness of students on the career guidance conditions appeared to be generally insufficient. Second, in case of awareness of teachers on the career guidance conditions of Vocational High Schools, teachers answered that arrangement of teachers in full charge of career guidance, career counselling room, securing and utilization of latest career information and information search systems capable of using the internet for career guidance are sufficient, whereas they answered that time for career guidance, operating budget of a career counselling room and linkage with external institutions are insufficient. Third, they answered that career guidance conditions are generally sufficient in the order of a principal, vice-principal and teachers. The principal is cognizing that career guidance conditions are sufficient all question items, and the vice-principal answered that career guidance conditions are insufficient in only operating budget of a career counselling room and linkage with external institutions. Teachers answered that career guidance conditions are insufficient in only time for career guidance, operating budget of a career counselling room and linkage with external institutions. In addition, compared to teachers, the principal was cognizing that career guidance conditions are sufficient except operating budget of the career counselling room through analysis of awareness difference among principle, vice-principle and teachers. Fourth, students answered that career guidance conditions are insufficient in all question items, but teachers cognized that career guidance conditions are sufficient in all question items excluding time for career guidance. Among them, what showed a difference of the biggest awareness was analyzed as information search systems capable of using the Internet.

Analysis of High School Students' Understanding Levels about Earth Science terms Written in Chinese Characters (한자로 된 지구과학 용어에 대한 고등학생의 이해 수준)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze high school students' understanding levels about earth science terms written in Chinese characters according to learners' characteristics. In order to investigate how the responses vary according to their characteristics, first of all, proper scientific terms are selected, and then corre sponding questions about them are offered as subjects, which consists of a Korean characters type, a picture type, and a Korean and Chinese characters type. During paper test and interview, the questions are given to fifteen students from general high schools in Jecheon, Chungbuk Province. The results of the study are as follows; Students in formal operation level and field-independency answered very well and also the terms of Chinese characters type and picture type improve the students' understanding and memorization. Generally, Chinese characters have more positive influence on their learning than the negative. Therefore, in general, it seems that it's more effective to explain the sound and meaning of terms in detail and to give learners enough time to draw a picture about each term by themselves when scientific terms are delivered to students in Chinese characters in class.

A Study on a Teacher's and Students' Perceptions of Learning Difficulties of the Chemical Bond Unit of the Chemistry II (화학II 화학결합 단원의 학습 어려움에 대한 학생과 교사의 인식 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore high school teacher's and students' perceptions of learning difficulties of the ‘chemical bond' unit of the Chemistry II in the 7th national curriculum. The participants in this study were consisted of a teacher and his students(85) from the Chemistry II classrooms: they all answered to the questionnaire, and then some students and the teacher were interviewed individually. The results showed that there were big differences between the teacher's and his students' perceptions of 1) the most difficult unit for understanding; 2) concepts they learned; and 3) the most difficult concept for understanding in the classroom. Students thought that electro-negativity unit was the most difficult to understand while teacher thought molecular structure unit was the hardest unit to teach. And teacher taught all 32 subjects of chemical bond unit to students, but some students could not remember they learned all of them. Most difficult parts for students to understand were ‘Coulomb force' and ‘dipole moment', while the most difficult part for the teacher to teach was ‘the conceptual difference between atomic bond and intermolecular force'. The reasons caused the students' learning difficulties were analyzed and discussed based on the interview data, and then further study was presented.

Perceptions about Science and Scientific Activity of Students in Kindergarten and Primary School (유치원과 초등학교 학생의 과학 및 과학활동에 대한 인식)

  • This study has examined 5-year students in the kindergarten and students in the 2nd, 4th, and 6th grade in the primary school to analyze their perceptions about scientists. science, and how they apply science in their daily lives. First, students have 4 stereotypic images on scientists, specifically in 'indoor', 'male', 'lab coat'. and 'scientific instrument'. There were significant differences in stereotypic images on scientists depending on genders and ages. Girls and primary students showed higher scores than boys and kindergarten students did. respectively, in stereotypic images on scientists. No differences were observed for the stereotypic images on scientists among primary students, regardless of their grades. Second, most of students were interested in science. Depending on grades, there were significant differences in their preference for science. Students in higher grades showed lower scores than those in lower grades did. In addition, only a few of them hoped to be a scientist in the future. Boys showed higher scores in their hope to be a scientist in the future than girls did. The students in lower grades showed higher scores than those in higher grades. Third, most of children thought themselves doing activity-oriented science in school. Outside school, however, they did not use the knowledge and skills they had learned for science in school. Students in the primary school showed more concept-oriented perception for science than those in kindergarten did. This perception was gradually increased as the grades of the students go up.

  • 이 논문은 네덜란드의 4학년 학생들에게 시행된 문제 해결 시험에서 얻은 첫 번째 결과이다. 참여한 학생들은 수학에서 높은 성취도를 얻은 학생들이었다. 학생들의 응답을 분석한 결과 성취도가 높은 학생들에게 관심을 가져야 하는 이유를 알게 되었다. 교사는 우수한 학생에 대해서는 걱정할 필요가 없다는 일반적인 믿음을 수정해야 한다는 것이 분명해졌다. 수학에서 높은 성취도를 보인 학생들이 비전형적인 문제에 직면할 때 그들의 능력은 기대했던 것보다 저조하게 나타났다. 이 연구에서 학생들은 특정 문제를 풀 때 여분의 노트에 거의 아무것도 적지 않음을 발견하였다. 또한 학생들이 답을 찾는 과정을 참고 견디지 않는다는 것도 알 수 있었다. 이 논문에서는 시험 문제 중 한 문제의 결과를 논의하면서 이러한 결과를 보여줄 것이다.

Development and Evaluation of Alternative Nutrition Signposting Concepts (알기 쉬운 영양성분 전면표시 시안 개발 및 평가)

  • To promote the adoption of healthier eating patterns, this study was aimed to develop and evaluate alternative front of pack nutrition signposting concepts. Based on previous research, we developed two signposting concepts, Multiple Traffic Light (MTL) and Multiple Traffic Light with % Daily Value (MTL-%DV). The signposts featured three key nutrients, total sugar, saturated fat, and sodium. Actual food packaging with no front of pack signposting (NoSP) was included in the evaluation to act as a benchmark against which to compare the performance of the different signposting options. Using an interviewer administered method, we assessed the degree of understanding and time to interpret on a total of 534 subjects (194 elementary, 108 middle, and 103 high schoolers, 128 adults). In the individual product evaluations, MTL (87.0%) obtained the highest level of correct responses, followed by MTL-%DV (83.1%) and NoSP (52.2%). Except for signposting concepts, age, gender and living area were not associated with the degree of correct responses in multivariate analyses. When used to compare products with different colors of nutrient contents, correct responses were more than 90% for MTL-%DV (91.5%) and MTL (90.3%). The middle and high schoolers revealed the lower likelihood of correct response compared to the other two groups. In case of comparing products with same colors of nutrient contents, the proportion of correct responses was the highest in NoSP (90%), followed by MTL%DV (77.4%) and MTL (48.5%). In terms of time to interpret, MTL-%DV and MTL performed better than NoSP in the individual product evaluation and the comparison of two products with different colors of nutrient contents. NoSP performed the best in the comparison of two products with same colors of nutrient contents. A majority of the participants preferred MTL-%DV (78%) most and thought it the most useful in helping them make healthier food choices. Based on these findings, MTL-%DV was considered to most closely meet the objectives of the initiatives.
