An Analysis of Systems Thinking Revealed in Middle School Astronomy Classes: The Case of Science Teachers' Teaching Practices for the Unit of Stars and Universe (중학교 과학 천문 수업에서 나타나는 시스템 사고 분석: 별과 우주 단원에 대한 과학 교사의 교수 실행 사례)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze system thinking revealed in science teachers' teaching practices of middle school astronomy classes. Astronomy lessons were video-taped from four eighth grade science teachers. The video recordings were all transcribed and analyzed by employing a framework for systems thinking analysis after modifying an existing frame of hierarchial structure used in relevant previous studies. In addition, four participants were interviewed in order to uncover their orientation toward teaching using video stimulated recall method. Findings are as follows: All participating teachers were not able to employ the four levels of system thinking appropriately and only utilized the low level of systems thinking. They also demonstrated teacher-centered practices for employing system thinking despite their student-centered orientation toward teaching. The main reason for these results may be that teachers focused more on spatial thinking, than on system thinking as well as the lack of teacher's knowledge about the content and formative assessment of non-earth science teachers. Implications on how to effectively employ the system thinking in astronomy class are discussed in this paper.

Practitioners' Perception of Landscape Education in Universities (대학 조경교육에 대한 현장 실무자 인식 조사)

  • This study investigates the practitioners' perception of Landscape Education in the universities in order to satisfy the demands of the rapidly changing industry. The survey was conducted for 257 practitioners to analyze the overall perception of Landscape Education, the importance and utilization of each course in universities, and the importance and utilization of each landscape process step. The overall perception of Landscape Education was slightly negative, and more practical education was demanded to improve the students' adaptability on the job. Practitioners suggested that universities should teach more practical expertise and related fields. They re-educated deficient aspects such as practical skills, computer techniques and legislational knowledge through the new employee training. The survey also showed that professors should be most responsible for a better education; however, students and practitioners have to endeavor together. According to the findings, planting design, landscape design, landscape materials, landscape planning and landscape construction as well as management were important. They are also considered as practical courses. However, practitioners perceived that university education was not sufficient for the constructional process. This means that Landscape Education in the universities has been more focused on planning and design. Because the universities are essentially for the research and study, changing the curriculum as practitioners suggested is not necessary. Nevertheless, it suggests for more practical education and balanced curriculum including construction and management that should be seriously considered. This study was focused on the practitioners' perception. Many of the respondents were from Seoul metropolitan area, therefore, it's hard to generalize the findings. A further study should be considered that would include instructors as well as students.

Structural Relationship among Personal Characteristics, Perception and Use Intention of Natural Burial (개인 특성별 자연장 인식과 이용의도 간의 구조적 관계)

  • Although the recent interest in and favor for natural burial has increased, there are still few who choose it as a funeral. The purpose of the study is to supply necessary information to promote the choice of natural burial. For this a survey of 430 students and residents was conducted in Daejeon. The result of the research is as follows. First, there is a significant difference in use intention of natural burial by age and religion. People under the age of 30 and Catholic believers recorded the highest score in use intention of natural burial. Second, there was a significant difference in information on natural burial by age or religion, in religion and philosophy by age, in physical environment by sex or age, and in conservation by sex or age. In general, the lower the age, the higher the positive perception of natural burial was. While females had a more positive perception of physical environment than males, males had a more positive perception of conservation than females. All sub factors of the perception of natural burial such as information on natural burial, funeral style, religion and philosophy, physical environment and conservation had a significant and positive effect on its use intention. However, ratio skew showed that religion and philosophy had the strongest effect on use intention of natural burial, followed by funeral style, physical environment, conservation, and information on natural burial.

Study on the Physique Status and Eating Disorder Behavior among High School Students in Daejeon (대전시에 거주하는 남ㆍ녀 고등학생의 체격지수 평가 및 섭식 장애 행동 분석)

  • We investigated the prevalence of eating disorder risk group and its relationship with Physique status and eating behavior among high school students in Daejeon. In May - June 2002, 350 students were sampled from 6 high schools in Daejeon by multi-stage cluster sampling and assessed with self-completing questionnaires. We used the Korean version of Eating Attitude test(EAT-26) to screen eating disorder risk group. and other instruments to screen physique status and eating behavior. The response rate was 91%(total 320) and numbers of female students were 167(52.2%) and male students were 153(47.8%). Average age was 16.0${\pm}$0.35 years, and average body-mass index(BMI) and PIBW(Percent Ideal Body Weight) were 20.9${\pm}$3.3 Kg/m2 and 102${\pm}$4.2% in male students, 20.2${\pm}$3.7 Kg/m2 and 98${\pm}$7.2% in female students(p<0.0001). Over 50% of the subjects were dissatisfied with their body shape; the degree of dissatisfaction with body shape was higher in those who believed themselves to be fat. Mean score of EAT-26 was higher in female students (10.78${\pm}$7.36) than male students(6.07${\pm}$4.39)(p<0.0001). The prevalence of high risk eating disorder group was 2.6% in male students, 11.4% in female students(p<0.0001). Eating behavior was better in female students than male(p<0.0001). Eating behavior was significantly higher in eating disorder risk group in both sex. Therefore eating disorder symptomatology was highly prevalent among high school students in Daejeon. And this symptomatology has a more close relationship with physique status and eating behavior in female students.

The Meaning on Social Work Practicum that College Students Have Experienced (전문대학생이 체험한 사회복지실습의 의미 탐색)

  • This study shows the meaning on context of social work practicum that college students have experienced. It reveals to find a essence of social work practicum based on college students through free variation. They met a "high barrier" from the beginning of social work practicum. There were "confused boundary of role as well as work". "Dilemma" has been accessed, so they felt various emotions for social work and social worker to be able to exist. "Various practice place" meant to continue as a multi-player with a weak appearance and confront for time as who he/she is. This was connected to whole life time for individually. Disclosure was as below. identity as a social worker(to be) was consisted beyond interaction between student and supervisor. Organization of social work practicum was considered when they had taken a part in. Gap must find out to be disappeared between ideal things and real things about social work practicum. Ideal type of college education for social work as well as whole education for all were needed.

The Environmental-Friendly Clothing Consumption Behavior of Middle and High School Students in Seoul (서울지역 중.고등학생의 환경친화적 의복 소비행동)

  • The goal of this research is to determine the variables which influence adolescents' environmental-friendly clothing consumption behaviors. A questionnaire was prepared to survey 768 students in 8 different middle and high schools throughout Seoul. The results of the studies are as follows; First, the experiences in environmental activities were higher than the average. Second, the level of environmental-friendly values was found to be higher than the average. Among the values, environmental-preservation scored the highest, whereas selfishness scored the lowest. Third, adolescents have the strongest desire to express their individuality by means of clothing, which includes comfortableness, price, fashion, and brand. Fourth, the environmental-friendly clothing consumption awareness was average. In this field's subcategory, disposal awareness was above the average. But when buying clothes, the awareness of environmental problems was lower than the common level. Fifth, adolescents were lower in environmental-friendly clothing consumption behavior than the common level. In the subcategory, using behavior and disposal behavior were on the average, but buying behavior was executed in an anti-eco-friendly manner. Sixth, adolescents' price pursuit and clothing disposal consciousness were important factors of environmental-friendly clothing consumption behavior.

Content analysis of the way university students appreciate the meaning of life (대학생이 인식하는 삶의 의미에 대한 내용분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the way university students appreciate the meaning of life. The subjects were 1, 2, 3, and 4 grade students from four universities located in Gyeonggido and Gangwondo Provinces; This study was a descriptive research project conducted from March to June 2015 for the purpose of understanding how university students appreciate the meaning of life. The data, gathered from interviews with a number of university students, who are at the last stage of adolescence, were classified into 102 statements and 30 categories through a series of content analyses of certain subjects, such as the definition and importance of the meaning of life, the endeavor to make life meaningful, the moments they feel the meaning of life, and the methods they adopt to feel the meaning of life. We analyzed the ways in which university students appreciate the meaning of life. We hope this study will provide a small guide for them so that the meaning of their lives can be enriched and their feeling of well-being enhanced. In addition, it is necessary to develop appropriate measures for college students to deal with crises in their life and, thus, the results of this study could be used as an important material for the systematic development of support programs for college students. Finally, this study will provide the basis for multifaceted interventions designed to improve the physical and mental health of college students and help them to adapt to college life.

Prediction of VO2max Using Submaximal PACER in Obese Middle School Boys (최대하 PACER 검사를 통한 비만 남자 중학생의 VO2max 추정)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the equation of $\dot{V}O_{2max}$ by $sub_{max}imal$ PACER method for obese middle school boys. For this, $_{max}$imal test using Bruce protocol in lab was performed and then PACER $_{max}imal$ test with portable $\dot{V}O_{2max}$ equipment. To decide the level of submaximal test, during PACER with portable equipment, we found the section in which target hreat rate(over 75%$HR_{max}$) and then per section(75%,80%,85%,90%,95%) metabolic responses were recorded, with which we analyzed multiple regression by stepwise method. Model 1(at 90%$HR_{max}$): $\dot{V}O_{2max}$(ml/kg/min) = 142.721-0.275(repetition)-0.48(HR)+0.177(weight)-1.536(age)[%error 3.90ml/kg/min; performance until 2 stage(13 repetition)]. Model 2(at 95%$HR_{max}$): $\dot{V}O_{2max}$(ml/kg/min) = 182.851-0.103(repetition)-0.744(HR)+0.186(weight)-0.324(age)[%error 4.51ml/kg/min; performance until 3 stage(25 repetitions)]. estimated $\dot{V}O_{2max}$ from Model 1 was different about $3.25{\pm}6.32ml/kg/min$(%error=6.84%), otherwise model 2 was $3.16{\pm}4.54ml/kg/min$(%error=5.75%). considering %HRmax, as the submaximal test model 1 might be fit more than model 2 for obese middle school boys.

Quality Characteristics of Ginger Tea (생강차의 품질특성)

  • To evaluate the quality of commercial ginger tea, we compared physicochemical (sugar content, pH, acidity, color, viscosity, transparancy) and sensory (7-point scoring test, 18 experienced panel members) characteristics of commercial ginger tea with home-made one. Additionally, we assessed the opinion of Food and Nutrition specialists, about commercial ginger tea. Questionaires were hand delivered to 530 subjects consisted of University students and faculties of Department of Food and Nutrition at 8 cities (Seoul, Incheon, Youngin, Taejon, Chungju, Taegu, Kwangju, Pusan) in Korea and the complete data of 328 subjects were statistically analyzed using SPSS Program for Window (mean, ANOVA, $\chi$$^2$). The questionaires were consisted of sociodemographics, frequency and occasion of purchasing, opinion of quality and improvement points. Commercial ginger tea was lower in transparancy, Hunter color (L and b value) and viscosity than home-made one. However, commercial tea was not significantly different in sugar content, pH, acidity and Hunter color a value compared to home-made one. Also, among sensory attributes, over-all preference and flavor, sweetness were not significantly different between commercial and home - made one, However, scores of color, taste and pungency of home-made ginger tea were significantly higher than commercial one (p<0.05). Factors to be improved for commercial ginger tea were in the order of ginger content (28.6%), flavor (25.2%) and sweetness (24.5%).

Quality Characteristics of Sujongkwa (수정과의 품질특성)

  • To assess the quality of commercial Sujongkwa, we compared physicochemical and sensory characteristics of commercial Sujongkwa with home-made one. Two different brands of Sujongkwa and home-made one were analyzed for physicochemical (sugar content, pH, acidity, color, viscosity, transparency) and sensory characteristics (7-point scoring test, 15 experienced panel members). Separately, we assessed the opinion of food and nutrition specialists about the commercial Sujongkwa. Questionnaires were hand delivered to 530 subjects consisted of university students and faculties of Department of Food and Nutrition at 8 cities (Seoul, Incheon, Yongin, Daejon, Chungju, Daegu, Kwangju, Busan) in Korea and the complete data of 328 subjects were statistically analyzed using SPSS Propam for Window (mean, ANOVA, $\chi$$^2$). The questionnaires were consisted of sociodemographics, frequency and occasion of purchasing, opinion of quality and improvement points. Both commercial Sujongkwas were lower in sugar content, transparency, color(L and b value) and viscosity, and commercial brand B was higher in pH and color a value than home-made one. Also, among sensory characteristics, over-all preference and color for brand B were significantly higher than those for brand A and home-made one (p<0.05). Especially, the scores of over-all preference were 1.9 for brand A, 5.7 for brand B, and 4.9 for home-made Sujongkwa. Points to be improved for commercial Sujongkwa were in order of sweetness (33.0%), pungency (24.2%), dried persimmon (19.1%).
