The purpose of this study is to identify reading effect of e-book versus printed book. For this purpose, 8 elementary school students participated in the reading project. The participants of this project read 'A'(printed book) and 'B'(e-book) literary works and were tested reading comprehension. According to conclusion of the study, there is no difference between printed book and e-book on reading effect. It is expected that this result can be used for e-library management and reading education.

Some of the possible effects of revitalizing school libraries are improved personality education and an acquisition of the basic, as well as cultural, knowledge through expanded reading opportunities. The goal of school education is to increase the students' intellectual quality by providing structured education curriculums. In order to meet this goal, there has been increased interest in ways to enhance academic achievements or to increase the cognitive level of the students. In this study, we focused on the effects of school libraries on learning capabilities. To measure the learning capabilities, we used academic achievements as the evaluation criteria. Based on the statistical analysis, we found that the collection types and the reasons for using school libraries influenced the academic achievements more than the frequency of using school libraries. However, the influences of economic and social factors were too great in comparison to other factors. This paradoxically shows the importance of public education and the school libraries' role in education in general. In summary, school libraries should provide good quality reading experiences as well as methods to collect, manage, and use information to the students. These efforts will positively impact the academic achievements of the students.

Because the educational significance of reading activities for growing children is so great, the importance of reading cannot be overemphasized. While the reading volume of elementary school students in Korea is very high, as they go up to middle school, the reading volume falls rapidly. This study examined a more effective way to resolve this middle school reduction in reading volume. Middle school freshmen were surveyed on their reading habits and preferences in the sixth grade of elementary school, after which the groups were divided into two groups based on their averages; groups with high/low reading habits and groups with high/low reading preferences). Participants also wrote reading reports for six weeks, kept a record of the days of the week they read for more than 20 minutes, and noted down the time they read in minutes. It was found that 75% of participants did not read one book a week when in the sixth grade of elementary school and it was confirmed that reading many books and liking to read were elements that had different dimensions. For example, about 35% of the participants said they liked books but rarely read them. It was also confirmed that the reading habits formed in elementary school were a strong variable that affected the number of days that and the reading time of middle school students rather than the reading preferences formed in elementary school. This study concluded that a subjective attitude toward reading and actually reading were completely different problems, which suggested that 'habits' could have a greater influence than 'preferences' when performing tasks to achieve goals.

This system can perform efficient administration in a searching, lending and returning books. And also with this system, many styles of reading education is possible by considering properties of Elementary School. Using the system teachers and children can exchange a information about books or reading together. We organized the system to aid teachers in administration and assistance to children by joining the admittance of use, and to manage a library efficiently in consideration of understanding one another and several conditions in use of library. Besides, children can be appraised their reading process, so with the result that they will be a good reader.

The purpose of this study is (a)to identify reading effect on the imagination, and (b)to compare reading effect with audio-visual materials. For these purposes, 25 elementary school students and 11 university students participated in the reading project. The participants of this project painted a car and a beast after reading a book and watching a movie, Main findings and conclusions made in this study are summarised as follows : (1)Reading is better than a movie for the people's imagination. (2)Children can imagine much more freely than the adults. It is expected that these results can be used for the children's reading education and programs.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the perception of the school libraries from the teachers who work for the school libraries in rural area. Data were collected by survey and interview. The results shows that the role of school libraries is the place of reading instruction and leisure. Students can expand their experience for social life through using information media. Also, it is emphasized that the school libraries in the rural area should have the role of cultural place with local residents. Finally, the study provides several programs: flexible library scheduling, academic achievement programs, liberal art programs, and cultural place programs.

The study aims to explore 'reading promotion projects' led by the Korean Education Office and to ponder meaning of the projects, and then to propose the future directions for the projects. To achieve the purpose, the study selected to analyze a reading promotion project called as "Ulsan Students' Reading Day~" by Ulsan MetropolitanCity Office of Education as a case and sample for the study. The study was designed to use two research methods and phases to explore the project in detail: documentary research and survey method. First, the study collected and analyzed the literatures and contents related to the projects but focused on examining progresses of the project such as situations from the introduction stage to the settlement stage. Second, the study conducted survey to collect data from teachers and students who have experienced the project in elementary, middle and high schools. The detailed contents of questionnaires contain current states of the project in each school, assessment of the project, and requirements for the project. The study found that the project resulted in positive influence to students' reading skills and education. In spite of these positive results, it is necessary to develop altenatives to solve some limts in the current states of the project. Reading promotion projects, in long run, need to have profeissional staffs with responsbility for managing the projects, to improve environments for reading promotion, and to encourage students' voluntary participation to the projects.

The standards for instructional media and equipments imply an essential element for curriculum. In knowledge-based society, school libraries are an educational environment to assist curriculum, offer information literacy and reading services. Therefore the standards for school libraries instructional media and equipments are able to suggest the mission of school library media center, and it should contain suitable elements for educational roles. But the current standards are insufficient from quantitatively as well as qualitatively. The purpose of this study is to propose criteria for selecting picture books as various reading education materials for middle school students and to check whether it can be applied to book selection. First, identified the educational value of picture books as reading materials and the criteria for selecting picture books by academic field through previous studies. After integrating the commonalities of various picture book selection criteria presented in previous studies by categorizing them into illustrations, text, and other categories. And it devised selection criteria that can be applied after selecting middle school students as readers. Based on the unified picture book selection criteria, a survey was conducted to ask in-service librarians about the main criteria to consider when selecting picture books for middle school students, and intensive interviews were conducted with experts who have experience in picture book education. As a result, the picture book selection criteria from previous studies were revised and supplemented with two criteria related to text, four criteria related to pictures, and five other criteria, and presented as picture book selection criteria for middle school students. To verify the practicality of the picture book selection criteria, it checked the applicability of each category of criteria to picture books recommended by the Children's Book Research Society (ages 13 and older). Out of 22 picture books for middle school students, 15 books could be applied to all categories of the selection criteria, showing significant practicality.

This study is conducted in order to find out 1) if a digital storytelling activity can enhance children's attitudes on reading and writing, and 2) if there is any difference between cooperative and individual digital storytelling groups in their attitudes. For this Purpose, 29 4th graders in an elementary school in Seoul participated as subjects. The findings of this study showed that digital storytelling improved their reading and writing attitudes. However, there was no significant difference in attitudes between the cooperative and individual digital storytelling groups. This study has demonstrated that digital storytelling is a good way of enhancing children's reading and writing attitudes. This study represents a preliminary effort to empirically examine the effectiveness of digital storytelling on reading education.
