In steel frames, the analysis and design techniques are based on either idealized fixed or pinned connections. In this case, it has the advantage that the structural analysis and the design procedure were simplified, but there could be given different results of analysis between the real steel frame connections and the idealized fixed and pinned connection. This is because the real connections would be analyzed by semi-rigid, and have some transfer of moment and rotational constraint about the loads. In this study, structural analysis program with considered connections that have joint rigidity of fixed, pinned and semi-rigid, was developed. Then, the effects of joint rigidity on strength and displacement. in steel frames subjected to lateral forces and axial forces, were investigate, and the results were compared with those of the Midas Gen. w program.

This study proposes a wearable master device that can measure the joint stiffness and the angular displacement of a human operator to enhance the adapting capability of a slave system. A lightweight inertial sensor and the exoskeleton mechanism of the master device can make an operator feel comfortable, and artificial pneumatic muscles having a working principle similar to that of human muscles improve the performance of the slave device on emulating what a human operator does. Experimental results revealed that the proposed master/slave system based on the muscle stiffness sensor yielded uniform tracking performance compared with a conventional position-feedback controller when the payload applied to the slave system changed.
This paper dealt with multi-scale natural frequency characteristics of wavy CNT (carbon nanotube) reinforced composites by applying the Mori-Tanaka method, rule of mixture, and Halpin-Tsai equation. By compelling benefit of an ad-hoc Eshelby tensor, the load-transfer characteristics of CNT with a waviness implanted in the polymer matrix was determined. The numerical results obtained are in good agreement with those reported by other investigators. Furthermore, the new results reported in this paper show the interactions between CNT weight, waviness ratios and layup sequences of laminated composites. Key observation points are discussed and significant considerations are given in practical designing of CNT reinforced composites.
In this investigation, results of laboratory tests on four reinforced concrete flat plate interior connections with elongated rectangular column support which has been used widely in tall residential buildings are presented. The purpose of this study is to evaluate an effect of column aspect ratio (${\beta}_c={c_1}/{c_2}$=side length ratio of column section in the direction of lateral loading $(c_1)$ to the direction of perpendicular to $c_1$) on the hysteretic behavior under earthquake type loading. The aspect ratio of column section was taken as $0.5{\sim}3\;(c_1/c_2=1/2,\;1/1,\;2/1,\;3/1)$ and the column perimeter was held constant at 1200mm in order to achieve nominal vertical shear strength $(V_c)$ uniformly. Other design parameters such as flexural reinforcement ratio $(\rho)$ of the slab and concrete strength$(f_{ck})$ was kept constant as ${\rho}=1.0%$ and $f_{ck}=40MPa$, respectively. Gravity shear load $(V_g)$ was applied by 30 percent of nominal vertical shear strength $(0.3V_o)$ of the specimen. Experimental observations on punching failure pattern, peak lateral-load and story drift ratio at punching failure, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation in the hysteresis loop, and steel and concrete strain distributions near the column support were examined and discussed in accordance with different column aspect ratio. Eccentric shear stress model of ACI 318-05 was evaluated with experimental results. A fraction of transferring moment by shear and flexure in the design code was analyzed based on the test results.

Segment lining applied to the TBM tunnel is mainly made of concrete, and it requires sufficient structural capacity to resist loads received during the construction and also after the completion. When segment lining is design to the Limit State Design, both Ultimate Limit State (ULS) and Service Limit State (SLS) should be met for the possible load cases that covers both permanent and temporary load cases - such as load applied by TBM. When design segment lining, it is important to check structural capacity at the joints as both temporary and permanent loads are always transferred through the segment joints, and sometimes the load applied to the joint is high enough to damage the segment - so called bursting failure. According to the various design guides from UK (PAS 8810, 2016), compression stress at the joint surface can generate bursting failure of the segment. This is normally from the TBM's jacking force applied at the circumferential joint, and the lining's hoop thrust generated from the permanent loads applied at the radial joint. Therefore, precast concrete segment lining's joints shall be designed to have sufficient structural capacity to resist bursting stresses generated by the TBM's jacking force and by the hoop thrust. In this study, bursting stress at the segment joints are calculated, and the joint's structural capacity was assessed using Leonhardt (1964) and FEM analysis for three different design cases. For those three analysis cases, hoop thrust at the radial joint was calculated with the application of the most widely used limit state design codes Eurocode and AASHTO LRFD (2017). For the circumferential joints bursting design, an assumed TBM jack force was used with considering of the construction tolerance of the segments and the eccentricity of the jack's position. The analysis results show reinforcement is needed as joint bursting stresses exceeds the allowable tensile strength of concrete. This highlights that joint bursting check shall be considered as a mandatory design item in the limit state design of the segment lining.

CFT column has a lot of structural advantages due to the composite behavior between in-filled concrete and steel tube. This paper deals with the development of an effective numerical model which can consider the bond-slip behavior between both components of concrete matrix and steel tube without taking double nodes. Since the applied axial load to in-filled concrete matrix is delivered to steel tube by the confinement effect and the friction, the governing equation related to the slip behavior can be constructed on the basis of the force equilibrium and the compatability conditions. In advance, the force and displacement relations between adjacent two nodes make it possible to express the slip behavior with the concrete nodes only. This model results in significant savings in the numerical modeling of CFT columns to take into account the effect of bond-slip. Finally, correlation studies between numerical results and experimental data are conducted to verifying the efficiency of the introduced numerical model.
The axial compressive strength, relative 3-D stability and osteoconductive shape design of an intervertebral fusion cage are important biomechanical factors for successful intervertebral fusion. Changes in the stress distribution of the vertebral end plate and in cage stability due to changes in the spike shape of a newly contrived box-shaped fusion cage are investigated. In this investigation, the initial contact of the cage's spikes with the end plate and the penetration of the cage's spikes into the end plate are considered. The finite element analysis is conducted to study the effects of the cage's spike height, tip width and angle on the stress distribution of the vertebral end plate, and the micromigration of the cage in the A-P direction. The stress distribution in the end plate is examined when a normal load of 1700N is applied to the vertebra after inserting 2 cages. The micromigration of the cage is examined when a pull out load of l00N is applied in the A-P direction. The analysis results reveal that the spike tip width significantly influences the stress concentration in the end plate, but the spike height and angle do not significantly influence the stress distribution in the end plate touching the cage's spikes. In addition, the analysis results show that the micromigration of the cage can be reduced by adjusting the spike angle and spike arrangement in the A-P direction. This study proposes the optimal shape of an intervertebral fusion cage, which promotes bone fusion, reduces the stress concentration in a vertebral end plate, and increases mechanical stability.

Bridges are designed and constructed as infrastructures in order to overcome topographical obstructions for fast and smooth transfer of human/material resources. Therefore the shape and size of piers constructed along the longitudinal bridge axis should be restricted by topographical conditions. Action forces of connections and piers are affected by pier shapes and sizes together with connection arrangement which decides load carrying path under earthquakes. In this study a typical bridge is modelled with steel bearings and reinforced concrete piers and seismic analyses are performed with analysis models with different arrangement of steel bearings and piers. From analysis results ductile failure mechanisms for all analysis models are checked based on strength/action force ratios of steel bearings and pier columns. In this way the influences of arrangement of connections and piers on the earthquake resistant capacity of typical bridges are figured out in view of forming ductile failure mechanism.
This paper presents the study of the bending behavior of mooring chain links for keeping the position of the offshore floating structures. In general, chain links have been thought as the axial members due to the fundamental boundary condition. But, the flexural stiffness can be induced to the contact surface between chain links when friction occurs at the surface of the chain links due to high tensile force. Especially, the mooring chains for offshore floating platforms are highly tensioned. If the floater suffers rotational motion and the mooring chain links are highly tensioned, the rotation between contact links, induced by the floater rotation, generates the bending moment and relevant stresses due to the unexpected bending stiffness. In 2005, the mooring chain links for the Girassol Buoy Platform were failed after just 5 months after facility installation, and the accident investigation research concluded the chain failure was mainly caused by the fatigue due to the unexpected bending stress fluctuation. This study investigates the pattern of the induced bending stiffness and stresses of the highly tensioned chain links by nonlinear finite element analysis.

Recently, most of residential-commercial buildings and apartment houses which are being constructed in the downtown area mainly adopt hybrid structural systems to compose various spaces. Especially, column-supported wall system which is one of the hybrid systems includes shear wall and rigid frame structure and these structures are connected by the transfer floor. But this system is very disadvantageous from the viewpoint of structural safety and is difficult to find out the stress distribution at the transfer floor. Therefore, this study analyzes the behavior and stress distribution according to the shear wall layout of transfer girder system subject to vertical and static lateral loads. Also, this study recognizes load paths and stress concentration based on the analysis results nearby the transfer floor and presents guidelines for the effective design of wall and transfer girder.
