  • In this study, the fiber blending ratio and strain rate effect on the tensile behavior of hybrid fiber reinforced cement composite was evaluated. Hooked steel fiber and polyvinyl alcohol fiber were used for reinforcing fiber. The fiber blending ratio of HSF+PVA were 1.5+0.5, 1.0+1.0 and 0.5+1.5vol.%. As a results, the tensile strength, strain capacity and fracture toughness of the hooked steel fiber reinforced cement composites were improved by the increase of the bond strength of the fiber and the matrix according to increase of strain rate. However, the tensile stress sharply decreased after the peak stress because of the decrease in the number of straightened pull-out fibers by micro cracks in the matrix around hooked steel fiber. On the other hand, PVA fiber showed cut-off fracture at strain rate $10^{-6}/s$ with multiple cracks. However, at the strain rate $10^1/s$, the multiple cracks and strain capacity were decreased because of the pull-out fracture of PVA fiber. The HSF1.5PVA0.5 shown the highest tensile strength because the PVA fiber suppressed the micro cracks in the matrix around the hooked steel fiber and improved the pull-out resistance of hooked steel fiber. Thus, DIF of strain capacity and fracture toughness of HSF1.5PVA were greatly improved. In addition, the synergistic response of fracture toughness was positive because the tensile stress was slowly decreased after the peak stress by improvement of the pull-out resistance of hooked steel fiber at strain rate $10^1/s$.

  • 12 concrete blocks, on which hybrid fibrous sheets (carbon fiber and glass fiber) had been bonded, were subjected to tensile load in order to estimate properties of the bonded interface. the sheet length was varied by 100mm, 200mm and 400mm. It was found that more than 150mm bond length is required to achieve the maximum bearing capacity of the interface. In this study, maximum bond stress $\tau_{F,max}$, ultimate slip $S_{FU}$ of the interface were estimated $\tau_{F,max}$=3.0MPa and $S_{FU}$= 0.175mm, respectively.

  • In this study, performance of fiber-reinforced polymer-modified mortar was studied for the development of eco-friendly materials for high performance repair and reinforcement. The general cement mortar and eco-friendly UM resin was mixed with a certain percentage for increased durability. To increase the strength of the polymer-modified mortar, PVA fiber, steel fiber and hybrid fiber were added at a constant rate. Hybrid fiber is contains the same percentage of PVA fiber and steel fiber. In order to determine the strength properties of fiber-reinforced polymer-modified mortar, the compressive strength test, the splitting tensile strength test and the flexural strength test were performed. And, in order to determine the durability properties of fiber-reinforced polymer-modified mortar, water absorption test and chemical resistance test were performed. From the experimental results, polymer-modified mortar using UM resin was improved durability. And the tensile strength and flexural strength increased, which were the vulnerability of fiber reinforced polymer-modified mortar. From this study, fiber-reinforced polymer-modified mortar using eco-friendly UM resin can be used to repair and reinforcement for the external exposure of concrete structures to improve the durability.

  • This paper investigates the lap splice performance of structural steel bars embedded in high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composite(HPFRCC) with various matrix ductilities. Matrix ductility is governed fiber type and fiber volume fraction. Fiber types were polypropylene(PP), polyethylene(PE) and hybrid fiber[polyethylene fiber+steel cord(PE+SC)]. The lap splice length$(l_d)$ was calculated according to the relevant ACI code requirements for reinforcing bars in normal concrete. As the result of tests, lap splice strength of HPFRCC using PE1.5 and hybrid fiber increased by up to $82{\sim}91$ percent more than that of concrete. Splice strength and energy absorption capacity of PE0.75+SC0.75 or PE1.5(fiber volume fraction 1.5%) specimen increased more than that of PP2.0(fiber volume fraction 2.0%) specimen. Therefore lap splice performance depends on fiber tensile strength and Young's modulus more than fiber volume fraction. Also, HPFRCC appear multiple crack and ductile postpeak behavior due to bridging of fiber in cementitious composite.

  • The permeability of concrete affects largely on the durability of concrete, therefore it is required that the correct assessment and improvement of permeability. Therefore it is rational method that the permeability of concrete structures is estimated in the common use states under loading than in the early sound conditions. In this study, to improve the permeable efficiency of concrete, some kinds of fiber and resin are mixed in making of concrete specimens. And also, for the reasonable assessment of permeability, after 50% and 70% pre-loadings of its compressive strength were acted on the specimens, the tests were executed. From the results of this study, in the case of 50% pre-loading coefficients of permeability were increased about 1.4times against the nonpre-loading specimens and in the case of 70% pre-loading they were increased about 17.8times. And it turned out that hybrid steel fiber reinforcement is most effective for the improvement of permeable efficiency of concrete.

  • The objective of the current study is to evaluate the effects depending on the types of reinforcing fibers being influential in view of mechanical properties and impact resistance of hybrid fiber reinforced concrete (HFRC) for applications to precast concrete structure. Hybrid fibers applied therefor were three types such as PP/MSF (polypropylene fiber+macro synthetic fiber), PVA/MAF (polyvinyl alcohol fiber+MSF) and JUTE/MSF (natural jute fiber+MSF), where the volume fraction of PP, PVA and natural jute was applied with 0.2 %, respectively, while based on 0.05 % volume fraction of MSF. The HFRC was tested for slump, compressive strength, flexural strength and impact resistance. The test result demonstrated that mixture of such hybrid fibers improve compressive strength, flexural strength and impact resistance of concrete. Moreover, it was found that HFRCs to which hydrophilic fibers, i.e. PVA/MSF and JUTE/MSF, were mixed show more improved features that HFRC to which non-hydrophilic fiber, i.e. PP/MSF was mixed. Meanwhile, the finding that PVA/MSF HFRC exhibited better performance than JUTE/MSF HFRC was attributed from the former having higher aspect ratio than that of the latter.

  • Generally, normal concrete has the disadvantages of low tensile strength, low ductility and volume instability. To improve its performance, fiber reinforced cimentitious composite(FRCC) have been development. These composites are composed of cement, sand, water, a small amount of admixtures, and an optimal amount of fiber like synthetic fiber and steel fiber. This research investigates influence of sand, hybrid fiber and fiber volume fraction, and reports the test results of mechanical properties, fracture behavior and failure pattern of the FRCC. Our experiment was observed that sand mixed FRCC has lower compressive strength and higher bending strength than no sand mixed FRCC, and more steel fiber mixed FRCC has higher compressive strength and bending strength. Hybrid FRCC of steel and polypropylene had superior properties than FRCC of polypropylene only in same fiber volume fraction.

  • In this study, the fiber blending ratio and strain rate effect on the tensile properties synergy effect of hybrid fiber reinforced cement composite was evaluated. Hooked steel fiber(HSF) and smooth steel fiber(SSF) were used for reinforcing fiber. The fiber blending ratio of HSF+SSF were 1.5+0.5, 1.0+1.0 and 0.5+1.5vol.%. As a results, in the cement composite(HSF2.0) reinforced with HSF, as the strain rate increases, the tensile stress sharply decreased after the peak stress because of the decrease in the number of straightened pull-out fibers by increase of micro cracks in the matrix around HSF. When 0.5 vol.% of SSF was mixed, the micro cracks was effectively controlled at the static rate, but it was not effective in controlling micro cracks and improving the pull-out resistance of HSF at the high rate. On the other hand, the specimen(HSF1.0SSF1.0) in which 1.0vol.% HSF and 1.0vol.% SSF were mixed, each fibers controls against micro and macro cracks, and SSF improves the pull-out resistance of HSF effectively. Thus, the fiber blending effect of the strain capacity and energy absorption capacity was significantly increased at the high rate, and it showed the highest dynamic increase factor of the tensile strength, strain capacity and peak toughness. On the other hand, the incorporation of 1.5 vol.% SSF increases the number of fibers in the matrix and improves the pull-out resistance of HSF, resulting in the highest fiber blending effect of tensile strength and softening toughness. But as a low volume fraction of HSF which controlling macro crack, it was not effective for synergy of strain capacity and peak toughness.

  • In construction industries, new construction materials are needed to overcome some problems associated with the use of conventional construction materials due to the change of environmental and social requirements. Accordingly, the requirements to be satisfied in the design of civil engineering structures are diversified. As a new construction material in the civil engineering industries, fiber reinforced polymeric plastic (FRP) has a superior corrosion resistance, high specific strength/stiffness, etc. Therefore, such properties can be used to mitigate the problems associated with the use of conventional construction materials. Nowadays, new types of bridge piers and marine piles are being studied for new construction. They are usually made of concrete filled fiber reinforced polymeric plastic tubes (CFFT). In this paper, a new type of FRP-concrete composite pile which is composed of reinforced concrete filled FRP tube (RCFFT) is proposed to improve compressive strength as well as flexural strength. The load carrying capacity of proposed RCFFT compression member is discussed based on the result of experimental and analytical investigations.
