  • The fatigue test of the fillet weldments were executed with different groove angles and porosity. The groove angles of $90^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ and $55^{\circ}$ were compared with fatigue lives. After the fillet weldment failure, the porosity which found at the fractured surface were observed to account the effect on fatigue life. Finite element analysis were performed to correlate the fatigue strength and the size & the location of porosity. The stress-strain field were severely affected by the length of notch and the size & location of porosity. Based on the quantitative analysis of porosity effect, the total volume of porosity was key factor for fatigue strength of the fillet weldment.

  • In this study, fatigue strength of load-carrying cruciform fillet welded joints were evaluated using a new method proposed by Yamada, for geometric or structural stress in welded joint, that is, one-millimeter stress below the surface in the direction corresponding to the expected crack path. Validity of the method is verified by analyzing fatigue test results for load-carrying cruciform welded specimens has different size of weld toe radius, leg length and plate thickness reported in literature. Structural stress concentration factor for 1mm below the surface was calculated by finite element analysis for each specimen respectively. When compared to the basic fatigue resistance curve offered by BS7608, the one-millimeter stress method shows conservative evaluation for load-carrying cruciform fillet welded joints.

  • In this study, fatigue tests to obtain S-N curves and FE analyses to obtain structural stress concentration factors were conducted for the two types of cruciform fillet welded joints, that is, load-carrying and non load-carrying types. Then we changed the obtained S-N curve of load carrying joint to that based on hot spot stress. As a result, the S-N curve of load carrying joint based on hot-spot stress was almost exactly coincided with that of non load-carrying joint based on nominal stress. So we have conducted that the fatigue strength of a welded joint with different geometry from the non stress distribution along the expected crack path.

  • Under cyclic loading, the fatigue failures of welded joints occur at weld toes which induce stress concentration by weld shape. So we need to obtain the peak stress and the S-N curve to assess the fatigue strength of welded joints. However the measurement of peak stress is of high uncertainty and low reproducibility, so we use nominal stress instead in fatigue tests of welded joints. In this study, fatigue tests to obtain S-N curves and FE analyses to obtain stress concentration factors were conducted for the two types of cruciform fillet welded joints, that is, load-carrying and non load-carrying types. Then we changed the obtained S-N curves to that based on peak stress using the hot-spot stress concept. From the analyses of the S-N curves obtained, we have concluded that there is a need to develop a new method to evaluate the fatigue life.

  • Fatigue failure modes of load-carrying cruciform weld joints are dependent on the characteristics of the fatigue crack initiation and propagation from the weld toe or the weld root. In this study, constant amplitude fatigue tests on load-carrying fillet welded specimen carried out, and fatigue strengths were evaluated. Also, an attempt is made to develop a new analytical model with more accuracy to predict the fatigue crack propagation life of fillet welded cruciform joints of SWS 490B steels containing lack of penetration defects. From the result of this study, fatigue crack growth characteristics of load-carrying fillet welded cruciform joints, containing lack of penetration defects are found to be affected by the weld geometry, stress range and microstructures of the weld zone.

  • In pressurized water reactors (PWRs), the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) upper head contains numerous control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) nozzles. In the last 10 years, the incidences of cracking in alloy 600 CRDM nozzles and their associated welds has increased significantly. Several axial and circumferential cracks have been found in CRDM nozzles in European PWRs and U.S. nuclear power plants. These cracks are caused by primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) and have been shown to be driven by welding residual stresses and operational stresses in the weld region. Therefore, detailed finite-element (FE) simulations for the Korea Nuclear Reactor Pressure Vessel have been conducted in order to predict the magnitudes of the weld residual stresses in the tube materials. In particular, the weld residual stress results are compared in terms for nozzle location, geometry factor$r_o$/t, geometry of fillet, and adjacent nozzle.

  • This paper was composed with fatigue test of the cruciform specimens, as load carrying and non-load carrying type. It also has performed computational analyses for geometric condition of the fillet welding bead. As test results, the effect of stress ratio in the specimen was insignificant. Stress ranges were varied with R=0.1~0.2. The fatigue cracks that were found in the load carrying type specimens and most specimens welded with contact were developed at the end of welds. The fatigue strength of specimen that have fractured in maternal plate was found about ${\Delta}\sigma_c$=63.5MPa. It's about 24% less than that of the non-load carrying type specimens having about ${\Delta}\sigma_c$=83.8MPa. A category of the Fatigue design specifications which provide for cruciform details was defined grade C as a stress of the maternal member. And then, the fatigue strength to be transformed into the maternal stress was found about 78.27 MPa, it tends to be less than that of allowable fatigue strength.

  • The non-destructive Inspection of the fillet weldment has difficulties due to its geometrical complexity and uneasy access. The surface shear horizontal wave (SH-wave), however, has been successfully applied to the detection of cracks on the surface and sub-surface of the filet weldment heel part. The conventional ultrasonic inspection using the surface SH-wave is usually a contact method using piezoelectric transducer. Thus, it is not suitable for a field application because the reliability and repeatability of inspection are significantly affected by test conditions such as couplant, contact pressure and pre-process. In order to overcome this problem, a non-contact SH-wave inspection method using EMAT is propose. The experimental results with this non-contact method are compared with those with a conventional ultrasonic method in fillet weldment with slit type defects. It is shown that the non-contact inspection technique requires simple procedure and less time in the fillet weldment inspection.

  • Fatigure crack growth from surface defects is one of the most important subjects for the evaluation and the assurance of safety in pressure vessels, piping systems, ship hulls and other various structures. This paper attempts to analysis some practical or general problems such as the estimation of crack growth life to penetrate the plate thickness, based on fatigure crack growth from a single surface flaw and the interaction of multiple flaws. An experiment on the coalescence of multiple undercuts was carried out under cyclic tension condition as a attempt to the analysis of multiple crack problems. It is noted that the fracture strength is characterized by the analogy to that in a single crack growth.
