  • The UCA is a standard-based approach to utility communications which provides for wide scale integration of functional areas including customer interface, distribution, transmission, power plant, control center, and corporate information systems. Field devices in the power facilities require real-time communications, and they must be interconnected into fieldbus. This study introduces a method of implementing gateway that interfaces UCA and fieldbus. In this study, PROFIBUS and FOUNDATION Fieldbus are selected as candidate fieldbus protocols. Protocol interface in the gateway can be accomplished by mapping objects and services of UCA and fieldbus. MOst of the UCAs CASM objects and services are directly mapped into those of the application and user layers of fieldbus. However, some CASM services are not supported in the application and user layers of fieldbus. This study presents the method of implementing those services. In order to show that the implementation of interface is possible, this study presents pseudo-codes of interface program that maps the objects and services of UCA and fieldbus.

  • Recently, software-based programmable logic controller (PLC) systems, which are implemented in standard PLC languages on general hardware, are gaining popularity because they overcome the limitations of classical hardware PLC systems. Another noticeable trend is that the use of integrated development environment (IDE) is becoming important. IDEs can help developers to easily manage the growing complexity of modern control systems. Furthermore, industrial Ethernet, e.g. EtherCAT, is becoming widely accepted as a replacement for conventional fieldbuses in the distributed control domain because it offers favorable features such as short transmission delay, high bandwidth, and low cost. In this paper, we implemented the extension of open source IDE, called Beremiz, for developing EtherCAT-based real-time, synchronized motion control applications. We validated the EtherCAT system management features and the real-time responsiveness of the control function by using commercial EtherCAT drives and evaluation boards.

  • In order to provide real-time data from sensors and instruments at manufacturing processes on web, we proposed a communication service model based on XML(eXtensible Markup Language). HTML(Hyper Text Markup Language) is inadequate for describing real-time data from manufacturing plants while it is suitable for display of non-real-time multimedia data on web. For applying XML-based web service of process data in Intranet environment, real-time performance of communication services was evaluated to provide the system design criteria. XML schema for the data presentation was proposed and its communication performance was evaluated by simulation in terms of transmission delay due to increased message length and processing delay for transformation of raw data into defined format. For transformation of raw data into XML format, we proposed two structures: one is the scheme where transformation is done at an SCC(Supervisory Control Computer) after receiving real-time data from instruments. the other is the scheme where transformation is carried out at instruments before the data are transmitted to the SCC. Performances of two structures were evaluated on a testbed under various conditions such as six packet sizes and offered loads of 20%, 50% and 80%, respectively. Test results show that proposed schemes are applicable to the systems in Ethernet 100BaseT network if total message traffic is less than 7 Mbps.
