Numerical Studies on Flow Structures with Various Shapes of Needle-type Pintle in Solid Rocket Motor (Needle 형 pintle 형상에 따른 고체 로켓 모터 내부 유동장의 수치적 연구)

  • 고체로켓추진기관의 추력조절을 위해 핀틀 기술이 사용된다. 아직까지 핀틀 유동에 대해 근본적인 물리적 이해를 돕는 연구가 공개되지 않아, 이 연구에서 다양한 형상의 needle형 핀틀에 따른 유동구조에 대한 수치적 연구를 진행하였다. 2차원 축대칭, 압축성을 고려하여, 상용 열유체 해석 프로그램인 FLUENT 6.2를 사용하여 해석을 수행하였다. 난류 모델을 검증하기 위해 기 수행된 실험 결과와 비교하였다. 핀틀 각도(tip angle)가 작아질수록 노즐에서 유동 박리점이 하류로 이동하며, 핀틀에서 발생하는 끝단 충격파가 약해진다. 핀틀 반경(tip radius)이 작아질수록 핀틀에서 발생하는 끝단 충격파가 하류로 이동하며, 크기는 약해진다. 핀틀 형상(contour)은 유동 박리 지점에 직접적인 영향을 미친다.

Analysis of Pintle Tip Thermal Damage in the Combustion Hot Firing Test with a 1.5-tonf Class Liquid-Liquid Pintle Injector (1.5톤급 액체-액체 핀틀 분사기 연소시험에서의 핀틀 팁 열손상 원인 분석)

  • Using kerosene and liquid oxygen, 1.5-tonf class liquid-liquid pintle injector with rectangular two-row orifice was designed and manufactured. The combustion test of the pintle injector was carried out to verify the combustion performance and combustion stability under a supercritical condition which is the actual operation condition of the liquid rocket engine. The combustion test result showed that the pintle tip was damaged by the high temperature combustion gas in the high-mixed ratio recirculation zone of the combustion chamber. To solve this problem, the insert nozzle was installed in the pintle injector to increase cooling performance at the pintle tip. As a result of the hot firing test, installation of the insert nozzle, AR and BF had a great effect on pintle tip cooling performance.

  • In this study, determination method of initial optimal nozzle expansion in pintle rocket was investigated. The initial optimal initial nozzle expansion was decided by maximizing the mass-averaged thrust coefficient that is calculated from thrust coefficient of minimum and maximum chamber pressure. The determination of initial optimal initial nozzle expansion was equivalent to that of the minimum propellant mass which was required for obtaining the desired mission performance. The highest pressure, thrust turndown ratio and total impulse ratio effected on the initial optimal nozzle expansion. Among them, total impulse ratio had great influence on the initial optimal nozzle expansion.

  • Unsteady numerical simulations of pintle nozzles were implemented for solid rocket thrust vector control. The variation of pintle location was considered using unsteady numerical techniques, and dynamic characteristics of various pintle models were investigated. In order to consider the variation of the pintle location, a moving mesh method was applied. The effects of shape and location of the pintle nozzle have been analytically investigated. And the results were compared with numerical results. The chamber pressure, mass flow and thrust are analyzed to take account dynamic characteristics of pintle performance.

Spray Characteristics of a Movable Pintle Injector with Pintle Tip Shape (가변 핀틀 인젝터에서 핀틀 팁 형상에 따른 분무특성 연구)

  • In the development of the liquid rocket engine using the pintle injector, spray characteristics such as spray angle, droplet size, and distribution of the droplets are dominant parameters. Three different kind of multi hole type pintle tip and a continuous type pintle tip were designed. In the case of multi hole pintle tip, SMD result did not have a significant difference depending on the number of holes. In analysis with visualization images, however, the droplets were uniformly distributed as the number of holes increased. Liquid droplets from continuous type pintle tip were finely atomized and dispersed uniformly than those from multi-hole type pintle tip. In addition, the thrust control by adjusting the liquid injection area of the pintle is suitable for the continuous type, which is easier to face-shutoff rather than the multi hole type. The spray angle of each pintle tip according to TMR was measured to derive a specific tendency and corresponding empirical formula.

  • In this study, the effect of the shape of a pintle(obstacle) on thrust-modulation performance and drag in a pintle rocket was investigated by a cold flow test and by computational fluid dynamics. Pintle movement caused a monotonic increase in the chamber pressure. Thrust generated by the pressure distribution on the pintle body was linearly changed to the chamber pressure, and this thrust was greater than that generated by the nozzle-wall pressure distribution. Because the shock pattern in the nozzle changes with the shape of the pintle body and pressure ratio, the thrust generated by the nozzle-wall pressure is not directly affected by chamber pressure. The drag due to the pintle(obstacle) can be minimized for a fully linear pintle shape, regardless of chamber pressure.

  • In this study, analysis of the flow characteristics of pintle-controlled nozzle with split-line TVC system and the thrust performance prediction was performed. The numerical computation was verified by comparing the thrust coefficient derived from the analysis results with the experimental data. By applying the same numerical analysis technique, the flow characteristics of nozzle were confirmed according to operating altitude, pintle stroke position and TVC angle with the 1/10 scale. As the TVC angle increased, thrust loss occurred and the tendency of AF was different depending on the position of the pintle stroke. Based on the analysis results, the relation of thrust coefficient was derived by applying the response surface methods. The thrust performance model with a slight difference of 1.2% on average from the analysis result was generated.

  • In this study, a pintle injector rocket engine which uses kerosene and liquid oxygen as propellants was manufactured by collecting basic design data and establishing a design procedure. Combustion performance of the liquid rocket engine was investigated by characteristic velocity efficiency with characteristic length of the combustion chamber and total momentum ratio. As a result of hot fire tests, it showed that the engine had shorter characteristic length comparing to those of other type injectors, which was known as recommended value with the propellant combination. Also, the characteristic velocity efficiency was greatly affected by total momentum ratio and almost constant within 1.0~1.5.

  • Theoretical thrust equations for the diverse nozzle expansion condition were derived. By using the obtained thrust equations, parametric studies were carried out to estimate the effect of pressure exponent, minimum operation pressure, ambient pressure and extinguishment pressure on thrust modulation performance in pintle-nozzle solid rocket motors. Analysis results showed that thrust turndown ratio can be easily attained by small nozzle-throat area variation at high pressure exponent, low minimum operation pressure, high ambient pressure and high extinguishment pressure condition. At those conditions, the highest chamber pressure to obtain the intended thrust turndown ratio can be minimized.

  • Effects of injection conditions on a pintle injector which is proper to recent liquid rocket engines requiring low cost, low weight, high efficiency and reusability were studied. The pintle injector with a typical moving pintle was used for atmospheric experiment using water and air. Injection pressures of water were considered 0.5 and 1.0 bar, 0.1 to 1.0 bar for injection pressures of air and 0.2 to 1.0 mm for pintle opening distance. Sauter mean diameters (SMD) of spray was measured at 50 mm distance from a pintle tip and SMD was treated as a representative parameter in this study. As a result, because of shape characteristics of the pintle injector, there was a transient region between the pintle opening distances of 0.6 and 0.7 mm and this region affected to mass flow rates and SMDs. Also, Reynolds numbers for gas, Weber numbers and momentum ratios were adopted as major non-dimensional paramters and the momentum ratio has strong correlation with SMD.
