In order to improve Leak-Be(ore-Break methodology, more precisely the crack growth evaluation, a round robin analysis was proposed by the CEA Saclay. The aim of this analysis was to evaluate the crack initiation life, penetration life and shape of through wall crack under cyclic bending loads. The proposed round robin analysis is composed of three main topic; fatigue crack initiation, crack propagation and crack penetration. This paper deals with the first topic, crack initiation in a notched pipe under four point bending. Both elastic-plastic finite element analysis and Neuber's rule were used to estimate the crack initiation life and the finite element models were verified by mesh-refinement, stress distribution and global deflection. In elastic-plastic finite element analysis, crack initiation life was determined by strain amplitude at the notch tip and strain-life curve of the material. In the analytical method, Neuber's rule with the consideration of load history and mean stress effect, was used for the life estimation. The effect of notch tip radius, strain range, cyclic hardening rule were examined in this study. When these results were compared with the experimental ones, the global deformation was a good agreement but the crack initiation cycle was higher than the experimental result.

This study produced a design curve and fatigue limit for a variation in volume ratio and reduction ratio of TiNi/Al composites. In many cases, stress-life curve does not indicate fatigue limit, so it was presented by probabilistic-stress-life curve. Goodman diagram was used to analyze the fatigue strength of materials with a finite life determined by repeated load and the fatigue strength of endurance limit with an infinite life. The fatigue experiment was conducted using the scenk-type plane bending specimen in same shape. The result of the fatigue test, which had been conducted under consistent stress amplitude, was examined. (i) The optimal condition for TiNi/Al in accordance with hot pressing (ii) Impacts of fatigue limit caused by a variation in reduction ratio and volume ratio of TiNi/Al composites (iii) Probability distribution for fatigue limit of TiNi/Al2024 and TiNi/Al6061.
In designing, the strength of tubular joint has been an important problem for integrity of steel structures in which many tubular members are used. This paper presents the results of FEM analysis on stress concentration and fatigue crack initiation life for two types of tubular joints. One is circular and rectangular T type joints which consist of circular brace and rectangular chord. Another is circular and circular T type joints which consist of circular brace and circular chord. FEM analyses were performed under the axial load and in-plane bending moment. The fatigue crack initiation life can be estimated by using $\varepsilon$-N curve and by applying the Palmgren-Miner linear damage rule. According to the results, the stress concentration factor(SCF) of circular and rectangular joints is higher than that of circular and circular joints. The fatigue crack initiation lives of circular-circular joints and circular-rectangular joints were calculated.
The purpose of this study is fatigue damage assessment for large sized casting parts (hub and mainframe) of the 3MW offshore wind turbine by computer simulation. Hub and mainframe durability assessment is necessary because wind turbine have to guarantee for 20 years. Fatigue life evaluation must be considered all of fatigue load conditions as the components are wind load transmission path. Palmgren-Miner linear damage accumulation hypothesis is applied for fatigue life estimation with stress-life approach. S-N curve for the spheroid graphite cast iron EN-GJS-400-18-LT is derived according to durability guidelines. Reduction factors were applied for survival probability, surface roughness, material quality and partial safety factor according to Germanischer Lloyd rules. To calculate fatigue damage, stress tensors, extracted from the unity load calculation from ANSYS is multiplied with time track of fatigue loads extracted from GH bladed. Damage accumulation is performed with all of fatigue load conditions at each finite element nodes. In this study maximum nodal damage value is under 1.0. casted parts are safe. Submarine and deep sea diving structures are generally designed based on their ultimate strength. Fatigue strength at welded joint must be also taken into account because working stress is increased due to the increasing of diving depth and using high yield steel. The pressure hulls of submarine are subjected to fluctuating compressive loading. But in addition to the calculated stresses, high residual tensile stresses at welded part have to be considered. The state of stress level of pressure hull is tensile at surface and compressive at deep diving depth. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on the crack initiation and growth at the weld toe of T welded joints of HY-100 steel plate under constant amplitude loading. It is also investigated the phenomenon of the fatigue failure and test methods. Fatigue tests have been using real scaled local structural models of full penetration T-welded joint, which is a part of the cylindrical shell structures reinforced by ring stiffeners. Several load ratios under constant amplitude loading are considered in the tests. Crack initiation and growth characteristics are examined based on the beach marks of the cracked section of the test specimens. A design stress-life curve including the design formula is suggested according to tested data.

High-strength steel has replaced mild steel as the material of choice for truck decks or frames, owing to the growing demand for lightweight vehicles. Although studies on the weld fatigue characteristics of mild steel are available, studies on high-strength steels have been seldom conducted. In this study, firstly, we surveyed a chosen number of approaches and selected the Radaj method, which uses the notch factor approach, as the one suitable for evaluating the fatigue life of commercial vehicles. Secondly, we obtained the S-N curves of HARDOX and ATOS60 steel welds, and the F-N curves of the T-weld and overlapped-weld structures. Thirdly, we acquired a general S-N curve of welded structures made of high-strength steel from the F-N curve, using the notch factor approach. Fourthly, we extracted the weld fatigue characteristics of high-strength steel and incorporated the results in the database of a commercial fatigue program. Finally, we compared the results of the fatigue test and the CAE prediction of the example case, which demonstrated sufficiently good agreement.

Two types of very small multiplying gears and arrays have been developed for new dental hand-pieces, and the increased speed ratios, modules, number of teeth, gear diameters, and gear types were calculated based on the dynamics of the machinery. The contacting and bending strengths were evaluated for gear teeth with two design concepts using AGMA equations and finite element analyses, and the contacting stresses on teeth with and without DLC (diamond-like-carbon) coating layers were calculated. Fatigue and tension tests were performed to obtain an S-N curve, the Young's modulus, and the strength of the gear material, and these were utilized in the analyses. Slightly larger stresses were found for 2-axis-type gears than for other types of gears, and the S-N curves showed that a gear lifetime of 109 cycles was satisfied. The contacting stresses in gears coated with DLC were reduced by 30%. A new prototype model of a hand-piece with small gears was successfully fabricated and tested.

Medical waste management is becoming increasingly important, specifically in light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, as hospitals, clinics, quarantine centers, and medical research institutes are generating tons of medical waste every day. Previously, a traditional incineration process was utilized for managing medical waste, but the lack of landfill sites, and accompanying environmental concerns endanger public health. Consequently, an innovative sterilization shredding system was developed to resolve this problem. In this research, we focused on the design and numerical analysis of a shredding system for hazardous and infectious medical waste, to establish its operational performance. The shredding machine's components were modeled in a CAD application, and finite element analysis (FEA) was conducted using ABAQUS software. Static, fatigue, and dynamic loading conditions were used to analyze the structural stability of the cutting blade. The blade geometry proved to be effective based on the cutting force applied to shred medical waste. The dynamic stability of the structure was verified using modal analysis. Furthermore, an S-N curve was generated using a high cycle fatigue study, to predict the expected life of the cutting blade. Resultantly, an appropriate shredder system was devised to link with a sterilization unit, which could be beneficial in reducing the volume of medical waste and disposal time, thereof, thus eliminating environmental issues, and potential health hazards.

The urban railway sleeper floating track, the subject of this study, is an anti-vibration track to reduce vibration transmitted to the structure. currently, the replacement cycle of resilience pad for sleeper floating tracks is set and operated based on load. however, most previous studies were conducted on load-based structural safety aspects, such as fatigue life evaluation of sleeper anti-vibration pads and increase in track impact coefficient and track support stiffness due to increase in spring stiffness. therefore, in this study, we measure the vibration acceleration of the ballast for each analysis section and use the results of 7 million fatigue tests to calculate the spring stiffness of the resilience pad for each section. the spring stiffness of the resilience pad calculated for each section was set as the analysis data and the concrete vibration acceleration was derived analytically. the adequacy of analysis modeling was verified as the analyzed concrete bed vibration acceleration for each section was within the field-measured concrete bed vibration acceleration range. using the vibration acceleration curve according to the derived spring stiffness change, the spring stiffness of the resilience pad is estimated from the measured vibration acceleration. therefore, we would like to present a technique that can estimate the spring stiffness of resilience pad of a running track using the vibration acceleration of the measured concrete bed.
