In this paper, statistical approach to prediction of A-weighted noise level in ship cabins. based on multiple linear regression analysis, is conducted. The best regression formula is composed of seven parameters of the deadweight, the type of ship, the location of engines and cabins, the type of deckhouse and the propeller skew angle. Verification work was carried out with other 210 cabins' data in 6 ships. As a result, the formula ensures the accuracy of 3 dB(A) in 77 % of cases.

A Quad Tilt Wing UAV is a new concept hybrid UAV having the advantages of both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. This paper presents longitudinal flight dynamic characteristics of a Quad Tilt Wing UAV. The designed Quad Tilt Wing UAV is a configuration of a tandem wing type aircraft with an actuating motor and propeller mounted at each wing. Momentum theory is used to calculate the thrust, and nonlinear modeling is performed considering lift and drag generated by slip stream effect of propellers. Also, Force and moment variation at each tilting angle is considered. Static trim on longitudinal axis is analyzed via numerical simulation. Componentwise force contribution was analyzed at each trim mode. Dynamic characteristics were evaluated through eigenvalue analysis for a linear model at each flight mode. It is verified that longitudinal dynamic characteristics are changing from unstable to stable state by continuous transition of dominant poles.

A feasibility study is performed for practical application of a Ventilating Water-Jet(VWJ) propulsor which attracts new attention as a candidate propulsor for super-high speed vessels. Super-cavitating foil sections are adopted for the rotor blades since the rotor is operating at ventilating condition. Wedge type and cavitator type foil sections are used for the design of rotor blades. Other geometric characteristics of rotors are selected from the Kaplan type ducted propeller rotors. The test section of KRISO cavitation tunnel is modified to perform open-water tests of the VWJ propulsors. The tests are performed both at fully-submerged and free-jet conditions. Ventilation occurred at the free-jet condition by sucking the air in the downstream side of the rotor, which easily develops as super-cavitation when the rotor operates at lower advance coefficients. Spoilers are attached at the trailing end of the pressure side of the blade section, in order to increase the lift force.

This paper contains a new approach to blade section design method for marine propellers. The hydrodynamic characteristics of 2-D section are highly influenced by its geometrical parameters i.e., thickness and camber distributions and leading edge radius etc. To consider fully turbulent flow field near 2-D section. the finite volume method with k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulent model which solve Reynolds time averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equation is applied. In this study, O-type grid system that can provide many calculation points on blade surface is used. The results were compared with those of the experiment of NACA0012 to confirm the accuracy of the developed codes. The goal of this study is the development of a blade section with high efficiency and low drag. To achieve this, we carried out the tests of lift, drag and cavitation characteristics in cavitation tunnel. The results of experiment were compared with numerical results in order to validate the proposed blades design method. By comparing the numerical results with the experiments, we found that the new blade section, KH28 allows superior performance in efficiency and cavitation avoidance characteristics. We further investigated the blade section design method and an application study of this section, KH28 to apply to the marine propeller. In order to improve the accuracy of numerical results on prediction of lift and drag, we conclude here that the 2-layer boundary model must be used.

Viscous flow around actual ship is calculated by an use of RANS equations. The propriety of this computing method, usefulness to hull form design and the scale effect which is the effect of viscous flow depending on the scale of ship model are investigated. Reynolds stress is modelled by using k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and the law of wall is applied near the body. Body fitted coordinates are introduced for the treatment of the arbitrary 3-dimensional shape of the ship hull form. The transformed equations in the computational domain are numerically solved by an employment of FVM. In the calculation of pressure, SIMPLE method is adopted and the solution of the discretized equation is obtained by the line-by-line method with the use of TDMA The calculations of two ships, 4410 TEU container carrier and 50,000 DWT class bulk carrier, are performed at model and actual ship scale. The results are compared and discussed with the model test results which are viscous resistance, nominal wake distribution at propeller plane and limiting streamline on the hull surface. They describe the effect of stem form and the scale effect very well. In particular, the calculated nominal wake distribution and limiting streamline are agreed qualitatively with the experiments and the viscous resistance values are estimated within ${\pm}5%$ difference from the resistance tests.

In this research, the initial sizing of a HALE(High Altitude Long Endurance) UAV which uses solar power and hydrogen fuel cell as an alternative energy was performed. Instead of a wing box type, a glider type was chosen since it is relatively easy to get a data thanks to many researches abroad. Maximum takeoff weight is around 150Kg and the propulsion system is composed of motor, propeller, solar cell, and hydrogen fuel cell which can be recharged through electrolysis. Maximum takeoff weight was estimated as aspect ratio, wing span, wing area change while considering energy balance of required energy which is necessary for flight during the entire day and available energy which can be taken from the solar cell.

Ever increasing fuel prices and environmental concerns are forcing commercial vessel operators and designers to re-assess current vessel designs with an emphasis on their propulsion systems. The most important parameter determining propulsive efficiency is the diameter of propeller. Many investigations have been carried out to adapt a large and slow turning propeller known as one of the most robust and effective way of achieving high efficiency in ship propulsion system. However, for the same vessel a further increase of propeller diameter would require the modification of the aft end while still paying attention to the hull clearance to prevent excessive propeller excited vibrations. In order to take the advantage of this approach small workboats (e.g. tug boats, fishing vessels etc.) operate in service with a significant increase of aft draught and hence resulting "inclined keel" configuration can be observed. Although it is not unusual to see large vessels sometimes to operate with stern trim to improve their operational performance and fuel efficiency, it is rare to see a such vessel purposely built with an inclined keel feature to fit a large diameter propeller for power saving. This paper investigates the application of the inclined keel configuration to a 3600TEU container vessel with the aim of fitting an 11 % larger diameter propeller (and hence resulting 17.5 % lower rpm) to gain further power saving over the similar size basis container ship with conventional "level keel" configuration.
In this paper, we perform a study on the directionality of broadband ship radiation noise, mainly resulting from propeller cavitation. By examining a few foreign studies for ship radiation noise and domestic data measured in Korean waters, it is reconfirmed that the asymmetric directionality of the ship radiation noise at bow and stern aspect is observed commonly. In order to explore the reason of this asymmetric directionality, a numerical analysis, based on the acoustic boundary element method, is applied into the geometric form equal to the commercial ship used in the domestic experiment. The numerical result demonstrates that the diffraction of the propeller cavitation noise by ship is a primary cause of the bow-stern asymmetry in the directionality of ship radiation noise.

A higher order panel method based on representation for both the geometry and the velocity potential is developed for the analysis of steady flow around marine propellers. The self-influence functions due to the normal dipole and the source are desingularized through the quadratic transformation, and then the singular part is integrated analytically whereas the non-singular part is integrated using Gaussian quadrature. A null pressure jump Kutta condition at the trailing edge is found to be effective in stabilizing the solution process and in predicting the correct solution. Numerical experiments indicate that the present method is robust and predicts the pressure distribution around lifting bodies with much fewer panels than existing low order panel methods.

This paper describes the method of statistical analysis and its programs for predicting the ship's powering performance. The equation for the wavemaking resistance coefficient is derived as the sectional area coefficients by using the wavemaking resistance theory and its regression coefficients are determined from the regression analysis of the model test results. The equations for the form factor, wake franction and thrust deduction fraction are derived by purely regression analysis of the principal dimensions, sectional area coefficients and model test results. The statistical analyses are performed using the various descriptive statistic and stepwise regression analysis techniques. The powering performance prognosis program is developed to cover the prediction of resistance coefficients, propulsive coefficients, propeller open-water efficiency and various scale effect corrections.
