  • A second-order upwind scheme is used to investigate the run-up heights of tsunamis in the East Sea and the predicted results are compared with the field data and results of a first-order upwind scheme. In the numerical model, the governing equations solved by the finite difference scheme are the linear shallow-water equations in deep water and nonlinear shallow-water equations in shallow water. The target events are 1983 Central East Sea Tsunami and 1993 Hokkaido Nansei Oki Tsunami. The predicted results represent reasonably well the run-up heights of tsunamis in the East Sea. And, the results of simulation are used for the design of inundation map.

  • In this paper the CSCM type upwind flux difference splitting Navier-Stokes method has been applied to study the ARL-SL19 supersonic/transonic compressor cascade flow. H-type grid was chosen for its simplicity in applying cyclic tridiagonal matrix algorithm along with conventional slip/no-slip boundary conditions. The thin-layer algebraic model of Baldwin-Lomax was employed for the calculation of turbulent flows. The test case inlet Mach No. was 1.612 and inlet/exit pressure ratio($P_2/P_1$) was 2.15. The results were compared with experimental results from current method were compared well in suction surface with the experiments and other computational results; however, not well in pressure surface. It might be due to the complex flowfields such as shock/boundary layer interaction, turbulence, and flow separation, etc. In the future, a proper turbulence modelling and adaptive grid system will be studied to improve the solution quality.

  • Studies of the numerical characteristics of implicit upwind schemes, such as upwind ADI, Line Gauss-Seidel(LGS) and Point Gauss-Seidel(LU) algorithms, for preconditioned Navier-Stokes equations ate performed. All the algorithms are expressed in approximate factorization form and Von Neumann stability analysis and convergence studies are made. Preconditioning is applied for efficient convergence at low Mach numbers and low Reynolds numbers. For high aspect ratio computations, the ADI and LGS algorithms show efficient and uniform convergence up to moderate aspect ratio if we adopt viscous preconditioning based on min- CFL/max- VNN time-step definition. The LU algorithm, on the other hand, shows serious deterioration in convergence rate as the grid aspect ratio increases. Computations for practical applications also verify these results.

  • In the present paper, a new calculation algorithm far solving large scale environmental or geophysical flows with free surface is proposed where the non-hydrostatic pressure component is taken into consideration. Predictor-corrector fractional step approach with explicit, forward time marching scheme in the sigma coordinate system is employed. In order to validate the present calculation algorithm and to estimate the effects of non-hydrostatic pressure on resultant flow and free surface movements, example calculations are carried out for typical steady and unsteady flow problems. Present method can be applied to the meso-scale free surface flows with complex bottom topography where MAC-like 3-d hydrodynamic calculations are quite ineffective and uneconomic.

Time-derivative preconditioning method was applied for efficient convergence at low Mach/Reynolds number regime as well as at large grid aspect ratios. All the algorithms were expressed in approximate factorization form and von Neumann stability analysis was performed to identify stability characteristics of the above algorithms in the presence of high grid aspect ratios. Stability analysis showed that for high aspect ratio computations, the ADI and LGS algorithms showed efficient damping effect up to moderate aspect ratio if we adopt viscous preconditioning based on min-CFL/max-VNN time-step definition. The LU algorithm, on the other hand, showed serious deterioration in stability characteristics as the grid aspect ratio increases. • Implicit numerical scheme using fractional step method and FCT is used to improve the computational efficiency of WAM. Square wave test and simulation of typhoon generated waves are conducted to verify the numerical scheme. The applied scheme shows much less numerical diffusion and due to the implicit character of the scheme much larger time steps can be used without numerical instability. For typhoon MAEMI, comparison between the numerical results and the measured data shows good agreement.

  • By using he total variation diminishing (TVD) condition, accurate and upwind based schemes are firstly introduced to develop numerical models free from nonphysical oscillations in the vicinity of large gradients. These models are then applied to both abruptly and smoothly varying initial conditions. By comparing computed predictions to analytical solutions, it is clearly shown that the first-order upwind scheme produces the numerical viscosity and the second-order Lax-Wendroff scheme produces the spurious oscillations. However, the TVD scheme gives the most reasonable results.
