  • In this paper the feasibility of wind power forecasting from MOS(Model Output Statistics) was evaluated at Gosan area in Jeju during February to Octoberin 2008. The observed wind data from wind turbine was compared with 24 hours and 48 hours forecasting wind data from MOS predicting. Coefficient of determination of measured wind speed from wind turbine and 24 hours forecasting from MOS was around 0.53 and 48 hours was around 0.30. These determination factors were increased to 0.65 from 0.53 and 0.35 from 0.30, respectively, when it comes to the prevailing wind direction($300^{\circ}\sim60^{\circ}$). Wind power forecasting ratio in 24 hours of MOS showed a value of 0.81 within 70% confidence interval and it also showed 0.65 in 80% confidence interval. It is suggested that the additional study of weather conditions be carried out when large error happened in MOS forecasting.

  • In this study, an SW for the analysis of the wind-turbine vibration characteristics was developed as an application of SaaS cloud infrastructure. A measurement system for power-performance, mechanical load, and gearbox vibration as type-test class was installed at a target MW-class wind turbine, and structural meta and raw data were then acquired into the cloud. Data processing algorithms were developed to provide cloud data to the SW. To operate the SW continuously, raw data was downloaded consistently based on the algorithms. During the SW test, an intermittent long time-delay occurred due to the communication load associated with frequent access to the cloud. To solve this, a compression service for the target raw data was developed in the cloud and more stable data processing was confirmed. Using the compression service, stable big data processing of wind turbines, including gearbox vibration analysis, is expected.

  • This study purposed to predict wind energy for small size wind power generators at 50m above the ground in each area using mean wind speed data for 10 minutes collected from 2001 to 2011 by meteorological data in large cities having over 60% of 15 story (50m) or higher apartments including Seoul, Daejeon, Gwangju and Daegu representing the inland region, and Busan, Incheon and Ulsan representing the coastal region. In the results of analysis, we confirmed close agree ment between observatory weather data and probability density distribution obtained using Weibull's parameters, and this suggests that Weibull's parameter is applicable to the estimation of wind energy. Hourly output energy using the mean wind speed for 10 minutes and output energy obtained from Weibull's parameter showed an error less than 5%, and thus it was found that wind energy can be evaluated using Weibull's modulus.

  • After oil shock, the importance of renewable energy has emerged and it came to the fore again as Korean government declared the policy on low-carbon green growth. Among various renewable energies, it is generally accepted that wind power is the most practical alternative. In this paper we showed the process of producing wind speed map from Gangwon Regional Meteorological Administration's 2008 data. We mapped monthly average and maximum wind speed and compared several interpolation methods applied to the weather data. This wind speed map, which reflects Gangwon's topographical and climatic regional characteristics, is expected to be a good tool for wind farm location analysis.

  • A feasibility study to estimate annual energy production of an offshore wind farm was performed using MERRA reanalysis data. Two well known commercial codes commonly used to wind farm design and power prediction were used. Three years of MERRA data were used to predict annual energy predictions of the offshore wind farm close to Copenhagen from 2011 to 2013. The availability of the wind farm was calculated from the power output data available online. It was found from the study that the MERRA reanalysis data with commercial codes could be used to fairly accurately predict the annual energy production from offshore wind farms when a meteorological mast is not available.

  • Predictions of wind speed for six different near-shore sites were made using the NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research) wind data. The distances between the NCAR sites and prediction sites were varied between 40km and 150km. A well-known wind energy prediction program, WindPRO, was used. The prediction results were compared with the measured data from the AWS(Automated Weather Stations). Although the NCAR wind data were located far away from the AWS sites, the prediction errors were within 9% for all the cases. In terms of sector-wise wind energy distributions, the predictions were fairly close to the measurements, and the error in predicting main wind direction was less than $30^{\circ}$. This proves that the NCAR wind data are very useful in roughly estimating wind energy in offshore or near-shore sites where offshore wind farm might be constructed in Korea.

  • Condition Monitoring System (CMS) has been used to detect unexpected faults of wind turbine caused by the abrupt change of circumstances or the aging of its mechanical part. In fact, it is a very hard work to do regular inspection for its maintenance because wind turbine is located on the mountaintop or sea. The purpose of this study is to find out distribution patterns of vibration signals measured from the main mechanical parts of wind turbine according to its operation condition. To this end, acceleration signals of main bearing, gearbox, generator, wind speed, rotational speed, etc were measured through the long period more than 2 years and trend analyses on each signal were conducted as a function of the rotational speed. In addition, correlation analysis among the signals was done to grasp the relation between mechanical parts. As a result, the vibrations were dependent on the rotational speed of main shaft and whether power was generated or not, and their distributions at a specific rotational speed could be approximated to Weibull distribution. It was also investigated that the vibration at main bearing was correlated with vibration at gearbox each other, whereas vibration at generator should be dealt with individually because of generating mechanism. These results can be used for improving performance of CMS that early detects the mechanical abnormality of wind turbine.
