  • In this study, we investigate the pool boiling enhancement caused by perforated plates on top of a smooth surface. We conduct tests using R-123 at atmospheric pressure. It was shown that perforated plates significantly enhanced the pool boiling of the smooth surface. The reason may be attributed to the increased bubble contact area between the plates. The results showed that the enhancement ratio was dependent on the heat flux. At high heat flux, the enhancement ratio increased as the porosity increased. However, at low heat flux, the enhancement ratio decreased as the porosity increased. For the present investigation, the optimum configuration had a pore diameter of 2.0 mm, pore pitch of $2.5mm{\times}5.0mm$ or $5.0mm{\times}5.0mm$, and a gap width of 0.5 mm, which yielded heat-transfer coefficients that are close to those of GEWA-T. The optimum porosity for R-123 was significantly larger than that of water or ethanol. The reason for this may be the large liquid-to-vapor density ratio along with the small latent heat of vaporization of R-123. The perforated plates yielded smaller boiling hysteresis compared with that of the smooth surface.

  • A new empirical correlation was developed to identify the effect of an inclination angle on pool boiling heat transfer coefficient of a tube submerged in the saturated water at atmospheric pressure. Through the experiments and the survey of published results 431 data points were obtained and the nonlinear least square method was used as a regression technique. The heat flux of the tube($0{\sim}120kW/m^2$), inclination angle($0^{\circ}{\sim}90^{\circ}$), and the length divided by the diameter of a tube(18~42.52) were selected as major parameters. The newly developed correlation well predicts the experimental data within ${\pm}18%$, with some exceptions.

  • To investigate pool boiling heat transfer in a vertical annulus with closed bottoms, the length of an outer tube was varied between 0.3 and 0.6 m. For the test, a heated tube of 0.2-m length and 19.1-mm diameter and water at atmospheric pressure were used. To elucidate the effects of the outer tube length on heat transfer, the results for the annulus were compared with data for a single unrestricted tube. The increase in the outer tube length resulted in an increase or decrease in heat transfer depending on the gap size. This tendency is mainly attributed to the difference in the intensity of liquid agitation.

  • For performance improvement and compactness, usage of enhanced tube is inevitable. However, studies on enhanced tubes for generator is very limited. In this study, pool boiling tests were conducted for 7 heat transfer tubes. Test range covered pressure 7.38~101.3 kPa and heat flux $20{\sim}40kW/m^2$. Results show that boiling heat transfer coefficient increases as pressure or heat flux increases. Under atmospheric condition, high heat transfer coefficients were obtained for notched fin and low fin tubes(225% and 202% of the 19.0 mm smooth tube, which yielded the lowest heat transfer coefficient). As pressure decreased, high heat transfer coefficients were obtained for a low fin tube(290% and 288% of the 19.0 mm smooth tube at 12.34 and 7.38 kPa).

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effect of the inclination angle on the nucleate pool boiling of saturated water at atmospheric pressure. We considered an annulus with a gap of 5 mm and a bottom opening. The inner tube of the annulus was heated, and the outer diameter and the length of the tube were 25.4 mm and 500 mm, respectively. The inclination angle was varied from horizontal to vertical. The results were compared to those for an annulus with a larger gap and a single tube. In the small-gap annulus, the effect of the inclination angle on the heat transfer was not significant. However, an early onset of the critical heat flux was observed at 80 kW/$m^2$ when the annulus was horizontal. Liquid agitation and bubble coalescence were considered to be the major heat-transfer mechanisms.

  • An experimental study is performed to obtain an average heat transfer coefficient around the perimeter of a near horizontal tube. For the test a stainless steel tube of 50.8 mm diameter submerged in water at atmospheric pressure is used. Both subcooled and saturated pool boiling conditions are considered and the inclination angle of the tube is changed from the horizontal position to $9^{\circ}$ in steps of $3^{\circ}$. In saturated water, the local boiling heat transfer coefficient at the azimuthal angle of $90^{\circ}$ from the tube bottom can be regarded as the average of the coefficients regardless of the tube inclination angles. However, when the water is subcooled the location for the average heat transfer coefficient depends on the inclination angle and the heat flux. It is explained that the major mechanisms changing the heat transfer are closely related with the intensity of the liquid agitation and the generation of big size bubbles through bubble coalescence.

  • The behavior of a one-step fixed bed reactor which directly synthesizes dimethyl ether(DME) from Natural Gas was simulated. In the reactor, the prevention of the occurrence of hot spots which can cause deactivation of catalysts is pivotal, since methanol synthesis and dehydration reaction involved in the synthesis of DME are highly exothermic. Therefore, we simulated and compared performance of the reactor with counter-current cooling and pool boiling system that can be applied to a commercial plant. As a result, we found that counter-current cooling system is more effective in terms of CO conversion and DME productivity. However, pool boiling system can operate in a small temperature gradient that can decrease problems caused by hot spot. And, the system can operate in a safer range.

  • This study investigate experimentally the effect of in height, thickness, and clearance on the boiling heat transfer. The heat surfaces having copper fin array is tested for pool boiling. The gas-liquid exchange interference is investigated based on fin array clearance. These test results can be applied to the design of tube bundle system. The fin height of 2 mm is found to be effective. Effects of heat transfer promotion reaches the highest level when the fin clearance is 0.5mm. Also, heat flux is increased when the fin thickness is smaller. But0.2 mm fin thickness is highly recommended.

  • In order to clarify the effect of tube orientation on pool boiling heat transfer, the experiments were carried out for the saturated pool boiling of water at atmospheric pressure. Through the tests a series of data sets for heat flux versus wall superheat has been obtained using various combinations of tube diameters (D=9.7 $\~$25.4mm), surface roughness ($\varepsilon$=15.1$\~$60.9nm), and tube orientations (horizontal and vertical). ηei experimental results show that the slope of heat flux versus wall superheat becomes smaller than that of the horizontal tube as the surface roughness decreases from $\varepsilon$=60.9 to $\varepsilon$=15.1nm. Such that, two curves for the horizontal and vertical tubes cross each other in accordance with surface roughness and the crossing point can be suggested as q" = ‘-4.768+1.334$\varepsilon$+0.055${\varepsilon}^2$.
