  • Inverse synthetic aperture radar(ISAR) images represent two-dimensional(2-D) spatial distribution of electromagnetic scattering phenomenology against a target. Hence, they are usually used in the areas of automatic target recognition (ATR) or non-cooperative target recognition(NCTR), identifying a target using radar in a long distance. This paper makes use of Korea Miniature Synthetic Aperture Radar(KOMSAR) to generate ISAR images of a real and maneuvering aircraft. The data obtained from KOMSAR are processed to eliminate phase errors due to motion of a target, with the use of entropy-based ISAR autofocusing technique. Results show that we can successfully obtain ISAR images of a real aircraft, and the success of experiments implies that a significant step toward ATR using radar has been established.

  • Modeling of artificial targets in Synthetic Aperture radar (SAR) mainly simulates radar signals reflected from the faces and edges of the 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) model with a ray-tracing method, and modeling of the clutter on the Earth's surface uses a method of distinguishing types with similar distribution characteristics through statistical analysis of the SAR image itself. In this paper, man-made targets on the surface and background clutter on the terrain are integrated and made into a three-dimensional (3D) point cloud scatterer model, and SAR image were created through computational signal processing. The results of the SAR Stripmap image generation of the actual automobile based SAR radar system and the results analyzed using EM modeling or statistical distribution models are compared with this 3D point cloud scatterer model. The modeling target is selected as an bridge because it has the characteristic of having both water surface and ground terrain around the bridge and is also a target of great interest in both military and civilian use.

  • This paper introduces a bistatic ISAR imaging technique. In bistatic geometry, the transmitter and receiver are placed in different locations. The monostatic ISAR is inadequate not only for obtaining images on targets approaching along the radar's line of sight, but also for stealth targets. In this paper, geometry, signal modeling as well as bistatic Doppler for bistatic ISAR are introduced to address these problems. Simulations results show bistatic ISAR images as well as monostatic ISAR images against target's moving scenarios, and analyze their differences for each scenario.

  • This paper presents an target tracking algorithm for fusion of radar and infrared(IR) sensor measurement data. Generally, fusion methods with Kalman filter assume that processing data obtained by radar and IR sensor are synchronized. It has much limitation to apply the fusion methods to real systems. A key point which is taken into account in the proposed algorithm is the fact that two asynchronous dissimilar data are fused by compensating the time difference of the measurements using radar's ranges and track state vectors. The proposed fusion algorithm in the paper is evaluated via a computer simulation with the existing track fusion and measurement fusion methods.

  • Based on IALA guidelines, the fundamental requirements of radar system for vessel traffic services are analyzed in this paper. target separation, target position accuracy, target track accuracy of X-band radar and recommended test conditions are analyzed. Also, in order to check if it satisfies the requirement of target position accuracy from IALA guideline, the test is carried out through processing of radar raw image acquired at VTS center.

  • Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar(ISAR) image is 2-dimensional radar cross section distributions of a target. For target approaching along radar's line of sight(LOS), the bistatic ISAR can compensate for the weakness of the monostatic ISAR which can not obtain the vertical resolution of the image. However, bistatic ISAR have longer processing times and variability in scattering mechanisms than monostatic ISAR, so target identification using only bistatic ISAR images can be inefficient. Therefore, this paper analyzes target identification performance using monostatic and bistatic ISAR images of targets approaching along radar's LOS and proposes a method of target identification through fusion of two radars. Simulation results demonstrate that identification performance through fusion is more efficient than identification performance using only monostatic, bistatic ISAR images.

  • The classical image reconstruction for stripmap-mode Synthetic Aperture Radar is the Range-Doppler algorithm. When the spotlight-mode SAR system was envisioned, Range-Doppler algorithm turned out to fail rapidly in this SAR imaging modality. Thus, what is referred to as Polar format algorithm, which is based on the Plane wave approximation, was introduced for imaging from spotlight-mode SAR raw- data. In this paper, we have studied for the raw data processing schemes in the spotlight-mode Synthetic Aperture Radar. We apply the Wavefront Reconstruction scheme that does not utilize the approximation in spotlight-mode SAR imaging modelity, and compare the performance of target imaging with the Polar format inversion scheme.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to classify inverse synthetic aperture radar(ISAR) image from different target. The approach can provide efficient features for classification by the combined use of a polar mapping procedure and a well-designed classifier The resulting feature vectors are able to meet requirements that efficient features should have : invariance with respect to rotation and scale, small dimensionality, as well as highly discriminative information. Typical experimental examples of the proposed method are provided and discussed.

  • Image chain analysis of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite is one of the primary activities for satellite design because SAR image quality depends on spacecraft bus performance as well as SAR payload. Especially, satellite pointing and stability error make worst effect on the original SAR image quality which is implemented by SAR payload design. In this research, Image chain analysis S/W was developed in order to analyze the SAR image quality degradation due to satellite pointing and stability error. This S/W consists of orbit model, attitude control model, SAR payload model, clutter model, and SAR processor. SAR raw data, which includes total 25 point targets in the scene of $5km{\times}5km$ swath width, was generated and then processed for analysis. High resolution mode (spotlight), of which resolution is 1m, was applied. The results of image chain analysis show that radiometric accuracy is the most degraded due to the pointing error. Therefore, the successful design of attitude control subsystem in spacecraft bus for enhancing the pointing accuracy is most important for image quality.
