  • Surface defects in structural members are apt to be origins of fatigue cracks growth, which may cause serious failure of whole structures. Most structure has a part where stress concentrates such as welded joints, corner parts, etc. And then, analysis on crack growth and penetration from these defects, therefore, is one of the most important subjects for the reliability of LBB design. The present paper has performed an experimental and analysis on the fatigue crack propagation by variety in crack length of surface cracked plate with stress concentration part. The crack growth behavior can be explained quantitatively by using Newman-Raju equation and the stress partitioning method proposed by ASME B&P Code Sec. XI. The stress concentration factor $K_t$ has affected on the crack growth. The crack growth after penetration depends upon the initial front side crack length.

  • Accurate stress intensity factor analyses and crack growth rate of surface-cracked components in inhomogeneous materials are needed for reliable prediction of their fatigue lift and fracture strengths. This paper describes an automated system for analyzing the stress intensity factors of three-dimensional (3D) cracks in inhomogeneous materials. 3D finite element method (FEM) was used to obtain the stress intensity factor for subsurface cracks and surface cracks existing in inhomogeneous materials. To examine accuracy and efficiency of the present system, the stress intensity factor for a semi-elliptical surface crack in a plate subjected to uniform tension is calculated, and compared with Raju-Newman's solutions. Then the system is applied to analyze cladding effect of subsurface cracks in inhomogeneous materials. The results were compared with those surface cracks in homogeneous materials. It is clearly demonstrated from these analyses that the stress intensity factors for subsurface cracks are less than those of surface cracks.

  • The internal stress and magnetic properties (coercivity and squareness) of Ni-Fe nano thin film synthesized by electrodeposition method were studied as a function of acidic chloride bath conditions (composition and temperature) and current density. Fe deposition patterns were different depending on the temperature of the solution, the stress of film decreased with increasing the solution temperature, and the depending on the amount of Fe deposition showed a parabolic shape. The grain size of film was inversely proportional to stress of thin film. The internal stress of thin film and magnetic properties were deeply relevant, and the stress of thin film had a relationship with bath conditions and grain size of the thin film surface.

  • Hardness and internal stress are very important in nickel electroforming. Nickel sulfamate bath has been widely used in electroforming because of its low internal stress and moderate hardness. Nickel sulfamate bath without chloride was chosen to investigated the effect of plating variable such as temperature, PH, current density and sodium naphthalene trisulfonate as addition agent on the hardness and internal stress. It was found that hardness increased with increasing temperature and decreasing current density and ranged from 150∼310 DPH. The hardness was highest at $55^{\circ}C$ and 10∼40 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The internal stress increased with increasing current density and decreasing temperature. It was minimum at PH 3.0∼3.8. Low internal stress within $\pm$1,500 psi was obtained at both $50^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ in 10-20 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The addition of sodium naphthalene trisulfonate was found to be effective in refine columnar grains thus resulted in decreasing internal stress, increasing hardness and improving brightness.

  • For cracked concrete, it is obvious that cracks should be preferential channel for the penetration of aggressive substances such as chloride ions according to the previous researches. In order to extend the lifetime of cracked concrete, critical issues in the performance of the concrete is the risk of chloride-induced corrosion. Even though crack width can be reduced due to the high reinforcement ratio, the question is to which extend these cracks may jeopardize the durability of cracked concrete. If the size of crack is small, surface treatment system can be considered as one of the best options to extend the service life of concrete structures exposed to marine environment simply in terms of cost effectiveness versus durability performance. Thus, it should be decided to undertake an experimental study on the effect of surface coating system, which can be able to seal the concrete and the cracks to aggressive substances-induced corrosion in particular. In this study, it is excuted to examine the effect of surfaced treated systems on chloride penetration and carbonation through compressive stress induced cracks. Experimental results have showed conclusively that critical stress linked with deterioration, should be existed in compressive stress ratio 50 ~ 70% for chloride penetration and 70 ~ 80% for carbonation, respectively. When the critical stress is exceeded in concrete, a comparatively large deterioration was measured where the critical stress in concrete, the increase in the mass transportation is marginal in spite of the large increase in micro-cracks. As for the effect of surface coating system on crack-sealing, it can be seen conclusively that cracks can be healed.

  • In this study, Al5052/CFRP composites were fabricated for an automobile component by compression molding process inside a U-channel mold. Al5052 sheet were treated by sand blasting with two different particle sizes. Accordingly, surface roughness (Ra) values of $4.25{\mu}m$ and $1.85{\mu}m$ were obtained for the treated Al5052 sheets. The effect of surface roughness of Al5052 sheets on the adhesion and mechanical properties of Al5052/CFRP composites have been evaluated. Shear lap test and 3-point bending test were conducted. Results showed that the shear load for the composite fabricated by using the treated Al5052 sheets with Ra value of $1.85{\mu}m$ and $4.25{\mu}m$ were 3 and 5 times higher than Ra value of $0.73{\mu}m$ of the composite fabricated by using the untreated sheet. The bending stress of 200MPa was obtained for the composite fabricated with untreated Al5052 sheets. The bending stress increased to 400MPa when the composite fabricated from treated sheets. However, the bending stress was not influenced by treating condition through sand blasting.

  • A stress measurement method of structural member using piezoelectric property and electrostatic voltmeter is presented. The electric potentials of the surface of the piezoelectric element, which are proportional to the strain ${\varepsilon}$ on the structural member, are measured by an electrostatic voltmeter during load cycling. The stress ${\sigma}$ is calculated by this strain ${\varepsilon}$. Moreover, a stress distribution measurement tape which can be used for the stress distribution measurement along a specified line on the surface of structural member is developed, and the surface potential was measured by an electric static voltmeter of non-contact type. The applicability of the stress distribution measurement tape is examined through experiments using a notched specimen under cyclic loading. The measured distributions of x, y and xy are compared with those calculated by FEM analysis.

  • In this paper, firstly we made of the rapid thermal processor equipment with the specifically useful structure to measure wafer stress. Secondly we made of the laser interferometry to inspect the wafer surface curvature based on the large deformation theory. And then the wafer surface fringe image was obtained by experiment, and the full field stress distribution of wafer surface comes into view by signal processing with thining and pitch mapping. After wafer was ground by 1mm and polished from the back side to get easily deformation, and it was heated by three to four times thermal treatments at about 1000 degree temperature. Finally the severe deformation between wafer before and after the heat treatment was shown.

  • Solenoid type magnetic actuator is the device, which could translate the electromagnetic energy to mechanical force. The force generated by magnetic flux, could be calculated by Maxwell stress tensor method. Maxwell stress tensor method is influenced by the magnetic flux path. Thus, magnetic force could be improved by modification of the iron case, which is the route of the magnetic flux. Modified design is obtained by parameter optimization using by Response surface methodology.

  • #140 mesh and #600 mesh wheels were adopted to grind (111) and (100) oriented single crystalline silicon wafer and the grinding induced change of the surface integrity was investigated. For this purpose, microroughness, residual stress and phase transformation were analyzed for the ground surface. Microroughness was analyzed using AFM (Atomic Force Microscope) and crystal structure was analyzed using micro-Raman spectroscopy. The residual stress and phase transformation were also analyzed after thermal annealing in the air. As a result, microroughness of (111) wafer was larger than that of (100) wafer after grinding. It was observed using Raman spectrum that the silicon was transformed from diamond cubic Si-I to Si-III(body centered tetragonal) or Si-XII(rhombohedral). Residual stress relaxation was also shown in cavities which were produced after grinding. The thermal annealing was effective for the recovery of the silicon phase to the original phase and the residual stress relaxation.
