The buoyancy effects on mixed convection heat transfer over a flat plate surface with unheated starting length is reported. The governing equations are solved by a finite difference method using Patankar scheme and the solution was numerically obtained for various mixed convection parametr $Gr_{x}/Re_{x}^3$, and Prandtl number of 0.7 Local heat flux was measured by using Schilieren Interferometer. The local heat transfer results show that the presence of the unheated starting length can significantly accentuate the effects of buoyancy. The degree of accentuation of the buoyancy effects is strongly influenced by the magnitude of $Gr_{x}/Re_{x}^3$. When the parameter is larger than the order of $10^{-3}$, the contribution of natural convection to the heat transfer coefficients increased significantly due to the unheated starting length. In contrast, when $Gr_{x}/Re_{x}^3$ is smaller then about $10^{-5}$ , the buoyancy contribution is essentially unaffected by the unheated starting length. The shape of the velocity profile is also found to be highly responsive to the interaction between the buoyancy and the starting length.
Snowmelt from seasonal snow covers can be significant in many environments of northern and alpine areas. Water flow and chemical transport resulting from snowmelt have been studied for an understanding of contributions to watersheds or catchments. A Mobile-Immobile water Model (MIM) was developed to describe the movement of ionic tracers through a snowpack by Lee et al. (2008a) and Lee et al. (2008b). To validate the model used in the studies, mass balance calculations of the model were conducted and comparisons were made between model results and analytical solutions in this work. Mass balance was calculated based on the fact that change in total mass within a snowpack with time is equal to sum of any change in the flux of water or ionic tracers into and out of the snowpack. Calculations of both water and ionic mass show almost perfect agreement between changes of two water and solute mass fluxes. Comparisons between model results and analytical solutions including wave velocity and effective saturation show almost perfect agreement.

In relation to the dust detonatians which have imposed severe damages on the industry, the ignitability of various dusts has been investigated on a horizontal shock tube in this study. By using a newly designed air injector, very well-distributed clouds could be obtained. The proper reflected shock conditions have been generated by placing a reflector 1.5cm behind the air injector, which reflected the incident shock wave. The incident shock waves in the range of Mach number 2.8-3.3 created the postreflected shock temperature of 1200-1600K. Experimentally the ignition delay was defined as the time interval between the arrival of a reflected shock wave at dusts and the detection of visible light. Measured ignition delays of dusts investigated were located lower than 1msec under the above conditions. These values are one-order higher than those in the incident shock wave condition. In this type of ignitiion process the following three processes are considered to play important roles; heating of a particle, generation of volatile gas by endothermic devolatilization process, and its diffusion from the particle surface and the formation of stoichiometric mixture with oxidizer.

Several notes on ground effects drawn from Navier-Stokes analyses and their aerodynamic interpretations were addressed here; For two-dimensional ground effect, the change of surface pressure due to image vortex, the venturi effect due to thickness and the primary inviscid flow phenomena of ground effect, and for three-dimensional ground effect, strengthened wing tip vortices, increased effective span and the outward drift of trailing vortices. Irodov's criteria were evaluated to investigate the static longitudinal stability of conventional NACA 6409 and DHMTU 8-30 airfoils. The analysis results demonstrated superior static longitudinal stability of DHMTU 8-30 airfoil. The DHMTU airfoil has quite lower value of lrodov's criterion than the conventional NACA airfoil, which require much smaller tail volume to stabilize the whole WIG-craft at its design stage.

Most of domestic shipyards are located at coastal regions which are affected by typhoons nearly every year. For effectiveness of shipbuilding, shipyards contain many facilities which are light-weighted and affected dominantly by wind. In the present paper, we analyze various wind fields over a shipyard including surrounding topology and structures to evaluate the structural safety of the facilities posed in the strong wind. Extreme wind speed for a study region was estimated by typhoon Monte Carlo simulation and then used for inlet wind speed for CFD analysis for wind load on the facilities. Considering geometrical wind effects, we assess the surface pressure of the elements as the pressure factor, the ratio of surface pressure to dynamic pressure. The results show that the simulated wind speed is greater than the design wind speed for the some facilities because of the shipyard's geometry. It also shows that surrounding topography in coastal area is needed to be considered and adjustment for design wind speed at wind load standard application is necessary for mooring ship and industry facilities.
A numerical study was performed on the transient fuel temperatures of a military aircraft stationed under non-operating static condition. Numerical calculation was peformed by an explicit method using modified Dufort-Frankel scheme. It was assumed that the non-operating aircraft is subjected to repeated daily cycles of air temperature with the solar radiation and wind speed corresponding to the 1 % hot day ambient condition. And, the aircraft was assumed to be in turbulent flow. The convective heat transfer coefficient for turbulent flow on the flat plate suggested by Eckert was employed to calculate heat transfer between the aircraft surface and the ambience. The energy conservation equation on fuel was used as governing equation for this analysis. As a result of this analysis, the wing tank temperature showed the highest temperature and the largest rate of temperature changes among fuel tanks. The results of this analysis could be used as initial foe] temperatures for analysis of the transient fuel temperatures in various flight missions. Also, this analysis method could be used to analysis and design of an aircraft thermal energy management system.
Polystyrene (PS)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites were prepared via latex technology and the effect of nanotube length on rheological properties were investigated. Monodisperse PS particle was synthesized by the emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization and two types of MWCNTs were used after surface modification to improve dispersion state and to remove impurities. Final nanocomposites were prepared by the freeze-drying process after dispersing the PS particles and the surface-modified MWCNTs in a ultrasonic bath. The effects of MWCNT content and nanotube length on rheological properties were evaluated by imposing the small-amplitude oscillatory shear flow. The PS/MWCNT nanocomposites showed that rheological properties were enhanced as the amount and length of MWCNT increased. It is speculated that the rheological characteristics of nanocomposites change from liquid-like to solid-like as the MWCNT amount increases, and the critical concentration to achieve network structure decreases as the nanotube length increases.

In a linear cascade experimental apparatus, when it adopts only few blades as well as satisfies the periodic condition between blades, it gives several advantages in experiment. In this study, wall design on a cascade experimental apparatus is conducted to obtain the periodic condition on two blades installed within a passage of which the width is double pitch. The Mach number difference on the blade surface obtained with the periodic and wall condition is chosen as an objective function, and twelve design variables which are related to the wall shape are selected. A wall shape is designed using a gradient-based optimization method. Adjustment of range and weighting function are applied to calculate the objective function to avoid unrealistic evaluation of the objective function. By applying these methods, the computed results show same flow structures obtained with the periodic condition.

In this study, steady/unsteady aerodynamic characteristic for three dimensional symmetric wing was investigated numerically using Vortex Panel Method. This program utilized linearly varying vortices in x and y directions distributed on the wing surface and was applied to the incompressible potential. flow around a three dimensional wing Separation and deformation of the wake are not considered. The comparison between NACA Airfoil Data and the computed results showed excellent agreement. πus method was applied to unsteady wings undergoing both sudden pitch-up and constant rate pitching motion. In the unsteady flow analysis, a formation and a time-dependent locations of Starting Vortices are considered and the effect of Starting Vortices on aerodynamic characteristic of the wing was calculated. The present method can be extended to apply for more complicated cases such as pitching, flapping and rotating wing analysis.

Reactive sprays of two propellant combinations(GOx/kerosene and $GN_2O$/ethanol) were observed and compared with each other as a basic research of visualizing supercritical combustion. A shadowgraph imaging method was used to visualize the reactive sprays, and shadowgraph images were converted to density gradient magnitude images to analyse the structure of reactive sprays. The gas-liquid interface of GOx/kerosene spray showed rougher boundary and steeper density gradient near the injector face than the $N_2O$/ethanol at similar combustion chamber pressure. Spray core length was calculated from averaged density gradient magnitude images and it was revealed that spray core length of GOx/kerosene was shorter than that of $GN_2O$/ethanol, although momentum flux ratio of GOx/kerosene propellant combination was lower.
