  • The instability analysis of submerged gas flow into liquid is studied, which assumes gas and liquid as viscous and irrotational. At low mass flow rate of gas, injected gas plume is collection of bubbles, and increase of gas flow rate makes plume as a jet. It is well known that the transition from bubbling to jetting occurs in the transonic region. But previous works neglect viscous effect of gas flow into liquid. This paper concerns about an application of viscous potential flow theory in cylindrical gas flow into liquid. The growth rate versus wave number and mach number is compared with various condition including inviscid and viscous flow.

  • Vortices terminating at free surface have been investigated extensively. Most of investigations, however, are focused on surface parallel vortices and little has been known about surface normal vortex or columnar vortex. Visualized experimental results utilizing LIF technique are discussed for the purpose of characterization of columnar vortex interacting with a clean and a contaminated free surfaces and a solid body interface in the present investigation. The results reveal that surface tension changes due to surface contamination although bulk viscosity remains constant and eventually the behavior of a columnar vortex interacting with a contaminated free surface and a solid body interface are totally different from the clean free surface case.

  • In this research, Rayleigh instability of gas-liquid flow in annular pipe is studied in film boiling using viscous potential flow. Viscous potential flow is a kind of approximation of gas-liquid interface considering velocity field as potential including viscosity. A dispersion relation is obtained including the effect of heat and mass transfer and viscosity. New expression for dispersion relation in film boiling and critical wave number is obtained. Viscosity and heat and mass transfer have a stabilizing effect on instability and its effect appears in maximum growth rate and critical wave number. And the existence of marginal stability region is shown.

  • In order to improve the permeability of the homogenous membrane of poly(carbobenzoxy-L-lysin)(PCLL), which has very high selectivity of helium gas to nitrogen gas, asymmetric porous membranes of PCLL were prepared by casting from 20% solutions in dioxane and dimethylformamide(DMF), respectively. The membranes were characterized by measuring the number of the pores, the pore size distribution of the surface(the skin layer) and the thickness of the skin layer by scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. The mean pore size and the pore density were lower for the membrane cast from dioxane than that from DMF, which was explained by the mechanism of the formation of the pores in the asymmetric porous membrane. The permeability coefficient observed could be roughly explained by the viscous flow through the skin layer. However, the selectivity observed was against the theory of the viscous flow.

  • For measuring friction-factor of artificially-roughened surfaces which are usually applied on damper seals, flat plate test apparatus is designed and fabricated. the measurement of leakage and pressure distribution through round-hole pattern specimen with different hole area is described and a method is discussed for determining the friction-factor experimentally. Results show that the friction-factor of the round-hole pattern surfaces is bigger than that of smooth surface and increases as increasing the hole area. A empirical friction factor model for round-hole pattern surface is defined as the Moody's friction factor formula.

  • Two-dimensional Stokes flow due to the line source and line sink of same strength in semi-infinite flow region with free surface is analysed using complex variable theory and conformal mapping. Surface tension effects are included while gravity is neglected. From the results of analysis, flow pattern and free surface shape are obtained and velocity distribution on the free surface is determined with 2 independent parameters Ca (capillary number) and h (non-dimensionalized distance between source and sink). When the location of the sink is above the source, velocity on the free surface converges and a cusp occurs on the free surface for the value of Ca above some critical capillary number.

  • In this study, we propose a method for characterizing fluid-mechanical properties of a fluid surface, such as surface dilatational and shear viscosity, by matching the flow visualization and the numerical simulation for a Stokes flow in a three-dimensional cavity. The surface flow is driven by shear stress exerted on the free surface by an external gas flow. The external gas flow is simulated by using a commercial code, while the Stokes flow is calculated by an in-house code. We have found that the surface flow is very sensitive to the surface tension and other properties. The qualitative feature of the surface flow can be reproduced by the parameter tuning.
