Sandwich composites of carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP) and polymer foam will be used to automobile and aerospace industry according to increasing importance of light weight. In this study, mechanical and heat resistance properties of sandwich composites were compared with type of polymer foam (polyethylene terephthalate(PET), polyvinylchloride(PVC), epoxy and polyurethane). All types of polymer foams were degraded to 30, 60, 120, 180 minutes in $180^{\circ}C$. After heat degradation, the polymer foams were observed using optical microscope and compressive test was performed using universal testing machine(UTM). Epoxy foam had the highest compressive property to 2.6 MPa and after thermal degradation, the mechanical property and structure of foam were less changed than others. Epoxy foam had better mechanical properties than other polymer foams under high temperature. Because the epoxy foam was post cured under high temperature. As the results, Epoxy foam was optimal materials to apply to structures that thermal energy was loaded constantly.
An objective of this study is to develop a polyurethane foam(PUF) maintaining its mechanical strength at room temperature as well as at extremely low temperature. The effect of temperature on the physical properties of PUF with the increase in polyol functionality was investigated. At room and cryogenic temperature, compressive strengths of the PUFs increased up to 70% and 30% with an increase in polyol functionality, respectively. At room temperature tensile strength of PUFs tends to increase as functionality of polyol increases, however, the strength at $-190^{\circ}C$ shows different tendency. Compressive strength of PUF is higher in cryogenic temperature than in room temperature. However, as the number of polyol functionality become more than 4, tensile strength of PUF is lower in cryogenic temperature than in room temperature.
The effect of additives on the mechanical properties of polyurethane foam were investigated. The resin used in this study was prepared by adding catalyst, surfactant and cross-linker to both KONIX FA-703 polyether polyol(80%) and KONIX FA-733 polyether polyol(20%). The polyurethane was foamed by adding equivalent amount of isocyanate(TDI-80, prepolymer M-200, pure MDI) to the resin and was used in property measurements after 72 hours hardening. The physical properties of polyurethane foam were investigated in terms of density, tensile strength, tear strength, elongation, sound absorption coefficient and gel profile measurements. The effects of surfactant on the cell size was investigated by scanning electron microscopy(SEM). The sound absorption coefficient was directly related to the cell size. The physical properties were improved with increasing amount of surfactant(L-5309) until 1.0 part per hundred polyol(1.0pphp).
Rigid polyurethane foam (PUF) was synthesized with different contents of aliphatic polyester polyol, aromatic polyester polyol and aliphatic polyether polyol to know change of properties under sea water. UTM(universal testing machine), DSC(differential scanning calorimetry), hardness meter and FT-IR(Fourier transform spectroscopy) were used to study the PUF`s physical properties under sea water. Compressive strength and hardness of PUF decreased with increasing the content of aromatic polyester polyol under sea water as aging. According to the results of IR spectral analysis, reduction of urethane and urea peak was found and allophanate and biuret peak increased. Although glass transition temperature of PUF increased, mechanical properties of PUF decreased under sea water, because PUF gets brittle when crosslink density increase.

Polyurethane foams are polymeric material with repeating groups of urethane and urea. When these are heated with ethylene glycol and K acetate catalyst at $200^{\circ}C$, the transesterification of them leads to soluble products. The mechanisms of the reaction were investigated from the molecular weight and the component distributions of the products by GPC and IR analysis. The degradation of the urethane groups was faster than that of urea groups in transesterification reaction. K acetate catalyst accelerated the rate of the transesterification because it had a high ionization tendency. Each reaction, using K or Sr acetate as a catalyst, progressed in the same reaction path but yielded different compositions in products because of the difference of the reaction rate.
In this study, we compared and analyzed the flame retardancy and mechanical properties of three different rigid polyurethane foams (RPUF) containing noble non-halogen phosphorus flame retardant (BHP-RPUF) or halogen-phosphorus flame retardant (TCPP-RPUF) or no flame retardant material (Pure-RPUF). The noble phosphorus-based flame retardant, bis(3-(3-hydroxypropoxy)propyl) phenyl phosphate (BHP), was synthesized by the reaction between disodium phenyl phosphate and 3-chloro-1-propanol. Through universal testing machine (UTM) experiments, the compressive strength of BHP-RPUF was similar to that of TCPP-RPUF. From the result of foam morphology analysis, it was confirmed that BHP-RPUF has the lowest thermal conductivity of $0.023W/m{\cdot}K$. We also measured the size of air bubbles using reaction velocity and SEM, and analyzed how they affect the thermal conductivity. In addition, the heat-resisting property was investigated through TGA analysis. The limited oxygen index (LOI) test confirmed that BHP had the ability to increase the flame retardancy of RPUF.

Polyurethane foam index a of the cell structure and the absorption change by using the foam stabilizer of six to investigate the polyurethane foam index producing the agent to the siloxane analyzed with silicon foam stabilizer with FE-SEM in accordance with the characteristics of the silicon-based foam stabilizer cell structure of the primary DC-193 on the chain ends is PO n dog bond, DC-2585, DC-5125, DC-198 has been confirmed as a close cell, silicone surfactant is combined EO n dog to a siloxane main chain terminus DC-5043 and DC-5598 that appeared to open cell structure. In addition, most absorption of the DC-5043 appeared was the size of the open cell greatest formed by the absorption of the cell structure change this absorption of the size of the close cell most detailed and uniform DC-193 appeared small household water-resistant best many showed. The performance test of the water was found to be excellent.
To improve mechanical strength of carbon foams, the carbon black (CB) added carbon foams were fabricated by impregnating different contents of carbon black (CB) and mesophase pitch using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution into polyurethane foam and being followed by heat treatment. The cell wall-thicknesses of carbon foams were controlled by adding amounts of CB, and it was confirmed that the compressive strength of carbon foams was increased as increasing cell wall-thickness. The compressive strength had the highest value of $0.22{\pm}0.05MPa$ with the highest bulk density of $0.44g/cm^3$ when adding 5 wt% CB in carbon foam. However, the thermal conductivity was decreased by adding CB in carbon foam. The results indicated that the thermal conductivities of carbon foams were reduced by increased interlayer spacing ($d_{002}$) with the addition of CB in carbon foams.
