  • For low-smoke-type polyolefin compound, LDPE, EVA, and EEA as base resin, magnesium trihydrate, alumina trihydrate, and red phosphorous as flame retardant and MAH type compatibilizer were applied. The amount of each component was changed to find out optimum composition. Mechanical properties were obtained by tensile test and residual stress after aging and flame retardancy was evaluated by smoke density, LOI(Limit Oxygen Index), and UL-94 test. SEM was used for the investigation or morphology and halogen contents were obtained by measuring the amount of HCI. Two kinds of halogen free compositions for flame retardant and low smote resin were found and it is expected to be applied for various purposes.

  • Polypropylene (PP) has been received great attention as a next-generation high-voltage power cable insulation material that can replace cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE). However, the PP cannot be used alone as an insulation material because of its high elastic modulus and vulnerability to impact, and thus is mainly utilized as a form of a copolymer with rubber phases included in the polymerization step. In this paper, a soft PP-based blend was prepared through melt-mixing of impact PP, polyolefin elastomer, and propylene-ethylene random copolymer. The elastic modulus and impact strength of the blend could properly be decreased or increased, respectively, by introducing elastomeric phases. Furthermore, the blends showed a high storage modulus even at a temperature of 100℃ or higher at which the XLPE loses its mechanical properties. In addition, the blend was found to be effective in suppressing the space charge compared to the pristine PP as well as XLPE.

  • Polyalphaolefin (PAO) is a synthetic lubricant that is superior to mineral-based lubricants in terms of physical and chemical characteristics such as low pour point (PP), and high viscosity index (VI). This paper first reports a novel preparation route for a synthetic lubricant via alkylation of isoparaffins using a peroxide initiator without olefin. Alkylation of three kinds of isoparaffins such as i-$C_{16}$, i-$C_{18}$, and i-$C_{23}$ as well as alkylation of i-$C_{18}$ with 2-pentene using di-tert butyl peroxide initiator were conducted under various conditions to confirm alkylation reaction from isoparaffins themselves i.e; Single-molecule alkylation. Various properties of each alkylates (VI and PP) were investigated as a synthetic lubricant. Single-molecule alkylation made from i-$C_{16}$ a,nd i-$C_{18}$ showed ultra high VI (>140) and low PP (< $-30^{\circ}C$).

  • Phenolic antioxidants are effective stabilizers that provide excellent long-term heat stability by preventing thermo-oxidative degradation during processing and service life. However, under a selected set of circumstances, certain types of phenolics have been susceptible to discoloration due to prolonged storage in an environment containing oxides of nitrogen. It is investigated that the effect of addition of secondary antioxidant and chemical structure of primary antioxidant on discoloration of amorphous poly-${\alpha}$-olefin (APAO), which is especially prone to be decomposed in high processing temperature. From the result, it is concluded that a higher level of steric hindrance of phenolic antioxidant provided by long alkyl chain allows a more enhanced synergic effect with secondary antioxidant.

  • Separation of ethylene from ethane and propylene from propane have been conducted using facilitated olefin transport membrane with SPEEK-Ag (Ag substituted sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone)). SPEEK was prepared by the sulfonation of PEEK using cone. $H_2SO_4$ and the reaction time affected the degree of sulfonation (DS) of the resulting SPEEK. SPEEK-Ag composite membrane was formed by soaking SPEEK in the polyester support into the Ag salt solution. With increasing the concentration of SPEEK in MeOH, the thickness of SPEEK on the polyester increased. The selectivity and the flux of SPEEK-Ag membrane for the separation of ethylene/ethane and propylene/propane were changed by the thickness of SPEEK layer on the top of polyester support. The anion of silver salt also affects the membrane performance.

  • The physical characteristics of polymer modified asphalt depend on many parameters, such as, the polymer nature, polymer content and the asphalt properties. The objective of this study is to investigate the temperature susceptibility of polymer modified asphalt. The asphalts employed in this study were two different grades : a soft(200/300) grade and a hard(85/100) grade. And chlorinated polyethylene of two different characteristics were used : plastomer(Tyrin 2552) and elastomer(Tyrin CM0730). Temperature susceptibility of asphalt is a fundamental feature for characterizing asphalt and modified asphalt. It can be quantified by the penetration index(PI) and pen-vis number(PVN). These indices were obtained from the measurements of penetration and viscosity of the asphalt samples. For both of asphalts, the addition of the polymers increases the value of PI and PVN. Plastomer modified asphalt shows higher value of PI and PVN than elastomer modified asphalt. Soft grade shows more temperature susceptibility than hard grade at elevated temperatures.

  • Effect of amount of red mud and processing method on the tensile and impact properties of polymers were investigated when the red mud was added as a filler to polypropylene (PP), low density polyethylene (LDPE) and PP/LDPE blend. Especially in case of PP, increase in the tensile strength, elongation at break and absorbed energy was observed when extrusion was carried out more than two times. Tensile strength showed a very remarkable increase when master batch was used in comparison with simple multiple extrusion. In case of LDPE, 10% addition of red mud resulted in the increase of tensile modulus and impact strength, while 20% addition caused a decrease in the same properties. Addition of 5% EVA could reverse this trend. Addition of 20% red mud to PP/LDPE blend gave a decrease in impact strength but 5% EPR compatibilizer could improve the impact properties. Above results showed that the processing method is a very important factor in the utilization of red mud as a plastic fillers and master batch is one of the very effective way of red mud addition.

  • We develop a ceramic composite separator prepared by coating $ZrO_2$ nanoparticles with a poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP) copolymer on a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) mechanical support prepared by electrospinning technique to improve thermal properties. The gurley number of the ceramic composite separator shows much lower value than that of a PE separator even though it possesses the polymeric coating layer with ceramic nanoparticles. In addition, the proposed sample shows higher electrolyte uptake than PE separator, leading to enhancing the ionic conductivity of the proposed sample and, by extension, the rate discharge properties of lithium ion batteries. Thermal stability of the ceramic composite separator is dramatically improved without any degradation in electrochemical performance compared to the performance of conventional PE separators.

  • The mort commonly available substrate material is glass in the display fibrication process. However, glass is not desirable due to its heaviness and fragility. Recently, plastics such polysulfone (PSF), polyethesulfone (PES), polycarbonate (PC), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and cyclic olefin polymers (COP) have been investigated to replace glass as a substrate material for display fibrication. Plastic substrates are advantageous in that they are lightweight, huh impart resistance, flexibility, and ability for roll to roll manufacturing process. But many plastics have poor chemical resistance in organic solvent. The chemica resistance is also lequired because they are exposed to solvents for various chemical treatments din the manufacturing process. So, we have an interest in the chemical modification of PSF to improve chemical resistance. We introduced crosslinkable imide moieties using chloromethylation method for the modification of PSF which could be overcome above shortcomings for display substrate based on plastic film. We prepared the cross-linked polysulfone films which were represented chemical resistance in HeOH, THF, DMSO and NMP. The thermal properties were measured by TGA, DSC and TMA. As the results, we have confirmed to enhance of the thermal property. They had low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) which decreased to 15% and had increased $T_g\;from\;180^{\circ}C\;to\;252^{\circ}C$. Cross-linked polysulfone films with imide side-chain had good optical properties and chemical resistance so that they could be used as flexible display substrate.

  • The morphological properties of four binary blends of polyethylene synthesized by metallocene catalyst(MCPE) and four polyolefins prepared by Ziegler-Natta catalyst have been investigated to interpret the effect of micro-molecular structure on the phase morphology and interfacial behavior; four binary blend systems studied are high density polyethylene(HDPE)-metallocene polyethylene (MCPE), polypropylene(PP)-MCPE, poly(propylene-co-ethylene) (CoPP)-MCPE, and poly(propylene-co-ethylene-co-1-butylene) (TerPP)-MCPE, and they are all phase separated. The HDPE-MCPE blend shows evenly growing homogeneous HDPE domain on the continuous MCPE phase, on the other hand, the rest of three blends show complex heterogeneous phase behavior. The PP-MCPE blend shows that PP and MCPE and completely phase separated and phase inversion takes place at 50% MCPE. The CoPP-MCPE and TerPP-MCPE show enhanced interface due to the same micro-molecular structure of ethylene, and phase inversion takes place at 40% MCPE. In particular, TerPP-MCPE blend shows improved phase morphology between interfaces, and this may be arisen from the comonomer contents in TerPP, which are 1-butene and ethylene having the same chemical structure as that of MCPE. The enhancement of the phase morphology in the TerPP-MCPE blend is correlated with the mechanical and morphological properties. Thus, although the four blend systems are phase separated, the phase morphology suggests that the order of interfacial adhesion strength be HDPE-MCPE > TerPP-MCPE > CoPP-MCPE > PP-MCPE and that micro-molecular structure between constituents be one of major factors giving enhanced interfacial adhesion.
