  • Nylon, Polyacetal and PTFE were studied to gain a better understanding of their tribological behavior. Wear tests were conducted with reciprocating motion under dry sliding conditions. Friction coefficient and specific wear rate were measured as a function of sliding distance. The worn surfaces were examined with a Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM). Polyacetal showed lowest specific wear rates and PTFE exhibited lowest friction coefficient. The dominant wear mechanism found were adhesion and abrasion.

  • In order to evaluate variation of fatigue life of mechanical components including engineering plastics, it is important to estimate probabilistic strain-life curves to accurately define the variation of fatigue characteristics. This paper intends to provide new assessment of P-$\varepsilon$-N (probabilistic strain-life curves) for considering the variation of fatigue characteristics in polyacetal. The fatigue strain controlled tests were conducted under constant 50% humidity and room temperature condition by a universal testing machine at strain ratio, R=0. A practical procedure is introduced to evaluate probabilistic strain-life curves. Three probabilistic distributions were used for generating P-$\varepsilon$-N curves such as normal, 2-parameter and 3-parameter Weibull. In this study, 3-parameter Weibull distribution was found to be most appropriate among assumed distributions when the probability distributions of the fatigue characteristic were examined using chi-square and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The more appropriate P-$\varepsilon$-N curves for these materials are generated by the proposed method considering 3-parameter Weibull distribution.

  • Poly (vinyl butyral) (PVB) was synthesized by acetalization of poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) PVB was prepared in particulate forms in water, and chemical and physical properties of the products were characterized using various techniques. The prepared PVB had size distribution from 100 to 700 $\mu\textrm{m}$ with mean diameter of about 380 $\mu\textrm{m}$. The chemical structure of PVB was characterized using FT/IR and NMR, and the average degree of acetalization was determined to be 77% from the titration measurement. DSC data showed that the crystalline structure of PVA vanished as acetalization reaction proceeded to produce PVB, and the glass transition temperature emerged at about $70^{\circ}C$. TGA data showed that PVB was much more thermally stable than PVA, and showed no degradation up to $300^{\circ}C$. Solubility test showed that PVB was soluble in alcohols but Insoluble in water, being totally different from PVA.

  • Friction and wear test have been performed on nylon, polyacetal, and PTFE(polytetrafluoroethylene), in reciprocating dry sliding conditions against a steel disc. According to the results, polyacetal show lowest wear rates and PTFE was found to exhibit lowest friction coefficient. The prominent wear mechanism found were adhesion and abrasion.

  • Polyacetals with melamine were investigated in terms of mechanical properties. It was found that tensile strength, impact strength and elongation were decreased with the increase of melamine content up to 30 par, flexural strength had no remarkable changes. For master-batch using polyurethane as carrier resin, in which the ratio of polyurethane to melamine was 2:1, tensile strength and flexural strength were decreased and impact strength remained unchanged with melamine me content.

  • Polyacetal resin is usually used to make molds, but it is difficult to achieve dimension accuracy during molding. Therefore it is usually necessary to cut the polyacetal resin after a molding process. Polyacetal resin is easily machining by standard machine tool. Acetal is also a thermal stable material which can be totted without coolant Another concern about the use of polyacetal resin is that it absorbs water easily, which also results in problems with dimension accuracy Therefore, in this study, the cutting resistance of water-absorbed polyacetal resin and its surface roughness after cutting in order to achieve the highest degree of accuracy in the cutting of polyacetal resin were investigated. Also, The Robust Design method uses a mathematical tool called orthogonal arrays to study a large number of decision variables with a small number of experiments. It also uses a new measure of quality, called signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio, to predict the quality from the customer's perspective. Thus, we have taken Taguchi's parameter design approach, specifically orthogonal array, and determined the optimal levels of the selected variables through analysis of the experimental results using S/N ratio.

  • A pair of connectors for transferring torque is widely used in various types of a mechanical system. By the repetition of mechanical contact between a pair of connector, wear occurs easily. This kind of defect sometimes can cause a serious problem of health in case of the connector is used in a refrigerator. In this work, the material combination of connectors was experimentally studied to reduce the amount of wear; for the combination of connectors, various types of engineering materials including polyacetal, polycabonate, stainless steel (STS-304), NiP coated STS-304, and STS-310 were evaluated to check each wear behavior. Also an effective method of wear test was suggested for precise controlling of wear conditions such as contact area, contact force, and relative motion speed. From the test results, it was found out that a pair of polyacetal to STS-304 and STS-310 showed the lowest specific wear rates among other pairs.

  • Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets have been successfully used to retrofit a number of existing concrete buildings and structures because of their excellent properties (high strength, light weight and high durability). Bond characteristics between FRP sheets and concrete should be investigated to ensure an effective retrofitting system. RC structures strengthened with FRP sheets are often subjected to cyclic load (traffic, seismic, temperature, etc.). This research addresses a local bond stress-slip relationship under cyclic loading conditions for the FRP-concrete interface. 18 specimens were prepared with three types of FRP sheets (aramid, carbon, and polyacetal) and two types of sheet layer(one or two). The characteristics of bond stress-slip were verified through experimental results on load-displacement relationship.

  • The industrial safety helmets are personal protective equipment (PPE), used to protect the head against falls from a height. This study indicated the necessity of wearing a safety helmet while working at heights below 4 m, through analysis of fall accidents occurring in the industrial field. The stress, displacement, and strain of the safety helmet shell structure have been analyzed using the finite element method with various thicknesses, engineering plastics, and designs. It was preferred that the safety helmet shell structure had a reinforcement frame of uniform thickness in terms of increased impact strength and strain energy absorption rate. The thickness can be reduced to lighten the total weight for workers wearing safety helmets.
