The impact strength and fracture behavior of rubber/polymer composites were investigated with respect to two factors: (i) characteristic ratio, $C_{\infty}$ as a measure of chain flexibility of the polymer matrix and (ii) the rubber particle size in polymer blend system. In this study C was controlled by the composition ratio of polyphenylene oxide (PPO) and polystyene (PS). Izod impact test and fractographic observation of the fracture surface using scanning electron microscope were conducted. Finite element analysis were carried out to gain understanding of plastic deformation mechanism (shear yielding and crazing) of these materials. Shear yielding was found to be enhanced when the flexibility of matrix polymer was relatively low and the rubber particles were small.

In recent years there has been a growing interest for the use of natural fibers in composite applications due to their low cost, environmental friendliness, and good mechanical properties. The purpose of this study is to determine the characteristic of bending strength on bamboo fiber reinforced polymer composites. The parameters of RTM process depend on the weight ratio of bamboo fiber and resin, the number of bamboo ply and amount of hardening agent. Besides the existence of pore in composites according to vacuum time investigated a effect on mechanical properties of reinforced polymer composites. Test result shows that compressive strength was a maximum(approximately 1,840kgf/$cm^2$) value when weight ratio of resin was 12%.
In this work, two types of Ni-plating, namely electrolytical and electroless Ni-platings on carbon fiber surfaces, were carried out to enhance the impact resistance of composites. And the comparison between electrolytical and electroless methods on their impact properties of composite system was studied. The surface properties of carbon fibers were characterized using XRD, SEM, and contact angle measurements. The impact behaviors were investigated using an Izod type impact tester. As experimental results, it was observed that electrolessly plated Ni layers had Ni-P alloys on carbon fiber surfaces as revealed by XRD, and electrolytically Ni-plated carbon fibers showed higher surface free energies than those of the electrolessly Ni-plated carbon fibers. In particular, the impact strengths of electrolessly Ni-plated carbon fibers-reinforced plastics were strongly increased. These results were probably due to the difference of wettabilities according to the different types of Ni-plating methods.
To improve the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites, laminated composites plates were fabricated using different matrix resins and glass or aramid fibers. The effect of matrix resin system were evaluated by tensile, flexural strength measurements. In the case of surface treated aramid fiber and unsaturated polyester resin composite, maximum flexural properties were observed in the composite prepared from the glass fiber treated with 0.5 wt% silane coupling agents. Vinylester resin composites show the highest tensile properties and isophthalic polyester composites have the highest flexural properties among the unsaturated polyester resin composites studied. The relationship between overlap laminated composites plates and mechanical properties of polymer composites is also investigated in order to improve mechanical properties of glass fiber and unsaturated polyester resin composites.

Owing to the global energy crisis, studies have strongly focused on realizing energy savings through vehicle weight reduction using light metal alloys or polymer composites. Polymer composites afford many advantages including enabling the fabrication of complex shapes by injection molding, and glass and carbon fibers offer improved mechanical properties. However, the high temperature in an engine room and the high humidity during the rainy season can degrade the mechanical properties of the polymer. In this study, the mechanical properties of injection-molded glass-fiber-reinforced polymer were assessed at a temperature of $85^{\circ}C$ and the maximum moisture absorption conditions. The result showed a 23% reduction in the maximum tensile strength under high temperature, 30% reduction under maximum moisture absorption, and 70% reduction under both heat and moisture conditions. For material selection during the design process, the effects of high temperature and high humidity should be considered.

The demand for cold-resistant cable material is increasing due to the rapid increase in the development of devices that operate in a low temperature environment. Cold tolerance of a thermoplastic polymer largely depends on the type and content of about 20 or more additives used to make the polymer. The phenomenon of polymer hardening at low temperature can be classified into hardening by simple temperature effect, embrittlement at the glass transition temperature, and hardening by crystallization of polymers that tend to crystallize. In this study, a thermoplastic polymer having a low glass transition temperature, a flame retardant, and an additive were mixed to evaluate the mechanical properties of a thermoplastic polymer composite material for electric wires. It has been confirmed that mechanical properties and processability are determined depending on the additives and compatibilizers added, and this study is considered to be useful as basic data for optimization to meet the performance requirements of wires developed for low-temperature use.
Nondestructive damage sensitivity of carbon nanotube(CNT) and nanofiber (CNF)/epoxy composites with their adding contents was investigated using electro-micromechanical technique. Carbon black (CB) was used only for the comparison with CNT and CNF. The fracture of carbon fiber was detected by acoustic emission (AE), which was correlated to the change in electrical resistance, ΔR under double-matrix composites (DMC) test. Stress sensing on carbon nanocomposites was performed by electro-pullout test under uniform cyclic loading. At the same volume fraction, the damage sensitivity for fiber fracture, matrix deformation and stress sensing were highest for CNT/epoxy composite, whereas for CB/epoxy composite they were the lowest among three carbon nanomaterials (CNMs). Damage sensitivity was correlated with morphological observation of carbon nanocomposites. Homogeneous dispersion among CNMs could be keying parameters for better damage monitoring. In this study, damage sensing of carbon nanocomposites could be evaluated well nondestructively by the electrical resistance measurement with AE.
Interfacial evaluation, damage sensing and cure monitoring of single carbon fiber/thermo setting composite with different curing processes were investigated using electro-micromechanical test. After curing, the residual stress was monitored by measurement of electrical resistance and then compared to various curing processes. In thermal curing case, matrix tensile strength, modulus and interfacial shear strength were higher than those of ultraviolet curing case. The shrinkage measured during thermal curing occurred significantly by matrix shrinkage and residual stress due to the difference in thermal expansion coefficient. The apparent modulus measured in the thermal curing indicated that mechanical and interfacial properties were highly improved. The reaching time to the same stress of thermal curing was faster than that of UV curing case.

Mechanical properties was investigated for each process factor of polymer composites. Test result shows that bending strength was a maximum(approximately 85MPa) value when composite thickness was 6mm and weight ratio of resin was 13%.
In this work, the electro-magnetic interference (EMI) characteristics of PAN-based carbon fibers-reinforced composites are investigated with difference to manufactural parameters, i.e., fiber grade, fiber orientation angle, and laminating method. As a result, EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of the composites greatly depends on a fiber orientation in composite angle. Especially, the fiber grade affects SE of composites in case of orientation angle of 0$^{\circ}$. Then the SE become greater as the change of electric character according to the arrangement directions, i.e., electrical anisotropy in the same constituent materials. This is due to the skin effect which is represented in the surface of electro-magnetic wave in high-frequency range. In all cases according to lamination methods, the composites represents SE of 83~98% over. Whereas, in symmetric and unsymmetric laminate structures, the SE decreases slightly as the laminate angles of composites increases. On the contrary. the repeating laminates structure shows the opposite tendency. Especially, 90$^{\circ}$ repeating laminate structure shows the SE more than 90% over the measuring frequency.
