This study evaluates potential sources of errors in k-NN(k-nearest neighbor) algorithm such as procedures, variables, and input data. Previous research has been thoroughly reviewed for understanding fundamentals of k-NN algorithm that has been widely used for short-term traffic states prediction. The framework of this algorithm commonly includes historical data smoothing, pattern database, similarity measure, k-value, and prediction horizon. The outcomes of this study suggests that: i) historical data smoothing is recommended to reduce random noise of measured traffic data; ii) the historical database should contain traffic state information on both normal and event conditions; and iii) trial and error method can improve the prediction accuracy by better searching for the optimum input time series and k-value. The study results also demonstrates that predicted error increases with the duration of prediction horizon and rapidly changing traffic states.

This paper proposes three methods for improving the accuracy of auto-music transcription considering with time-varying tempo from monophonic sound. The first one that uses TV(Total Variation) filter for smoothing the pitch data reduces the fragmentation in the pitch segmentation result. Also, the measure finding method that combines three different ways based on pitch and energy of sound data, respectively as well as based on rules produces more stable result. In addition the temporal result of note-length encoding is corrected in optimal way that the resulted encoding minimizes the sum of quantization error in a measure while the sum of note-lengths is equal to the number of beats. In the experiment with 16 children songs, we obtained the improved result in which measure finding was complete, the accuracy of encoding for note-length and pitch was about 91.3 and 86.7, respectively.
The holistic inversion approach for frequency domain airborne electromagnetic data has previously been employed to simultaneously calibrate, process and invert raw frequency-domain data where prior information was available. Analternative formulation has been developed, which is suitable in the case where explicit prior information is not available. It incorporates: a multi-layer vertically-smooth conductivity model; a simplified bias parameterisation; horizontal smoothing with respect to elevation; and cluster computer parallelisation. Without using any prior data, an inversion of 8.0 million data for 3.4 million parameters yields results that are consistent with independently derived calibration parameters, downhole logs and groundwater elevation data. We conclude that the success of the holistic inversion method is not dependent on a sophisticated conceptual model or the direct inclusion of survey-area specific prior information. In addition, acquisition costs could potentially be reduced by employing the holistic approach which largely eliminates the need for high altitude zero-level measurements.

This paper presents a novel de-interlacing algorithm that can make up motion compensation errors by using maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimator. First, a proper registration is performed between a current field and its adjacent fields, and the progressive frame corresponding to the current field is found via MAP estimator based on the computed registration information. Here, in order to obtain a stable solution, well-known bilateral total variation (BTV)-based regularization is employed. Next, so-called feathering artifacts are detected on a block basis effectively. So, edge-directional interpolation is applied to the pixels where feathering artifact may happen, instead of the above-mentioned temporal de-interlacing. Experimental results show that the PSNR of the proposed algorithm is on average 4dB higher than that of previous studies and provides the better subjective quality than the previous works.
The resistivity monitoring is a practical method to resolve changes in resistivity of underground structures over time. With the advance of sophisticated automatic data acquisition system and rapid data communication technology, resistivity monitoring has been widely applied to understand spatio-temporal changes of subsurface. In this study, a new 4D inversion algorithm is developed, which can effectively emphasize significant changes of underground resistivity with time. To overcome the overly smoothing problem in 4D inversion, the Lagrangian multipliers in the space-domain and time-domain are determined automatically so that the proportion of the model constraints to the misfit roughness remains constant throughout entire inversion process. Furthermore, a focusing model constraint is added to emphasize significant spatio-temporal changes. The performance of the developed algorithm is demonstrated by the numerical experiments using the synthetic data set for a time-lapse model.

This paper analyzed MODIS data from 2006 to 2013 to determine relationship between meteorological changes and vegetation index. The experimental area was divided into the northern, central and southern regions according to the regional characteristics, and the smoothed MODIS LAI and NDVI were obtained using Timesat. In the case of precipitation, MODIS NDVI had correlation coefficients of 0.66, 0.44 and 0.35 in the northern, central and southern regions and the correlation was the highest in the northern region. In the case of temperature, MODIS LAI had correlation coefficients of 0.66, 0.64 and 0.68, and MODIS NDVI had 0.89, 0.89 and 0.80. The correlation of MODIS NDVI was higher and showed similar positive correlation regardless of region. In addition, The accuracy between Timesat plant seasonal start and actual plant seasonal start in MODIS NDVI was higher than MODIS LAI. The average error in MODIS LAI was 19 days in the central region and 20 days in the southern region. And the average error in MODIS NDVI was 6 days in the central region and 8 days in the southern region.
This paper proposes a novel contrast enhancement (CE) algorithm for color images using the modified error diffusion (ED). After conventional color histogram equalization (HE), artifacts such as false contours are produced in the contrast enhanced image. The proposed CE algorithm using the modified ED consists of two parts: CE and ED. In the first part, a low-contrast input image is enhanced by the conventional HE method. In the second part, we use the modified ED algorithm. The inputs of the second part are the average and scaled difference images of the original color input image and the HE image, in which the scaled color difference image is diffused by the ED algorithm. In the proposed algorithm, the modified ED algorithm reduces the artifacts produced in the HE image, and increases the number of color levels. Computer simulations with a number of low-contrast color images show the effectiveness of the proposed CE method in terms of the visual quality as well as the probability mass function. It can be used as a post-processing for CE with simultaneous artifact reduction in various display devices.

In this paper, we propose a service method that can provide insight into multi-source agricultural data, way to cluster environmental factor which supports data analysis according to time flow, and curate crop environmental factors. The proposed curation service consists of four steps: collection, preprocessing, storage, and analysis. First, in the collection step, the service system collects and organizes multi-source agricultural data by using an OpenAPI-based web crawler. Second, in the preprocessing step, the system performs data smoothing to reduce the data measurement errors. Here, we adopt the smoothing method for each type of facility in consideration of the error rate according to facility characteristics such as greenhouses and open fields. Third, in the storage step, an agricultural data integration schema and Hadoop HDFS-based storage structure are proposed for large-scale agricultural data. Finally, in the analysis step, the service system performs DTW-based time series classification in consideration of the characteristics of agricultural digital data. Through the DTW-based classification, the accuracy of prediction results is improved by reflecting the characteristics of time series data without any loss. As a future work, we plan to implement the proposed service method and apply it to the smart farm greenhouse for testing and verification.
Due to recent changes in government policy, officetels have received attention as alternative assets, along with the uplift of office and apartment prices in Seoul. However, the current officetel price indexes use small-size samples and, thus, there is a critique on their accuracy. They rely on valuation prices which lag the market trend and do not properly reflect the volatile nature of the property market, resulting in 'smoothing'. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to create the officetel price index using transaction data. The data, provided by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport from 2005 to 2020, includes sales prices and rental prices - Jeonsei and monthly rent (and their combinations). This study employed a repeat sales model for sales, jeonsei, and monthly rent indexes. It also contributes to improving conversion rates (between deposit and monthly rent) as a supplementary indicator. The main findings are as follows. First, the officetel price index and jeonsei index reached 132.5P and 163.9P, respectively, in Q4 2020 (1Q 2011=100.0P). However, the rent index was approximately below 100.0. Sales prices and jeonsei continued to rise due to high demand while monthly rent was largely unchanged due to vacancy risk. Second, the increase in the officetel sales price was lower than other housing types such as apartments and villas. Third, the employed approach has seen a potential to produce more reliable officetel price indexes reflecting high volatility compared to those indexes produced by other institutions, contributing to resolving 'smoothing'. As seen in the application in Seoul, this approach can enhance accuracy and, therefore, better assist market players to understand the market trend, which is much valuable under great uncertainties such as COVID-19 environments.
As the threat of natural disasters such as droughts, floods, forest fires, and landslides increases due to climate change, social demand for high-resolution soil moisture retrieval, such as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), is also increasing. However, the domestic environment has a high proportion of mountainous topography, making it challenging to retrieve soil moisture from SAR data. This study evaluated the usability of Sentinel-1 SAR, which is applied with the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) technique, to retrieve soil moisture. It was confirmed that the backscattering coefficient obtained from Sentinel-1 significantly correlated with soil moisture behavior, and the possibility of stand-alone use to correct vegetation effects without using auxiliary data observed from other satellites or observatories. However, there was a large difference in the characteristics of each site and topographic group. In particular, when the model learned on the mountain and at flat land cross-applied, the soil moisture could not be properly simulated. In addition, when the number of learning points was increased to solve this problem, the soil moisture retrieval model was smoothed. As a result, the overall correlation coefficient of all sites improved, but errors at individual sites gradually increased. Therefore, systematic research must be conducted in order to widely apply high-resolution SAR soil moisture data. It is expected that it can be effectively used in various fields if the scope of learning sites and application targets are specifically limited.
