In this paper, a system of falling weight impact tester was built up to evaluate the impact energy absorbing characteristics and impact strength of CFRP laminate plates in consideration of stress wave propagation theory. Delamination area of impacted specimens for the different ply orientation was measured with ultrasonic C-scanner to find correlation between impact energy and delamination area. Absorbed energy of quasi-isotropic specimen having four interfaces was higher than that of orthotropic laminates with two interfaces. The more interfaces, the more absorbed energy. Hybrid specimen containing GFRP layer was higher than that of normal specimens.

Electronic speckle pattern interferometry(ESPI) using a CW laser, a video system and an image processor were applied to the in-plane displacement measurements. Unlike traditional strain gauges or Moire method, ESPI method requires no special surface preparation or attachments and it can be measured in-plane displacement without any contact and real time. In this experiment, specimen was loaded in paralled with a loa cell. The specimen was plance to which strain gauges was attached. The study provides an example of how ESPI have been used to measure displacement and strain distribution in this specimen. The results measured by ESPI were compared with the data which were measured by strain gauge method in tensile testing.
This study investigates the bending stress, shear stress and deformation energy happening at the inner fiber structure when the bending moment is applied to he specimen with flat shape composed of carbon fiber. As CFRP is composed of innumerable fibers with multi-axes, the stress under bending condition can be effectively distributed. Theses stresses is shown to increase again at the starting point as this angle of $60^{\circ}$. Therefore, the condition at the stacking angle of $60^{\circ}$ is seen to become most adequate under the state where the bending stress happens. On the basis of this study result, the damage property by the bending at the plate due to stacking angle was examined through the analytic approach. it is thought that this study can be devoted to the safe design for damage prevention and durabilty improvement. Also, the esthetic sense can be shown as the designed factor of shape with flat plate is grafted onto the convergence technique.
In the first part of the paper, the crack growth process in rolling contact fatigue has been investigated on ring type plate specimens, in which crack growth is two dimensional and cracks are observed on the side surface of the specimens. The results have shown that cracks are initated from the contact surface in tensile mode in the direction approximately normal to the contact surface and after some short length of growth, shear mode growth occurs from the tip of the crack and it grows until the separation of the surface layer, namely flakung type failure, occurs. In the second part, mode U fatigue crack growth tests have been made by using an apparatus designed based on the concept that the subsurface fatigue crack growth in rolling contact fatigue is the mode U fatigue crack growth under the stress state where the tensile mode growth is suppressed by compression stress. The rest results have shown that the mode U fatigue crack growth occurs if the superposed compression stress is enough to suppress the tensile mode growth.

This paper describes the stress analysis of a curved beam by using photoelasticity. In order to measure accurate isochromatic fringe orders at certain locations. fringes are doubled and sharpened by digital image processing. After fringe multiplication and sharpening. fringe orders can be read as a quarter order interval (N=0, 1/4, 2/4, 3/4,...). The results obtained from photoelastic experiment are compared with those calculated by using theory. Two results are agreed well even though there are some scatter bands with maximum 8 percent for the results of photoelastic measurements and theoretical calculation. Difference may be occurred due to the slight misalignment of the direction to which axial load is applied in photoelastic experiment. It is confirmed that accurate measurement of stress distribution can be possible by using the techniques of fringe multiplication and sharpening in photoelasticity.
Considering that the number of cases in which a structure foundation is located on weathered rock has been increasing recently, for adequate design bearing capacity of a foundation on weathered rock, allowable bearing capacities of such foundations in geotechnical investigation reports were studied. With reference to the study results, the allowable bearing capacity of a foundation on weathered rock was approximately 400-700 kN/m2, with a large variation, and was considered a conservative value. Because the allowable bearing capacity of the foundation ground is an important index in determining the foundation type in the early design stage, it can have a significant influence on the construction cost and period according to the initial decision. Thus, in this study, six large-scale plate-bearing tests were conducted on weathered rock, and the bearing capacity and settlement characteristics were analyzed. According to the test results, the bearing capacities from the six tests exceeded 1,500 kN/m2, and it shows that the results are similar with the one of bearing capacity formula by Pressuremeter tests when compared with the various bearing capacity formula. In addition, the elastic modulus determined by the inverse calculation of the load-settlement behavior from the large-scale plate-bearing tests was appropriate for applying the elastic modulus of the Pressuremeter tests. With consideration of the large-scale plate-bearing tests in this study and other results of plate-bearing tests on weathered rock in Korea, the allowable bearing capacity of weathered rock is evaluated to be over 1,000 kN/m2. However, because the settlement of the foundation increases as the foundation size increases, the allowable bearing capacity should be restrained by the allowable settlement criteria of an upper structure. Therefore, in this study, the anticipated foundation settlements along the foundation size and the thickness of weathered rocks have been evaluated by numerical analysis, and the foundation size and ground conditions, with an allowable bearing capacity of over 1,000 kN/m2, have been proposed as a table. These findings are considered useful in determining the foundation type in the early foundation design.

In this study, the effect of shape parameters on the J-R curves of curved CT specimens was evaluated using the limit load method. Fracture toughness tests considering the shape factors L/W and $R_m/t$ of the specimens were also performed. Thereafter, the J-R curves of the curved CT specimens were compared using the J-integral equation proposed in the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) and limit load solution. The J-R curves of the curved CT specimens were also compared with those of the CWP (curved wide plate), which is regarded to be similar to real pipe and standard specimens. Finally, the effectiveness of the J-R curve of each curved CT specimen was evaluated. The results of this study can be used for assessing the applicability of curved CT specimens in the accurate evaluation of the fracture toughness of real pipes.

One of the problems for practical use of fiber-reinforced plastics is the performance degradation by fatigue damage in the joints. The study is to develop a nondestructive technique for real-time evaluation of adhesively bonded composite-metal joints. From the prior study we confirmed that the bonding strength can be estimated from the correlation between the qualify of bonded parts and AUP's. We obtained a curve showing the correlation between the degree of fatigue damage and AUP's calculated from signals acquired during fatigue loading of single-lap and double-lap joints of CFRP and Al6061. The curve is an analogy to the one showing stiffness reduction ($E/E_o$) of polymer matrix composites by fatigue damage. From those facts, it is plausible to predict the degree of fatigue damage in real-time. Amplitude and AUP2 appeared to be optimal parameters to provide more reliable results for single-lap joints whereas Amplitude and AUP2 did for double-lap joints. It is recommended to select optimal parameters for different geometries in the application for real structures.

Cold expansion method is an effective process to retard the crack initiation at a hole and to improve fatigue life by developing the compressive residual stress around the hole. Several researches have been treated for the crack propagating toward a hole around which the residual stress by cold expansion exists. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the fatigue characteristics under the residual stress by cold expansion. Fatigue tests are performed for the plate with a central hole to which cold expansion has been applied, and the effects of the residual stress on the fatigue life are evaluated. Also the fatigue crack growth tests are conducted for the CT specimen in which the residual stress by cold expansion has been generated. The change of fatigue crack growth characteristics by the residual stress is investigated and the effects of cold expansion ratio are evaluated.
