We investigate the heat-transfer and pressure-drop characteristics of fin-and-tube heat exchangers with a copper plate or copper spiral fins. Twenty-four samples with different fin pitches and tube rows were tested. For both configurations, the effect of the fin pitch on the j factor is negligible, and the f factor increases with the fin pitch. The effect of the tube row depends on the configuration. For plate fin-and-tube heat exchangers, the j factor decreases as the row number increases; the reverse is true for spiral exchangers. We explain this by considering the flow pattern. The j factor for plate fin-and-tube heat exchangers is larger than that for spiral exchangers, and the difference decreases as the row number increases. The f factor of the plate fin-and-tube heat exchanger is also larger. We compare our results with existing predictions of correlations.

Aspect-ratio-based numerical analysis is carried out to investigate the air-side convective heat transfer characteristics in compact heat exchangers with circular tubes and flat tubes-plate fins. The RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model is adopted for turbulence analysis. The numerical analysis is carried out for aspect ratios ranging from 3.06 to 5.44 and for Reynolds numbers ranging from 1,000 to 10,000. The calculated results indicate a correlation between the friction factor and Colburn j factor in the compact heat exchanger system for the range of aspect ratios under consideration. The results obtained for circular tubes and flat tubes-plate fins in this study can be utilized to realize the optimal design of an air conditioning system.

The air and water flow distribution are experimentally studied for a round header - flat tube geometry simulating a parallel flow heat exchanger. The number of branch flat tube is thirty. The effects of tube outlet direction, tube protrusion depth as well as mass flux, and quality are investigated. The flow at the header inlet is identified as annular. For the downward flow configuration, the water flow distribution is significantly affected by the tube protrusion depth. For flush-mounted configuration, most of the water flows through frontal part of the header. As the protrusion depth increases, more water is forced to the rear part of the header. The effect of mass flux or quality is qualitatively the same as that of the protrusion depth. Increase of the mass flux or quality forces the water to rear part of the header. For the upward flow configuration, however, most of the water flows through rear part of the header. The protrusion depth, mass flux, or quality does not significantly alter the flow pattern. Possible explanations are provided based on the flow visualization results. Negligible difference on the water flow distribution was observed between the parallel and the reverse flow configuration.

In this study, condensation heat transfer tests were conducted in flat aluminum multi-channel tubes using R-410A, and the results are compared with those of R-22. Two internal geometries were tested; one with a smooth inner surface and the other with micro-fins. Data are presented for the following range of variables; vapor quality (0.1~0.9), mass flux (200~600 kg/$m^2$s) and heat flux (5~15 ㎾/$m^2$). Results show that the effect of surface tension drainage on the fin surface is more pronounced for R-22 than R-410A. The smaller Weber number for R-22 may be responsible. For the smooth tube, the heat transfer coefficient of R-410A is slightly larger than that of R-22. For the micro-fin tube, however, the reverse is true. Possible reasoning is provided considering the physical properties of the refrigerants. For the smooth tube, a correlation of Akers et at. type predicts the data reasonably well. For the micro-fin tube, the Yang and Webb model was modified to correlate the present data.
