  • Traditionally it has been understood that the aspirated and lenis stops in Seoul Korean are distinguished primarily by voice onset time (VOT) and secondarily by other cues such as the fundamental frequency (F0) of the following vowel. However, recent studies on stop production have shown that the aspirated and lenis stops are currently merging in VOT and that they are now differentiated primarily by F0. In the present study, we examined whether the currently reported change in the production domain would be also found in the perception domain. To this end, an auditory identification task was conducted using speech materials of varying VOT and F0 values with young and older male and female Seoul listeners. Results revealed that all listener groups used both VOT and F0 to distinguish the lenis vs. aspirated stops but they used the F0 cue more reliably than the VOT cue in discriminating the stop contrast. The effects of gender and age were found only in the VOT cue (i.e., not in the F0 cue), with the greatest VOT cue weight in older males and the smallest in young females, which is in line with recent production studies.

  • Based on spontaneous speech data collected in 2020, this study examined the production and perception of Korean lenis, aspirated, and fortis stops. Unlike the controlled experiments of previous studies, lenis and aspirated stops of males in their 30s were not distinguished by voice onset time (VOT) in spontaneous speech. Perceptual experiments were conducted on young females, the leaders of language change. F0 was found to serve as the primary cue for the perception of lenis stops, and then VOT distinguished the aspirated and fortis stops. The fact that the sounds were always perceived as lenis stops when F0 was low, irrespective of whether VOT was short or long, showed that F0 plays an absolute role in the perception of lenis stops. However, in some cases the aspirated and lenis stops were distinguished only by VOT, which does not happen in production. In terms of sound change, disagreement between production and perception systems occurs when sound change is in progress. In particular, when production change precedes perception change, it indicates that the sound change is in its latter stages. Young females still maintain the previous system in perception because the distinction of lenis and aspirated stops by VOT was valid in their parents' generation. In other words, VOT is still used for perception to communicate with other groups.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate how Japanese speakers perceive and produce Lenis, Aspirated and Fortis consonants in Korean. Identification tasks and production tasks were performed. The error analysis of both task showed that the participants had a significant difficulty in discriminating between Lenis and Aspirated sounds. And it was observed that there was a positive correlation between identification scores and production scores.

  • The purpose of this paper is to show their distinctive auditory cues. Until now research of acoustic characteristics has been confined to simple experiments concerning the restricted conditions. Therefore this paper examines all of the acoustic characteristics of the lax and tense Fricative Consonants and shows to how acoustic characteristics can be used to differentiate lax and tense Fricative Consonants. The results of this paper are (a) auditory cues are especially important if there is a large difference between acoustic characteristics, (b) the lax and tense Fricative Consonant's distinctive auditory cues contain a hierarchy, and (c) there is a different hierarchy between CV and VCV.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how Chinese learners of Korean produce Korean plain plosives differently in a reading passage and isolated sentences. There are several studies on Korean plosives produced by Chinese speakers, but the study comparing the production of reading passage and isolated sentences are rare. For these purposes, ten Chinese speakers' VOT values of Korean plain plosives were measured using Speech Analyzer. The results show that there is no significant difference between the plain plosive production of a reading passage and that of isolated sentences. In the further studies, the measurement of pitch with VOT is needed.

  • This study investigated whether Korean learners improve acoustic cue weights to identify Korean lenis and aspirated stops in the direction of native values through perception training that focused on contrasting the stops in various phonetic contexts. Nineteen native Chinese learners of Korean and two native Korean instructors for the perception training participated in the experiment. A training group and a non-training group were divided according to pretest results, and only the training group participated in the training for 5 days. To estimate the perceptual weights of the stop cues, a pretest and a posttest were conducted with stimuli whose stop cues (F0 and VOT) were systematically manipulated. Binary logistic regression analyses were performed on each learner's test results to calculate perceptual β coefficients, which estimate the perceptual weights of the acoustic cues used in identifying the stop contrast. The training group showed a statistically significant increase of 0.451 on average in the posttest for the coefficient values of the F0, which is the primary cue for the stop contrast, whereas the non-training group showed an insignificant increase of 0.246. The patterns of change in the F0 use after training varied considerably among individual learners.

  • Acoustic cues of some consonantal phonology were tested in Korean words. All Korean consonants were recorded and acoustically analyzed in controlled phonological environments :ⅰ) word-initial, ⅱ) inter-vocalic, and ⅲ) word-final positions. The observed acoustic regulations are : ⅰ) The lengths of obstruents are longer word-initially than word-finally, ⅱ) The lengths of sonorants are longer word-finally than in word-initial or inter-vocalic positions, ⅲ) The formants of the lateral sound /l/ are higher word-finally than intervocalically. The phonological explanations of these acoustic regulations can be found in the rules of ⅰ) inter-vocalic voicing of plain stops, ⅱ) syllable-final unreleasing of obstruents, ⅲ) word-initial aspiration of stops, and ⅳ) liquid alternation between [r] and [l]. Numerical data of all these acoustic regulations are reported in order to facilitate their application toward improving naturalness for speech synthesis and accurateness for speech recognition.

  • The purposes of this study are (1) to see if the length of residence in Korea affects to the VOT values of Korean plosives produced by Chinese speakers (2) to investigate if such VOT values are different in non-sense words and real words and (3) to find out how such VOT values are related to the native Korean speakers' understanding of the words. For these purposes, eighteen Chinese speakers' VOT values of Korean plosives were measured using Speech Analyzer and their pronunciations were evaluated by three native Korean speakers. The results show that there is no effect of both (1) length of residence in Korea and (2) production of non-sensed words and sensed words. In addition, it is noticed that VOT values of some plosives affect more to the native Korean speakers' understanding of the words, while some are not.
