Multi-focal Microscopic System Using a Fiber Bundle (광섬유 다발을 이용한 다초점 현미경)

  • We have constructed and analyzed the performance of a simple fiber bundle multi-focal microscope. The microscope had a fiber bundle substituted for micro-lens array that is the core part of MMM(multi-focal multi-photon microscope). The MMM is a type of confocal microscope. To analyze the performance and characteristics of the fiber bundle multi-focal microscope, three types of samples were used: a standard grating, USAF 1951(7, 3), and 1951(7, 6). Using two polarizers and a polarizing beam splitter, we eliminated noise and got clear images. We obtained the FWHM of fiber spot images with the standard grating using two different magnifier lenses which were 63X and 20X, and found an image of the sample as a distribution of fiber spot images. For this case we used the low magnification lens, which gives denser distribution, so that we could get clearer images. In order to test the resolution of the fiber bundle multi-focal microscopic system, we used the USAF 1951 sample which has a smaller line interval than that of the standard grating. The FWHM of the line width of the image coincides well with the real line width of the USAF 1951 sample. We confirmed the performance of a fiber bundle multi-focal microscopic system which is relatively simple but has submicron resolution and is able to get 1600 images at the same time.

  • From Complicated graph structures, duplicated operations can be executed and the operations give low efficiency. In this paper, we propose an efficient graph mining algorithm of minimizing the extension of duplicated graph patterns in which the priorities of cyclic edges are considered. In our approach, the cyclic edges with lower priorities are first extended and so duplicated extensions can be reduced. For performance test, we implement our algorithm and compare our algorithm with a state of the art, Gaston algorithm. Finally, We show that ours outperforms Gaston algorithm.

Effect of the Position of Azobenzene Moiety on the Light-Driven Anisotropic Actuating Behavior of Polyvinylalcohol Polymer Blend Films (아조벤젠 분자의 사슬 내 위치에 따른 고분자 블렌드 박막의 비등방성 광 변형에 관한 연구)

  • Structural changing materials which can induce the physical deformation of materials are interesting research topics with various potential applications. Particularly, light among many driving mechanisms is a non-contact energy source, hence the light-responsive system can be used where non-destructive, local irradiation, and remote control is needed. Here, a mainchain azobenzene polymer is synthesized and its physical and optical properties are observed and compared to that of a polymer having a light-responsive azobenzene moiety on its side chain. Further dispersion onto polyvinylalcohol hydrogel is made and its dual stability and actuation are observed upon UV-visible light irradiation. Extended azobenzene polymer blend films show an anisotropic light-actuation with non-polarized UV light at room temperature. This physical shape change is quite reversible and occurs at lower temperature than that of any other reported systems including liquid crystalline elastomers. It is successfully demonstrated that the simple physical azobenzene/polymer blending has a very good actuation compared to that of LCEs which need an elaborate chemical design and it can be further used in the areas requiring a dimensional shape change.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method for broadcasting in a WDM-PON system which has the merits of a simple and cost effective structure. It can be constructed using only an ASE (Amplified Spontaneous Emission) light source and a PI-RSOA (Polarization Independent - Reflective Semiconductor Optical Amplifier). Error-free broadcast signal transmission over 30 Km for 24 channels at 1.25 Gb/s has been successfully demonstrated.

  • To design the long-haul optical communication system, we need to decide the type of optical fiber and optical amplifier, span length of optical amplifier, dispersion compensation method, optical signal power, etc. Therefore, we need to predict the performance of optical communication system when we change one of the system parameters. In this paper, we investigate the method of predicting the maximum transmission length of the designed optical communication system and finding the optimum optical signal power to obtain the maximum transmission length.

  • 본 연구에서는 고휘도 백라이트에 있어서 일반적으로 휘도 향상을 위해서 사용하는 프리즘 혹은 편광프리즘 등의 고가의 기능성 광학시트를 사용하지 않고, 확산시트만을 사용하여 고성능의 BLU 를 제조할 수 있는 핵심부품으로서 프리즘 도광판에 대해서 연구하였다. 고휘도 프리즘 도광판을 구현하는 방법으로 먼저, 광학적으로 시뮬레이션을 통해서 가능성을 검증하고, 기본적인 광학구조의 설계를 수행한 후, 이를 stamper 방식의 사출성형으로 실물을 구현하여 설계의 재현성을 확인하는데 역정을 두었다. 실험결과, 17 inch, 두께 8 mm 사양의 모니터용 도광판에 있어서, 고휘도 BLU를 구현하기 위해서 도광판 밑면과 윗면에 프리즘 구조를 부가한 도광판의 경우에 기존의 인쇄형 도광판보다 약 20%의 휘도향상 효과를 확인할 수 있었으며, 향후 확산시트만을 사용한 고휘도 백라이트로의 응용가능성을 검증할 수 있었다.

Higher-order PMD compensator using partially feed forward algorithm (부분적인 feed forward 제어 알고리즘을 사용한 고차 PMD 보상에 대한 연구)

  • We proposed a noble algorithm using DOP (degree of polarization) not only as feedback signal but alto as feed-forward signal for the compensation of higher-order PMD effect. In the proposed algorithm, DOP after the first-order PMD compensation is considered as the indicator of the amount of residual higher-order PMD. This algorithm has the merit that DOF (degree of freedom) of the system can be limited to the level of the first-order PMD compensation system. Owing to the limited DOF, the reliability of the system can be enhanced and the complexity of the implementation can be degraded. For the analysis of the algorithm, we simulated the 10Gbps NRZ transmission system and obtained the result that the system outage probability can be reduced as much as three times with respect to the only first-order PMD compensation case.

  • The liquid crystal(LC) display is the most promising technology of the flat panel displays covering all applications from small mobile to large television applications. To understand the operating principles and improve the performances of the various LC displays, one should grasp the anisotropic nature of the LC and the propagation of light in the anisotropic media. Basic formulas governing the distribution of the LC molecules, directly related to the electro-optic effects of the LC devices, are described in view of the macroscopic interaction. Based on the matrix representation, the polarization analysis for the LC devices is also presented.

ANTICARIOGENIC EFFECT OF FLUORIDE VARNISHES AND CHLORHEXIDINE VARNISHES (불소 바니쉬와 클로르헥시딘 바니쉬의 항우식 효과)

  • Dental caries which is one of the most common chronic disease complexly developed by the action of oral bacteria, diet, and host factor. Various prevention program enhance resistance of demineralization and reduce the acidogenecity of oral bacteria have been introduced, representative material is fluoride and chlorhexidine. The purpose of the study was to evaluate and compare effectiveness of fluoride varnish and chlorhexidine varnish in vivo. Bovine tooth specimens were implanted in the lower space maintainers and applied with fluoride varnish and chlorhexidine varnish. After seven days in oral environment, metal mesh was covered to make similar condition of plaque accumulation and induce caries. All specimens were analysed by EPMA to evaluate quantitative change of Ca, P and by polarized microscope to identify histological changes. The results were as follows : After initial artificial caries induction in the mouth, there were remarkable enamel caries lesion in the control group under polarized light microscopy. The highest amount of mineral decrease were showed in control group. No statistically significant mineral decrease were showed in fluoride varnish group, while chlorhexidine varnish group showed only significant decrease of P(P<0.05). In conclusion both fluoride varnish and chlorhexidine varnish seemed to be effective for protecting enamel surface from caries activity, although fluoride varnish has more anticariogenic effect than chlorhexidine varnish.

Design of a New 3-D 16-ary Signal Constellation with Constant Envelope (상진폭 특성을 가지는 새로운 3차원 16진 신호성상도의 설계)

  • In this paper, design of a new 3-dimensional (3-D) 16-ary signal constellation with constant envelope is presented and analyzed. Unlike the conventional 16-ary constellations, all signal points of the new constellation are uniformly located on the surface of a sphere so that they have a unique amplitude level and a symmetrical structure. When average power of the constellations is normalized, the presented 16-ary constellation has around 11.4% increased minimum Euclidean distance (MED) as compared to the conventional ones that have non-constant envelope. As a result, a digital communication system which exploits the presented constellation has 1.2dB improved symbol error rate (SER). While signal points of the conventional constant-envelope constellation are not distributed uniformly on the surface of a sphere, those of the proposed constellation has a completely symmetric distribution. In addition, the new signal constellation has much lower computational complexity for practical implementation than the conventional one. Hence, the proposed 3-D 16-ary signal constellation is appropriate for the application to a communication system which strongly requires a constant-envelope characteristic.
