  • In this research a novel two-reference-beam double pulse holographic technique for the measurments of particle sizes and velocities was developed. This holographic method features the capability of separation of the first and second particle images by using two reference beams instead of one and the change of the polarization direction of laser light. The developed holographic system was tested through the measurements of droplet sizes and velocities in the spray created by two high speed impinging jets. The overall spray pattern clearly revealed the inherent wave nature. Smaller and faster droplets were generated with larger impingement angle, higher jet velocity. and smaller orifice diameter.

  • This experimental study describes the propagation characteristics and suppression of the impulse noise emitted from the exit of a perforated pipe attached to the open end of a simple shock tube. The experiment is performed through the systematic change of the shock wave Mach number and the geometrical parameters such as the porosity, hole diameter and length of the perforated pipe. The experimental results for the near and far sound field are presented and explained in comparison with those for a straight pipe. The results obtained show that for the near sound field the impulse noise strongly propagates toward to the pipe axis, but for the far sound field the impulse noise uniformly propagates toward to the all directions, indicating that the directivity pattern is almost same regardless of the pipe type. Moreover, the noise reduction performance of perforated pipe depends upon the condition of sound field. For the near sound field the perforated pipe has a little performance to suppress the impulse noise, but for the far sound field the perforated pipe has little performance to suppress the impulse noise.

  • In this study, time-dependent numerical analysis was carried out to investigate the plasma jet impingement on a flat plate, and a compressible form of two-dimensional inviscid gas dynamics equations were solved using the flux corrected transport algorithm. The mathematical modeling of Joule heating in the polycarbonate capillary bore and the mass ablation from the bore wall was incorporated in the numerical analysis and the series of computation was performed for three cases depending on the distance of the opposing plate from the capillary exit. The computational results reveal that the presence of the opposing plate does not affect the flow conditions inside the capillary when compared to the case of open-air plasma discharge. In the exterior region, the flow structure shows the typical supersonic underexpanded jet which consists of the strong Mach disk in front of the opposing plate and the barrel shock at the side of the jet. It is found that the shock evolution becomes more quasi-steady when the plate distance decreases. Also, the effects of the distance between the capillary bore exit and the opposing plate on the flow conditions along the opposing plate are investigated and the pressure variation on the plate shows more complicated interaction between the plasma discharge and the opposing plate when the location of plate becomes closer to the capillary exit.

  • A technical review of current slurry and gelled propellants is presented. In advanced countries, it is confirmed that these propellants have high specific impulse, density, excellent handling, safety characteristics and thrust controllability through research since 1950s. Substantial researches have been pursued to characterize the rheological properties, spray/combustion phenomena and propulsion system design for the gel propellant characteristics. Slurry and gelled propellants are developing actively to applicate both military and space propulsion fields such as tactical missile, air-breathing ramjet, pulse detonation engine, and combined cycle engine of future propulsion mode.

  • This experimental study describes the propagation characteristics of the impulse noise emitted from the exit of a perforated pipe attached to the open end of a simple shock tube. The pressure amplitudes and directivities of the impulse wave propagating from the exit of perforated pipe with several different configurations are measured and analyzed fur the range of the incident shock wave Mach number between 1.02 and 1.2. In the experiments, the impulse waves are visualized by a Schlieren optical system for the purpose of investigating their propagation pattern. The results obtained show that for the near sound field the impulse noise strongly propagates toward to the pipe axis, but for the far sound field the impulse noise uniformly propagates toward to the all directions, indicating that the directivity pattern is almost same regardless of the pipe type. Moreover, it is shown that for the far sound field the perforated pipe has little performance to suppress the impulse noise.
