  • We examine performance of actively managed equity funds in Korea for the period from 2002 to 2008 and investigate if fund managers have market timing abilities. We obtain the following findings: (1) average performance of funds evaluated at net return basis(net of expenses) is statistically indistinguishable from zero; (2) average performance of funds evaluated at gross return basis(before netting expenses) exceeds benchmark market returns significantly. More importantly, when funds are grouped by their size of expenses, higher performance is matched with larger expense; (3) the regression results for decomposing positive excessive returns of large-expense funds between market timing and stock selection ability are mixed. The first two findings of the paper are consistent with the Efficient Market Hypothesis a $l{\acute{a}}$ Grossman and Stiglitz(1980). Concluding remarks, however, need to be reserved since sources of excessive performance of funds with large expenses are yet to be clarified.

  • This paper examines the existence of the fund performance persistence and the smart money effect in Korean stock market and tests the flow-induced price pressure (FIPP) hypothesis, that is, fund flows affect individual stock returns and mutual fund performance. This paper also tests whether the FIPP effect can cause the performance persistence using the monthly returns and stock holdings data of 2,702 Korean mutual funds from January 2002 to June 2008. The empirical results indicate that the performance persistence exists significantly for a long time but the smart money effect does not. The hedge portfolio constructed by buying funds with the highest past 12 months performance and selling funds with the lowest past 12 months performance earns 0.11%~1.05% monthly abnormal returns, on average, in 3 years from portfolio formation month, but the hedge portfolio constructed by buying funds with the highest past net fund inflows and selling funds with the lowest past net fund inflows cannot earn positive monthly abnormal returns and the size of negative abnormal returns of the portfolio increase as time goes on. We find the evidence that the FIPP hypothesis is significantly supported. We first estimate the FIPP measure for each individual stock using the trading volume resulting from past fund flows and then construct the hedge portfolio by buying stocks with the highest FIPP measure and selling stocks with the lowest FIPP measure. That portfolio earns significantly positive abnormal return, 1.01% at only portfolio formation month and cannot earn significant abnormal returns after formation month. But, the FIPP effect cannot cause the performance persistence because, within the same FIPP measure group, funds with higher past performance still earn higher monthly abnormal returns than those with lower past performance by 0.08%~0.77%, on average, in 2 years. These results imply that the main cause of the performance persistence in Korean stock market is the difference of fund managers' ability rather than the FIPP effect.

  • This study uses Korea's equity fund-related data ranging from Jan. 2002 to Apr. 2010 to analyze the existence of cross-subsidization among funds managed by the same management company. The findings are as follows: i) a transfer of performance outcome is confirmed to move from low-fee funds to high-fee funds, meaning that management companies tend to maximize their own interest than investors' return. And such a tendency has been strengthened since 2008. ii) young funds overperform old funds, iii) funds with high returns in the previous quarter perform better than funds with low return in the same period. These results suggest that in order to protect investors, it is necessary to conduct close monitoring on transactions that might undermine the benefits of investors and comprehensive evaluation on the capability of management companies.

  • In this study, I analyzed determinant factors of mutual fund return. The samples was distributed into three types according to the ratio of included stocks in funds. The proxies of mutual funds were set up three ways(returns of fund). As a result of the analysis, I found that growth positively affect to fund return, abnormal return and adjusted abnormal return in all samples. While, according to three types of sample, expected and unexpected fund cash flows had differently effect on fund return. Inferentially, it seemed that the ratio of included stocks in fund was the cause of that. But price pressure hypothesis are not supported. In conclusion, it was not found the possibility of stock market disturbance in this analysis.

  • We investigate determinants of fund investment flows using Korean equity investment funds. Unlike previous studies which analyzed net-flows (inflow minus outflow), we analyze fund investment inflows and outflows separately that should properly reflect investors' fund selection and redemption decision. We find similar effects of past return, fund age on net-flows to existing studies based on US market data. The analysis of determinants of inflows shows that inflows are related to past return, fund age and sales fee as net-flows. In contrast, outflows are found to behave quite differently from inflows. Apparently, asymmetry exists between fund investment inflows and outflows at the Korean fund selection market. Specifically, high past returns increase fund investment inflows while increase, rather than decrease, fund outflows. Moreover, 'convexity' is detected both in inflows and outflows: higher past returns accelerate outflows as well as inflows. Effects of sales fee also differ between inflows and outflows. In the 'affiliated' fund sample, sales fee is negatively related to inflows while positively related to outflows. In the 'unaffiliated' fund sample, sales fee is positively related to inflows, but no significant relationship exists with outflows. Empirical findings of this paper imply that the rational investor's fund selection view cannot provide a consistent explanation of the Korean fund selection market. In particular, the positive and convex relationship between past returns and fund outflows is inconsistent with the rational investor view. The fact that investor's fund investment appears to display 'disposition effect', which has been reported by studies of individual investors' stock investment behaviour suggests that the behavioral finance view should be a part of explanation for the Korean fund selection market. In addition, the strikingly different patterns between the 'affiliated' funds and the 'unaffiliated' funds, imply that brokers' incentive structure is another prevailing factor for fund investment flows.

  • This paper investigates performance of the Markowitz's portfolio selection model with applications to Korean stock market. We choose Samsung-Group-Funds and KOSPI index for performance comparison with the Markowitz's portfolio selection model. For the most recent one and a half year period between March 2007 and September 2008, KOSPI index almost remains the same with only 0.1% change, Samsung-Group-Funds shows 20.54% return, and Markowitz's model, which is composed of the same 17 Samsung group stocks, reaches 52% return. We perform sensitivity analysis on the duration of financial data and the period of portfolio change in order to maximize the return of portfolio. In conclusion, according to our empirical research results with Samsung-Group-Funds, investment by Markowitz's model, which periodically changes portfolio by using nonlinear programming with only financial data, outperforms investment by the fund manager who possesses rich experiences on stock trading and actively changes portfolio based on minute-by-minute market news and business information.

  • This study analyzes the relationships between soft dollar(brokerage commission) and characteristics of funds, and between brokerage commission and return on funds, using the data on equity funds of Korea from June 2008 to November 2011. The result confirms a statistically significant negative relationship between management & sales fees and brokerage commission, meaning that rather than raising management & sales fees, which could be easily recognized by investors, it is through brokerage commission, a hidden cost, which asset management firms indirectly compensate for their services. Meanwhile, the analysis on the relationship between brokerage commission and return on funds reveals that higher brokerage commissions lead to lower return on funds, meaning at least in short-term no contribution to increasing returns in the future. These results suggest the need for streamlining the system to alleviate conflicts of interest between investors and management firms in addition to effectively controlling for principal-agent problems.

  • Based on the importance of asset allocation in the return of an investment portfolio, this article attempts to verify the appropriateness of mutual funds as means of investment to obtain optimal asset allocation. The return-based style analysis is applied to determine a mutual fund's allocation(or a style) among a set of specified asset classes. Assuming a particular investor who defines a range allowed a fund's style to differ from its original one, it is examined whether or not the fund style is continued over an investment time horizon. After verifying the fact that the original style of the investment fails to remain unchanged from the empirical analysis limited to domestic equity mutual funds, we further investigated the reasons for the style drift. Despite several limitations of the analysis, it yields the conclusion that domestic equity mutual funds do not seem to be an appropriate investment tool to achieve a target asset allocation.
